Today, cloud providers offer customers access to complex applications running on virtualized hardware. Nevertheless, big virtualized data centers become stochastic environments and the simplification on the user side leads to many challenges for the provider. He has to find cost-efficient configurations and has to deal with dynamic environments to ensure service level objectives (SLOs). We introduce a software solution that reduces the degree of human intervention to manage clouds. It is designed as a multi-agent system (MAS) and placed on top of the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) layer. Worker agents allocate resources, configure applications, check the feasibility of requests, and generate cost estimates. They are equipped with application specific knowledge allowing it to estimate the type and number of necessary resources. During runtime, a worker agent monitors the job and adapts its resources to ensure the specified quality of service—even in noisy clouds where the job instances are influenced by other jobs. They interact with a scheduler agent, which takes care of limited resources and does a cost-aware scheduling by assigning jobs to times with low costs. The whole architecture is self-optimizing and able to use public or private clouds. Building a private cloud needs to face the challenge to find a mapping of virtual machines (VMs) to hosts. We present a rule-based mapping algorithm for VMs. It offers an interface where policies can be defined and combined in a generic way. The algorithm performs the initial mapping at request time as well as a remapping during runtime. It deals with policy and infrastructure changes. An energy-aware scheduler and the availability of cheap resources provided by a spot market are analyzed. We evaluated our approach by building up an SaaS stack, which assigns resources in consideration of an energy function and that ensures SLOs of two different applications, a brokerage system and a high-performance computing software. Experiments were done on a real cloud system and by simulations. Universität Osnabrück ER - TY - CONF AB - This paper investigates the properties required to evolve Artificial Neural Networks for distributed control in modular robotics, which typically involves non-linear dynamics and complex interactions in the sensori-motor space. We investigate the relation between macro-scale properties (such as modularity and regularity) and micro-scale properties in Neural Network controllers. We show how neurons capable of multiplicative-like arithmetic operations may increase the performance of controllers in several ways whenever challenging control problems with non-linear dynamics are involved. This paper provides evidence that performance and robustness of evolved controllers can be improved by a combination of carefully chosen micro- and macro-scale neural network properties. The difficulty is increased even more in the case of settings with multiple interacting agents. We apply the artificial homeostatic hormone system (AHHS) approach, which is inspired by the signaling network of unicellular organisms, to control a system of several independently acting agents decentrally. The approach is designed for evaluation-minimal, artificial evolution in order to be applicable to complex modular robotics scenarios. The performance of AHHS controllers is compared with neuroevolution of augmenting topologies (NEAT) in the coupled inverted pendulums benchmark. AHHS controllers are found to be better for multimodular settings. We analyze the evolved controllers with regard to the usage of sensory inputs and the emerging oscillations, and we give a nonlinear dynamics interpretation. The generalization of evolved controllers to initial conditions far from the original conditions is investigated and found to be good. Similarly, the performance of controllers scales well even with module numbers different from the original domain the controller was evolved for. Two reference implementations of a similar controller approach are reported and shown to have shortcomings. We discuss the related work and conclude by summarizing the main contributions of our work. The framework is divided into three modules – the component description, the expert system, and the modelling and process chain optimisation. The component description module enhances a standard CAD model by a voxel-based representation of the graded properties. It allows the target properties to be defined. The expert system proposes process chains capable of producing components according to the requirements of the enhanced CAD model. They usually consist of a sequence of heating, forming, and cooling processes. The dependencies between the applied manufacturing processes need to be considered. Therefore, the robustness of the property distributions achieved in a process step with respect to variations in the input properties is analysed in the third module, in which the process chains are optimised. A method to accomplish this task by performing a model-based sensitivity analysis and subsequent Monte-Carlo simulations of the important parameters is proposed in this paper. The applicability of the method is shown for a thermo-mechanically coupled compression moulding process. In meeting them simulation tools play a central role. Yet it is often impossible for a single developer to foresee the overall impact a design decision will have on the system and on the other domains involved. For this task multi-domain simulation tools exists, but because of its complexity and the different levels of detail that are needed, the effort to specify a complete system from scratch is very high. Another challenge is the selection of the most suitable solution elements provided by the manufacturers. Currently they are often chosen manually from catalogues. The development engineer is therefore usually inclined to employ well-known solution elements and suppliers. To tackle both challenges our aim is an increase in efficiency and innovation by means of generally available solution knowledge, such as well-proven solution patterns, ready-to-use solution elements, and established simulation models [1]. Our paper presents a tool-supported, sequential design process. From the outset, the comprehensive functional capability of the designed system is supervised by means of multi-domain simulation. At significant points in the design process, solution knowledge can be accessed as it is stored in ontologies and therefore available via Semantic Web [2]. Thus, one can overcome barriers resulting from different terminologies or referential systems and furthermore infer further knowledge from the stored knowledge. The paper focuses on an early testing in the conceptual design stage and on the subsequent semantic search for suitable solution elements. After the specification of a principle solution for the mechatronic system by combining solution patterns, an initial multi-domain model of the system is created. This is done on the basis of the active structure and of idealized simulation models which are part of a free library and associated with the chosen solution patterns via the ontologies. In further designing the controlled system and its parameters with the completed model, the developer defines additional criteria to be fed into the subsequent semantic search for solution elements. Information on the latter is provided by the manufacturers as well as detailed simulation models, which are used to analyze the functional capability of the concretized system. Therefore, the corresponding idealized models are replaced automatically with the parameterized models of the solution elements containing for example the specific friction model for the chosen motor. We show this process using the concrete example of a dough-production system. In particular, we focus on its transport system. Resulting requirements for the simulation models and their level of detail are expound, as well as the architecture and benefits of the ontologies. A simple method for comparison and estimation of different digital modulation techniques for SMPA is described. An estimation of the proposed digital polar modulator properties was done by means of a 2.1..2.2 GHz class-F power amplifier. For a CDMA signal with 9.5 dB peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), the class-F based amplifier module driven by DPM pulse train shows more than 1 W output power and more than 10 % of drain efficiency. Its measured gain is 13.5 dB at 60 GHz with a corresponding 3-dB bandwidth of 47-74 GHz. The PAE is above 25% with a supply voltage from 2.2 to 4 V. A cascode stage has been analyzed and used as the amplifier core. The high PAE is achieved by pushing the upper transistor of the cascode stage to weak avalanche area and correct transistor sizing. The linearity is achieved by optimizing the input matching and emitter degeneration. Safe operation conditions of heterojunction bipolar transistors at dc and high frequencies have been investigated at weak avalanche area. A safe operation boundary for high frequencies is given based on our experimental results and analytical derivations. Large-signal stress tests have shown there is no performance degradation and have proved the validity of this safe operation boundary. AU - Sun, Yaoming AU - Fischer, Gerhard G.
