Developmental behavioral studies have suggested that parental modifications in their actions directed to infants versus to adults may aid the infants’ processing of the actions. We have been analyzing parental actions using a bottom-up attention model so as to take the advantage in robot action learning. Our latest result indicates that parental social signals can be used for a robot to detect significant state changes in the demonstrated action.},

abstract = {We present random sampling algorithms that with probability at least 1 − δ compute a (1 ±ε)-approximation of the clustering coefficient and of the number of bipartite clique subgraphs of a graph given as an incidence stream of edges. The space used by our algorithm to estimate the clustering coefficient is inversely related to the clustering coefficient of the network itself. The space used by our algorithm to compute the number K 3,3 of bipartite cliques is proportional to the ratio between the number of K 1,3 and K 3,3 in the graph.
Since the space complexity depends only on the structure of the input graph and not on the number of nodes, our algorithms scale very well with increasing graph size. Therefore they provide a basic tool to analyze the structure of dense clusters in large graphs and have many applications in the discovery of web communities, the analysis of the structure of large social networks and the probing of frequent patterns in large graphs.
We implemented both algorithms and evaluated their performance on networks from different application domains and of different size; The largest instance is a webgraph consisting of more than 135 million nodes and 1 billion edges. Both algorithms compute accurate results in reasonable time on the tested instances.},

abstract = {For the calculation of neutral excitations, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is an exact reformulation of the many-body time-dependent Schrödinger equation, based on knowledge of the density instead of the many-body wavefunction. The density can be determined in an efficient scheme by solving one-particle non-interacting Schrödinger equations—the Kohn–Sham equations. The complication of the problem is hidden in the—unknown—time-dependent exchange and correlation potential that appears in the Kohn–Sham equations and for which it is essential to find good approximations. Many approximations have been suggested and tested for finite systems, where even the very simple adiabatic local-density approximation (ALDA) has often proved to be successful. In the case of solids, ALDA fails to reproduce optical absorption spectra, which are instead well described by solving the Bethe–Salpeter equation of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). On the other hand, ALDA can lead to excellent results for loss functions (at vanishing and finite momentum transfer). In view of this and thanks to recent successful developments of improved linear-response kernels derived from MBPT, TDDFT is today considered a promising alternative to MBPT for the calculation of electronic spectra, even for solids. After reviewing the fundamentals of TDDFT within linear response, we discuss different approaches and a variety of applications to extended systems.},

The effects of volume relaxation and internal degrees of freedom are fully taken into account. For hydrostatic compression, planar strain in the (001) plane and uniaxial strain along the [001] direction, we derive quantitative limits beyond which magnetite becomes metallic. As a major new result, we identify the bond length between the octahedrally coordinated iron atoms and their neighbouring oxygen atoms as the main characteristic parameter, and we show that the transition occurs if external strain reduces this interatomic distance from 2.06 Å in equilibrium to below a critical value of 1.99 Å. Based on this criterion, we also argue that planar strain due to epitaxial growth does not lead to a metallic state for magnetite films grown on (111)-oriented substrates.},

We consider a single mobile robot with continuous high bandwidth wireless communication, e.g. caused by a multimedia application like video surveillance. This robot is connected to a radio base station and moves with constant speed from a given starting point on the plane to a target point. The task is to find the best path such that the energy consumption for mobility and the communication is optimized. This is motivated by the fact that the energy
consumption of radio devices increases polynomially (at least to
the power of two) with the transmission distance. We introduce efficient approximation algorithms finding the optimal path given the starting point, the target point and the position of the radio stations. We exemplify the influence of the communication cost by a starting scenario with one radio station. We study the performance of the proposed algorithm in simulation, compare it with the scenario without applying our approach, and present the results.},

abstract = {We define a natural generalization of the prominent k-server problem, the k-resource problem. It occurs in metric spaces with some demands and resources given at its points. The demands may vary with time, but the total demand may never exceed k. The goal of an online algorithm is to satisfy demands by moving resources, while minimizing the cost for transporting resources. We give an asymptotically optimal O(log(min {n,k}))-competitive randomized algorithm and an O(min {k,n})-competitive deterministic one for the k-resource problem on uniform metric spaces consisting of n points. This extends known results for paging to the more general setting of k-resource.
Basing on the results for uniform metric spaces, we develop a randomized algorithm solving the k-resource and the k-server problem on metric spaces which can be decomposed into components far away from each other. The algorithm achieves a competitive ratio of O(log(min {n,k})), provided that it has some extra resources more than the optimal algorithm.

abstract = {Continuous and reliable concentration measurement of liquids still is a great challenge as the sensor systems have to meet high industrial requirements. Apart from chemical sensors there are a couple of acoustic systems [1] that are well suited for a lot of industrial applications. Most of them determine the amplitude ratio of deflected ultrasound bursts at different boundaries as well as the sound velocity of the liquid in order to calculate its acoustic impedance and therewith its density. The advantages of acoustic sensors are their robustness and their fast response. Their disadvantages are sensitivity against variations of the reference material properties as well as abrasion or soiling of the boundaries. This contribution is about a new model-based method that uses the whole surface of an acoustic waveguide as reference boundary: It has turned out that the principal components of a signal at the end of the waveguide can be assigned to the different propagative acoustic modes (Fig. 1). Therefore it is necessary to use different simulation tools, e.g. FEM and modal analysis (Fig. 2). With this it is possible to determine the amplitudes of each mode by means of one measured signal at the end of the waveguide and Gauss Algorithm even if the transducer is of very simple kind [2]. Therewith it is possible to get redundant information -- one amplitude for each mode -- for the liquid impedance. In addition to that it is possible to generate an acoustic reference signal without information about the liquid impedance but dissipation if we use the fundamental mode. The different signal amplitudes and a model of acoustic wave propagation [2, 3] offer the possibility to distinguish between dissipation in the liquid and attenuation due to the impedance relations. Moreover, if there are enough analysable amplitudes available, variations of the reference material properties can be determined.},
