The technique is based on producing an anisotropic polymer network in the bulk by photo-polymerizing a mixture of photoresist material and liquid crystal by linearly polarized UV-light. Both uniform planar alignment and homeotropic alignment can be obtained depending on the curing conditions. In the case of planar alignment, the orientation of liquid crystal molecules is governed by the direction of the polarization vector of the UV-light, thus making it possible to produce a defined azimuthal orientation of the liquid crystal director. This technique obviates the need to give any previous treatment to the bounding substrates. AU - Jain, Sukhmal C. From the results of photocurrent and transient four-wave mixing experiments, we conclude that the critical field is higher for superlattices with wide minibands than for superlattices, with narrow minibands. The explanation for this dependence is that intraminiband scattering due to LO-phonon emission is excluded in minibands narrower than the LO-phonon energy. AU - Meier, Torsten AU - von Plessen, G. The wavepackets are generated by simultaneous excitation of several exciton transitions with laser pulses of about 100 fs duration. The time-integrated FWM signals exhibit a pronounced modulation superimposed on the overall decay which can be attributed to the quantum interference of the different eigenstates. In the time-resolved FWM signals this interference is not present, reflecting the interplay between many-body Coulomb effects and inhomogeneous broadening. This experimental technique is then employed to extract the exciton binding energies in pseudomorphic symmetrically strained (GaIn)As/GaIPAs) with various In contents. In addition, negative differential resistance (NDR) can be realized by using tunneling diodes containing double-barrier heterostructures or a superlattice structure.5,6 Actually, the proposal of Esaki and Tsu5 to use electronic Bloch oscillations in the miniband of a semiconductor superlattice to realize NDR marked the starting point for the physics and applications of semiconductor heterostructures. Polarization-dependent spectrally resolved four-wave mixing shows an additional peak that is separated from the 1s heavy-hole exciton line by the biexciton binding energy. The theoretical model for the microscopic coupling mechanism is still the subject of controversy, however. In ref. [1], we have presented a model including a density dependent coupling between opposite spin excitons which assumes that the interaction results in a renormalization of the matrix elements, dephasing rates and energies of the transition from the single-exciton state to the two-exciton state with respect to the corresponding quantities for the single exciton transitions. In contrast, Wang et al. claim that all experimental observations are explained by a density induced dephasing rate and that biexciton states play no role [2]. Here we present a new 3-pulse degenerate-four-wave-mixing (DFWM) configuration which is able to differentiate between pure local field effects and biexcitonic contributions to the time-integrated signal. Experiments were performed on an almost homogeneously broadened GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As single QW (well width 20 nm, photoluminescence line 0.3 meV, homogenous linewidth 0.15 meV) in the backward reflection geometry. The sample was cooled to 10 K and excited by a sequence of three pulses (1.1 ps duration) with equal intensity, wave vectors 𝑘→1,𝑘→2,𝑘→3 and delays τ12 and τ13 between the second and first and the third and first pulse, respectively. The signal was monitored in the direction 𝑘→𝑠=𝑘→1+𝑘→2−𝑘→3 which provides no signal for the chosen pulse length if local field and renormalization effects are negligible. The peak intensity of the time-integrated DFWM signal has been calculated by solving the optical Bloch for a system of two non-interacting two-level systems (2LS) with opposite circular polarization selection rules (local field effect) and for the renormalized four-level system (4LS) depicted in Fig. 1 which assumes the formation of biexcitons between excitons with opposite spins. The signal strength is proportional to the strength of the local field in the case of the 2LS and to the renormalization for the 4LS. The peak signal intensities expected for pure local field and pure biexction contributions are summarized in the second and third column of Table 1 for eight experimental configurations applying different linear and circularly polarized pulses. The values are normalized to the signal strength predicted for three parallel linearly polarized pulses. Close inspection of the data reveals remarkable differences of the peak amplitude with polarization geometry for the two coupling models. AU - Meier, Torsten AU - Kuhl, J. AU - Mayer, E.J. Previous application of a renormalized 9-level system has proven successful in describing the third-order response of hh-excitons in GaAs quantum wells.2 We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the polarization selection rules for degenerate- four-wave-mixing (DFWM) and quantum beating of hh and lh transitions in a GaAs QW. Depending on the polarization and temporal sequence of the three pulses simultaneous excitation of the hh and lh transitions generates either quantum beats (QB), no modulation of the signal, or a superposition of QB and polarization interference (PI) effects as proved by spectrally resolved (SR)-DFWM. Evidence for the formation of biexcitons has been independently derived from pump-probe studies [1], from the density dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) line shape [2] and from signal modulations observed in degenerate-four-wave-mixing (DFWM) with incoherent light pulses [3]. Here, we report on time-resolved DFWM with parallel (PP) and cross-polarized (CP) pulses. Depending on the polarization geometry, the signals reveal strong quantum beats which correspond to the splitting between either the heavy hole (hh) and light hole (lh) exciton or the hh exciton and the biexciton. We show that these measurements allow a precise determination of exciton binding energies. One of the advantages of this quantum beat method as compared to linear optical methods is that a determination of the exciton binding energy is possible even in the presence of considerable inhomogeneous broadening. In addition, the dependence of the exciton binding energy on the strain in the (GaIn)As quantum well layers suggests that the reduced electron-hole effective mass is not influenced by the increase in strain. This oscillatory motion is known as Bloch oscillations (BOs) and has recently been detected in transient four-wave mixing (FWM) and Tera-Hertz emission experiments on semiconductor superlattices. It is generally assumed that the minimum field required for the observation of BOs is controlled by the rate of scattering in the material. However, an experimental verification of this point is still lacking. AU - Meier, Torsten AU - von Plessen, G. AU - Feldmann, J. AU - Göbel, E.O. AU - Thomas, P. AU - Goossen, K.W. AU - Kuo, J.M. In principle, exciton/exciton interaction results in a renormalization of the transition matrix elements, dephasing rates and frequencies of the excitonic states. Wang et al.1 claimed that all experimental results can be explained by a density- induced enhanced dephasing rate. In a previous paper,2 we have suggested a density dependent coupling between opposite spin excitons, which involves all three renormalization phenomena. AU - Meier, Torsten AU - Smith, G.O. In this paper, we report results of transient and time-resolved FWM-experiments in which such ’excitonic wave packets’ play a crucial role. In addition, a theoretical treatment of the problem based on the solution of the semiconductor Bloch is presented. Faster algorithms as the one for the general problem are obtained for special cases, namely thatI is restricted to translations or even to translations only in one specified direction. It turns out that determining pseudo-optimal solutions, i.e. ones that differ from the optimum by just a constant factor, can be done much more efficiently than determining optimal solutions. In the most general case, the algorithm for the pseudo-optimal solution is based on the surprising fact that for the optimal possible match betweenP and an imageI(Q) ofQ, the distance between the centroids of the edges of the convex hulls ofP andI(Q) is a constant multiple of the Hausdorff distance betweenP andI(Q). It is also shown that the Hausdorff distance between two polygons can be determined in timeO(n logn), wheren is the total number of vertices. Composition of graph grammars w.r.t. common subgrammars is shown to be compatible with the semantics, i.e. the semantics of the composed grammar is obtained as the composition of the semantics of the component grammars. Moreover, the structure of a composed grammar is preserved during a refinement step in the sense that compatible refinements of the components induce a refinement of the composition. The concepts and results are illustrated by an example. The main idea to overcome these problems is to develop graphical support for formal methods in order to increase acceptance by practitioners and to provide means for integration of formal and semi--formal methods. More specifically suitable concepts will be developed to combine algebraic specifications, Petri Nets, and Graph Grammars with each other and with distinguished graphical components to be used by industrial partners. More precisely, they have deficiencies with respect to modeling hierarchical data structures or specifying meta activities like manipulation of graph schemata. Furthermore, already proposed graph grammar module concepts are still too abstract to be useful in practice. Our contribution addresses these problems by introducing a new hierarchical graph data model with an infinite number of schema, meta-schema, etc. layers. It forms the base for a forthcoming concrete modular graph grammar specification language where in addition information hiding aspects like explicit export and import interfaces are expressible. When a parameter is varied this fully symmetric dynamical state can lose its stability, and the main purpose of this paper is to investigate which type of dynamical behavior is expected to be observed once the loss of stability has occurred. The essential tool is a classification of Lyapunov exponents based on the symmetry of the underlying problem. This classification is crucial in the derivation of the analytical results but it also allows an efficient computation of the dominant Lyapunov exponent associated with each symmetry type. We show how these dominant exponents determine the stability of invariant sets possessing various instantaneous symmetries, and this leads to the idea of symmetry breaking bifurcations of chaotic attractors. Finally, the results and ideas are illustrated for several systems of coupled oscillators. AU - Aston, Philip J. It is often believed that these spiral wave patterns can occur only in systems of reaction–diffusion equations. We show, both theoretically (using Hopf