This article introduces the CASA agent development system which seamlessly combines the BDI (belief desire intention) approach with the FIPA agent communication language standard and an integrated specification of fuzzy controllers. The behavior of agents is defined by strategies which basically correspond to extended guarded Horn clauses with priorities. The presented concepts are introduced by an example from computer integrated manufacturing (CIM). The example gives the specification of a fuzzy controller for a manufacturing station in the context of a holonic manufacturing system (HMS).}},

abstract = {{Let L = ℚ(α) be an abelian number field of degree n. Most
algorithms for computing the lattice of subfields of L require the computation
of all the conjugates of α. This is usually achieved by factoring the minimal
polynomial mα(x) of α over L. In practice, the existing algorithms for factoring
polynomials over algebraic number fields can handle only problems of moderate
size. In this paper we describe a fast probabilistic algorithm for computing
the conjugates of α, which is based on p-adic techniques. Given mα(x) and a
rational prime p which does not divide the discriminant disc(mα(x)) of mα(x),
the algorithm computes the Frobenius automorphism of p in time polynomial
in the size of p and in the size of mα(x). By repeatedly applying the algorithm
to randomly chosen primes it is possible to compute all the conjugates of α.}},

Using an effectively one-dimensional tight-binding system Coulomb-induced carrier-correlations up to third-order in the optical field are treated without additional approximations. To illustrate the influence of the different many-body contributions excitonic differential absorption spectra are computed for various polarizations and pump-probe time delays. The simultaneous influence of energetic disorder and correlations on the differential absorption spectra is discussed. Also presented are numerical results for the case when the semiconductor system is placed inside a microcavity in the strong-coupling regime. It is shown that the correlations induce characteristic signatures in the normal mode spectra.}},

The theory is evaluated to analyze ultrafast absorption changes around the exciton resonance in semiconductor quantum-well structures where the relative strength of the different many-body contributions can be manipulated by proper selection of pump and probe polarizations. For two-band systems and oppositely circular polarization it is shown that Coulombic correlation dynamics dominates the optical response. As a consequence, the optical Stark effect in this configuration corresponds to a red shift of the exciton resonance in striking contrast to the usual atomic-like blue shift. The predictions are confirmed by experiments using high-quality InGaAs quantum-well systems.}},
