We used anthropometric and dietary data from 3 d weighed records of 244 subjects between 9 and 18 years of age participating in the Dortmund Nutritional and Anthropometric Longitudinally Designed (DONALD) study. Only subjects with at least four out of six possible weighed dietary records were considered. A repeated-measures regression model (PROC MIXED) was used to analyse the effect of beverage consumption on body-weight status. BMI standard deviation scores (BMI-SDS) and body fat percentage (%BF) were chosen as the dependent variables. In boys, energetic beverage consumption was not associated with BMI-SDS or %BF, neither cross-sectionally nor prospectively. In girls, baseline consumption of energetic beverages did not predict baseline BMI-SDS, baseline %BF, or change in either variable over the study period. However, an increase in energetic beverage consumption over the study period was associated with an increase in BMI-SDS (+0.070 SDS/MJ increase in energetic beverage consumption; P = 0·01). Separate consideration of regular soft drinks and fruit juices revealed that, in girls, BMI-SDS increased with increased fruit juice consumption (+0·096 SDS/MJ increase in fruit juice consumption; P = 0·01), and to a lesser extent with regular soft drink consumption (+0·055 SDS/MJ increase in regular soft drink consumption; P = 0·08). Predicting a system of many components with a huge amount of interactions is beyond human skills. The currently common use of simulations for design support is not satisfying, as it is time-consuming and the results are most likely sub- optimal. In this work, we present the derivation of an analytical, time-, and space-continuous model for a swarm of autonomous robots based on the Fokker-Planck equation. While the motion model is in most parts physically motivated, the communication model is based on a heuristic approach. A showcase application to a recently proposed scenario of collective perception in a huge swarm of robots with very limited abilities is given and the simulation results are compared to the model. Despite the high level of abstraction, the prediction discrepancies are small and the parameters can be mapped one-to-one from the model to the control algorithm. The density can be determined in an efficient scheme by solving one-particle non-interacting Schrödinger equations—the Kohn–Sham equations. The complication of the problem is hidden in the—unknown—time-dependent exchange and correlation potential that appears in the Kohn–Sham equations and for which it is essential to find good approximations. Many approximations have been suggested and tested for finite systems, where even the very simple adiabatic local-density approximation (ALDA) has often proved to be successful. In the case of solids, ALDA fails to reproduce optical absorption spectra, which are instead well described by solving the Bethe–Salpeter equation of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). On the other hand, ALDA can lead to excellent results for loss functions (at vanishing and finite momentum transfer). In view of this and thanks to recent successful developments of improved linear-response kernels derived from MBPT, TDDFT is today considered a promising alternative to MBPT for the calculation of electronic spectra, even for solids. Our goal is to distinguish between graphs having a predetermined graph property and graphs that are far from every graph having that property. It is believed that almost all, even very simple graph properties require a large complexity to be tested for arbitrary (bounded degree) graphs. Therefore in this paper we focus our attention on testing graph properties for special classes of graphs. We call a graph family non-expanding if every graph in this family is not a weak expander (its expansion is O(1/log2 n), where n is the graph size). A graph family is hereditary if it is closed under vertex removal. Similarly, a graph property is hereditary if it is closed under vertex removal. Next, we call a graph property Π to be testable for a graph family F if for every graph G ε F, in time independent of the size of G we can distinguish between the case when G satisfies property Π and when it is far from every graph satisfying property Π. In this paper we prove thatIn the bounded degree graph model, any hereditary property is testable if the input graph belongs to a hereditary and non-expanding family of graphs. As an application, our result implies that, for example, any hereditary property (e.g., k-colorability, H-freeness, etc.) is testable in the bounded degree graph model for planar graphs, graphs with bounded genus, interval graphs, etc. No such results have been known before and prior to our work, in the bounded degree graph model very few graph properties have been known to be testable for any graph classes.}}, author = {{Sohler, Christian and Czumaj, Artur}}, booktitle = {{Proceedings of the 17th ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA'07)}}, isbn = {{9780898716245}}, pages = {{494--501}}, title = {{{On Testable Properties in Bounded Degree Graphs}}}, year = {{2007}}, } @inproceedings{18656, abstract = {{In the StrSort model [2], the input is given as a stream, e.g. a sequence of points, and an algorithm can perform (a) streaming and (b) sorting passes to process the stream. Moreover, self- organizing systems show an overall behavior that cannot easily be predicted or even preprogrammed in a scalable way. It was in the early 1960ies that people like Ashby and Eigen investigated self-organization properties in (natural) systems. Since these days, a great number of (technical) solutions have been developed, which, either on purpose or unintentionally, inherently the basic concepts of self-organization. The aim of this book is to investigate the concepts of self-organization in the context of autonomous sensor and actor networks. The primary objective is to categorize the basic self-organization methods and to survey techniques for communication and coordination in massively distributed systems according to the developed classification scheme. Basically, two possible approaches can be thought of for organizing this book. First, we could start analyzing sensor and actor network technology and figure out what basic mechanisms are employed and how these relate to self-organization. A second approach would be to introduce self-organization as a methodology, apparently used everywhere in our life (in nature and in technical systems), and afterwards to continue with technical issues in sensor and actor networks searching for previously learned self-organization methods. I decided to follow the second approach in order to keep the focus on self-organization while studying the term in the world of sensor and actor networks. The term self-organization is still often misunderstood and misinterpreted. Therefore, this textbook is intended to be a basis for a better understanding of the concepts of self-organization, especially in the domain of sensor and actor networks. It provides a stepwise introduction of