bifurcation techniques) and numerically (using both direct simulation and continuation of rotating waves) that spiral wave patterns can appear in a single reaction–diffusion equation [ in u(x, t)] on a disk, if one assumes "spiral" boundary conditions (ur = muθ). Spiral boundary conditions are motivated by assuming that a solution is infinitesimally an Archimedian spiral near the boundary. It follows from a bifurcation analysis that for this form of spirals there are no singularities in the spiral pattern (technically there is no spiral tip) and that at bifurcation there is a steep gradient between the "red" and "blue" arms of the spiral. These clustering techniques can be used in two ways. First acoustically similar states are tied together. It will help to reduce the number of parameters but also allow to train otherwise rarely seen states together with more robust ones (state-tying). Secondly densities are clustered across states, this reduces the number of densities while at the same time keeping the best performances of our recognizer (density-clustering). We have applied these techniques both to word-based small-vocabulary and phoneme-based large-vocabulary recognition tasks. On the WSJ task, we could achieve a reduction of the word error rate by 7%. On the TI/NIST-connected digit task, the number of parameters was reduced by a factor 2-3 while keeping the same string error rate. But, as first applications that failed on the market show, it is by no means obvious how to incorporate voice control in a user interface. This paper addresses the issue of how to design a voice control so that the user perceives it as a benefit. User interface guidelines that are adapted or specific to voice control are presented. Then the process of designing a voice control in the user-centred approach is described. By means of two examples, the car stereo and telephone answering machine, it is shown how this is turned into practice. When it comes to real-world applications, robustness and real-time response might be more important issues. For the first requirement we review some of the work on robustness and discuss one specific technique, spectral normalization, in more detail. The requirement of real-time response has to be considered in the light of the limited hardware resources in voice control applications, which are due to the tight cost constraints. In this paper we discuss in detail one specific means to reduce the processing and memory demands: a clustering technique applied at various levels within the acoustic modelling. AU - Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold AU - Beyerlein, Peter AU - Geller, Dieter ID - 11786 JF - Philips Journal of Research TI - Speech recognition algorithms for voice control interfaces ER - TY - CONF AB - We address the problem of automatically finding an acoustic representation (i.e. a transcription) of unknown words as a sequence of subword units, given a few sample utterances of the unknown words, and an inventory of speaker-independent subword units. The problem arises if a user wants to add his own vocabulary to a speaker-independent recognition system simply by speaking the words a few times. Two methods are investigated which are both based on a maximum-likelihood formulation of the problem. The experimental results show that both automatic transcription methods provide a good estimate of the acoustic models of unknown words. The recognition error rates obtained with such models in a speaker-independent recognition task are clearly better than those resulting from separate whole-word models. They are comparable with the performance of transcriptions drawn from a dictionary. AU - Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold AU - Beyerlein, P. AU - Thelen, E. The system has been successfully applied to various tasks in American English and German, ranging from small vocabulary tasks to very large vocabulary tasks and from recognition only to speech understanding. Here, we concentrate on phoneme-based continuous-speech recognition for large vocabulary recognition as used for dictation, which covers a significant part of our research work on speech recognition. We describe this task and report on experimental results. In order to allow a comparison with the performance of other systems, a section with an evaluation on the standard North American Business news (NAB2) task (dictation of American English newspaper text) is supplied. The system has been successfully applied to various tasks in the German and (American) English languages, ranging from small vocabulary tasks to very large vocabulary tasks. Here, we concentrate on continuousspeech recognition for dictation in real applications, the dictation of legal reports and radiology reports in German. We describe this task and report on experimental results. We also describe a commercial PC-based dictation system which includes a PC implementation of our scientific recognition prototype. In order to allow for a comparison with the performance of other systems, a section with an evaluation on the standard Wall Street Journal task (dictation of American English newspaper text) is supplied. The recognition architecture is based on an integrated statistical approach. We describe the characteristic features of the system as opposed to other systems: 1. the Viterbi criterion is consistently applied both in training and testing; 2. continuous mixture densities are used without tying or smoothing; 3. time-synchronous beam search in connection with a phoneme look-ahead is applied to a tree-organized lexicon.
