AB - In real-world problems, uncertainties (e.g., errors in the measurement,
precision errors) often lead to poor performance of numerical algorithms when
not explicitly taken into account. This is also the case for control problems,
where optimal solutions can degrade in quality or even become infeasible. Thus,
there is the need to design methods that can handle uncertainty. In this work,
we consider nonlinear multi-objective optimal control problems with uncertainty
on the initial conditions, and in particular their incorporation into a
feedback loop via model predictive control (MPC). In multi-objective optimal
control, an optimal compromise between multiple conflicting criteria has to be
found. For such problems, not much has been reported in terms of uncertainties.
To address this problem class, we design an offline/online framework to compute
an approximation of efficient control strategies. This approach is closely
related to explicit MPC for nonlinear systems, where the potentially expensive
optimization problem is solved in an offline phase in order to enable fast
solutions in the online phase. In order to reduce the numerical cost of the
offline phase, we exploit symmetries in the control problems. Furthermore, in
order to ensure optimality of the solutions, we include an additional online
optimization step, which is considerably cheaper than the original
multi-objective optimization problem. We test our framework on a car
maneuvering problem where safety and speed are the objectives. The
multi-objective framework allows for online adaptations of the desired
objective. Alternatively, an automatic scalarizing procedure yields very
efficient feedback controls. Our results show that the method is capable of
designing driving strategies that deal better with uncertainties in the initial
conditions, which translates into potentially safer and faster driving
strategies.

AB - Many countries have opened their health care markets to private for-profit providers, aiming to promote quality and choice for patients. The prices are regulated and providers compete in location and quality. We show that whereas opening a public hospital market typically raises quality, the private provider strategically locates towards the corner of the market to avoid costly quality competition. Social welfare depends on the size of the regulator's budget and on the altruism of the public provider. If the budget is large, high quality results and welfare is highest in a duopoly whenever entry is optimal. If the budget is small, quality levels in a duopoly mirror the quality level in a monopoly. It can be optimal for the regulator not to use the full budget.

AB - Modern user interfaces (UIs) are increasingly expected to be plastic, in the sense that they retain a constant level of usability, even when subjected to context changes at runtime. Self-adaptive user interfaces (SAUIs) have been promoted as a solution for context variability due to their ability to automatically adapt to the context-of-use at runtime. The development of SAUIs is a challenging and complex task as additional aspects like context management and UI adaptation have to be covered. In classical model-driven UI development approaches, these aspects are not fully integrated and hence introduce additional complexity as they represent crosscutting concerns. In this paper, we present an integrated model-driven development approach where a classical model-driven development of UIs is coupled with a model-driven development of context-of-use and UI adaptation rules. We base our approach on the core UI modeling language IFML and introduce new modeling languages for context-of-use (ContextML) and UI adaptation rules (AdaptML). The generated UI code, based on the IFML model, is coupled with the context and adaptation services, generated from the ContextML and AdaptMLmodel, respectively. The integration of the generated artifacts, namely UI code, context, and adaptation services in an overall rule-based execution environment, enables runtime UI adaptation. The benefit of our approach is demonstrated by two case studies, showing the development of SAUIs for different application scenarios and a usability study which has been conducted to analyze end-user satisfaction of SAUIs.

AB - How can intuition research inform practice? As the use of intuition in business has become more widely accepted, companies struggle to understand how to use this additional resource efficiently, while corporate trainers and university educators lack tools to develop it as a skill. This truly international Handbook provides relevant answers with:
• chapters by academics and practitioners, written in a concise, digestible format to make it accessible to non-academic readers
• empirical studies from multiple industry/service sectors that demonstrate an integrated use of intuition and analysis in decision making
• studies from industry and education that demonstrate how to develop intuition, including a ground-breaking research in problem solving
• non-Western perspectives illustrated on case studies from Japan and China
• use of language protocols/methods to bring intuition into our awareness
• new research into group/collective intuition (based on language analysis and quantum physics)
• research related to sensing and sense making.
Due to its focus on bridging theory and practice, the Handbook is of value not only to academics and organizational researchers but also to industry professionals, corporate trainers and university educators who search for answers on how to incorporate intuition into a common skill set. Accessible in style, it will also appeal to educated business readers.

AB - AbstractGiven a closed orientable hyperbolic manifold of dimension $$\ne 3$$
≠
3
we prove that the multiplicity of the Pollicott-Ruelle resonance of the geodesic flow on perpendicular one-forms at zero agrees with the first Betti number of the manifold. Additionally, we prove that this equality is stable under small perturbations of the Riemannian metric and simultaneous small perturbations of the geodesic vector field within the class of contact vector fields. For more general perturbations we get bounds on the multiplicity of the resonance zero on all one-forms in terms of the first and zeroth Betti numbers. Furthermore, we identify for hyperbolic manifolds further resonance spaces whose multiplicities are given by higher Betti numbers.

AB - In order to sustain their competitive advantage, data driven organizations must continue investing in business intelligence and analytics (BI&A) while mitigating inherent cost increases. Research shows that examining outlays by individual BI&A artifact (e.g. reports, analytics) is necessary, but introduction in practice is cumbersome and adoption is slow. BI&A service-oriented cost allocation (BIASOCA) represents an improvement to this situation. This approach enables to render the BI&A cost pool accountable and improves cost transparency, which leads to a higher BI&A penetration of economically viable applications in organizations. Against this background, this paper aims at designing and implementing BIASOCA in a medium-sized company. To record organizational impact and increase customer acceptance, this study is carried out as action design research (ADR). Our findings indicate improvements in BI&A management from working with consumers to locate cost savings and drivers. After invoicing, consumers’ BI&A awareness increased, releasing resources while also making a better understanding of BIASOCA necessary. We detail how to implement BIASOCA in a real-life setting and the challenges attendant in so doing. Our research contributes to theory and practice with a set of design principles highlighting, besides the accuracy of cost accounting, the importance of collaboration, model comprehensibility and strategic alignment.

AB - This investigation concentrates on value similarity between parents and their children during adulthood. The interplay between gender, age, relationship quality, and frequency of contact on value similarity was analyzed. A total of 600 adult German children (53.8% women) and their parents took part in a questionnaire study. Value orientation was measured with a short version of Schwartz’s Portrait Values Questionnaire, and relationship quality with the Network of Relationships Inventory (Furman & Buhrmeister, 1992).Value similarity was higher in mother–daughter dyads compared to mother–son dyads, but in the other dyads, no significant differences were found. Regarding relationship quality, verbal intimacy was not related to value similarity. Parental satisfaction was associated with value similarity in the father–child dyads. Satisfaction, as perceived by adult children, was linked to value similarity in mother–child and father–son dyads. Furthermore, the frequency of contact related to value similarity between mothers and sons.

AB - The increasingly simulation-driven design process of ultrasonic transducers requires several reliable parameters for the description of the material behaviour. Exact results can only be achieved when a single specimen is used in the identification process, which typically is prone to the problem of low sensitivities to certain material parameters and thus high uncertainties. Therefore, a custom electrode topology for increased sensitivity is proposed for a piezoceramic disc. The thereupon conducted measurements of the electric impedance can be used as a starting point for an inverse approach where an equivalent simulation model is used to identify fitting material parameters. An optimisation strategy based on a preliminary sensitivity analysis is presented that leads to a good agreement between measurement and simulation. Furthermore, the proposed measurement procedure is able to evaluate the quality of the simulation model. Hence, different frequency-dependent damping models are presented and evaluated.