definitions, methodologies, and corresponding techniques relevant in the context of self-organization. Recent advances in miniaturization and wireless communication enabled the development of low-cost sensor nodes. Additionally, new application domains of sensor and actor networks emerged that demand for huge numbers of interacting devices. Thus, the relevance of self-organization methods is rapidly increasing as it is considered the primary control paradigm for distributed and massively distributed systems. The reader will see that self-organization has a number of advantages compared to other control paradigms. So, it becomes possible to operate huge numbers of collaborating subsystems even in case of limited resources, unreliable communication, and in case of massive failures of single systems. Unfortunately, these advantages are accompanied by some rather annoying side effects such as the increasing complexity and a nondeterministic behavior. By using optimal combinations of the basic methods of self-organization, these disadvantages can be minimized to some extent. According to the objective of this textbook - to study sensor and actor networks - the most relevant domains of communication and coordination are deeply investigated based on well-known algorithms and mechanisms and a number of case studies. This includes networking aspects of medium access control, ad hoc routing, data-centric communication, and clustering techniques. Additionally, control mechanisms for cooperation, task and resource allocation, and collaborative actuation are investigated. The book is concluded by a brief introduction of the domain of bio-inspired algorithms. This study is included for two reasons. First, to demystify the term bio-inspired networking, and secondly, to show the capabilities of such bio-inspired approaches. }}, author = {{Dressler, Falko}}, isbn = {{978-0-470-02820-9}}, publisher = {{John Wiley & Sons}}, title = {{{Self-Organization in Sensor and Actor Networks}}}, doi = {{10.1002/9780470724460}}, year = {{2007}}, } @inproceedings{4494, author = {{Sporer, Thomas and Jenert, Tobias and Strehl, Bernhard and Noack, Patrick Ole}}, booktitle = {{DeLFI Workshops}}, keywords = {{E-Portfolios, Lerngemeinschaften, Praxisgemeinschaften, Projektgruppen, Hochschulstudium, informelles Lernen}}, location = {{Siegen}}, pages = {{19----26}}, publisher = {{Logos Verlag}}, title = {{{Einsatz von E-Portfolios zur Förderung von studentischen Lerngemeinschaften im Hochschulstudium.}}}, year = {{2007}}, } @inproceedings{4495, author = {{Sporer, Thomas and Jenert, Tobias and Reinmann, Gabi}}, booktitle = {{4. As the demand for rapid deployment of dependable mobile applications increases, middleware for mobile systems is emerging as one of the most active areas of system research in mobility. The middleware is a set of distributed software services that exists between distributed operating systems and mobile applications. The key to the middleware is to provide support across the mobile application domains, help application developers overcome the complexity and problems brought by mobility, and enhance dependability and usability of developed mobile applications. The criticality and pervasiveness of middleware for mobile systems is continually growing. However, the design and development of the middleware are difficult tasks, and it is not easy to ensure the quality of a developed middleware. This is mainly caused by the increasing complexity of the middleware. In addition, the great diversity of this area makes it very difficult for the designers to reuse the already established design knowledge or successful experience when building new systems. All these make the design process quite inefficient and unpredictable, and therefore risking the project. “One man’s magic is another man’s engineering”. Engineering design is much more routine than innovative. Founding on this fundamental notion in software engineering, we develop an architectural style-based approach to deal with the problems in the thesis. We build architectural styles for a class of related middleware. The style represents a common form of design, which originates from the results that practitioners have achieved in one area. The style is formulated to repeat successes and avoid failures from previous projects. When building a new middleware, the designers and developers do not need to explore all possible alternatives for its supported architecture. Instead, they can use the architectural style that is effective for the middleware. They can define the design as instances of the style, or they can use the style as a reference model for further improvement and development. By structuring the design space for a family of related middleware, the style can drastically simplify the process of building a middleware, reduce costs of implementation through reusable infrastructure, and improve system integrity through style-specific analysis and checks. We develop the approach based on UML-like meta modeling and graph transformation techniques to support sound methodological principles, powerful modeling, formal analysis and refinement. The approach consists of several main parts: the modeling language that supports specification of the style and mobility, the refinement formalization that ensures that an abstract style is correctly refined to a concrete one, as well as the consistency check framework that validates behavioral consistency between two styles on different abstract layers. With the Fujaba simulation tool support, we also develop a style-based engineering process that helps us to efficiently develop correct and consistent styles. Besides, it allows a seamless integration of our approach into the well-known object oriented design. By providing a concrete example of how to construct the style for a class of related middleware, and how to use the style to help the design and development of a new middleware, we show that the architectural style-based approach is useful and practical.}}, author = {{Guo, Ping}}, title = {{{Architectural Style-based Modeling and Simulation of Middleware for Mobile Systems}}}, year = {{2007}}, } @article{7597, author = {{Tönnies, Merle}}, journal = {{Spatial Practices 2}}, pages = {{305--324}}, publisher = {{Rodopi}}, title = {{{Constructing an Emblematic Northern Space. In contrast to numerous research efforts that try to generate executable function code from models, we propose a novel approach termed model-driven monitoring. On the model level the behavior of an operation is specified with a pair of UML composite structure diagrams (visual contract), a visual notation for pre- and post-conditions. The specified behavior is implemented by a programmer manually. An automatic translation from our visual contracts to JML assertions allows for monitoring the hand-coded programs during their execution. In this paper we present an approach to extend our model-driven monitoring approach to allow for model-driven unit testing. In this approach we utilize the generated JML assertions as test oracles.
