  text: We report the piezoelectric properties of CuO-doped hydrothermal (K,Na)NbO3
    ceramics that can be applied as hard-type lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. To
    date, we have succeeded in synthesizing high-quality KNbO3 and NaNbO3 powders
    by the hydrothermal method, which is based on an ionic reaction at high temperature
    (around 210 $\,^{\circ}$C) and pressure. Increasing both the piezoelectric constant
    d and the mechanical quality factor (Qm) is important for resonance-type piezoelectric
    devices, such as ultrasonic motors and transformers. CuO doping into hydrothermal
    (K,Na)NbO3 ceramics was examined to realize hard-type lead-free piezoelectric
    ceramics. By doping with 1.2 mol \% CuO, Qm was increased and the dielectric loss
    (tan δ) was decreased to 0.5\%. The grain size was also influenced by the amount
    of CuO doping, which indicates that Qm is related to the density. To achieve a
    higher Qm value, the grain size is required to be less than 5 µm; however, excessive
    CuO doping leads to anomalous grain growth. Optimal piezoelectric properties were
    obtained for 1.2 mol \% CuO-doped (K,Na)NbO3; k31 = 0.32, d31 = -44 pC/N, Qm (radial)
    = 959, and tan δ= 0.5\%. These characteristics showed that CuO doping with hydrothermal
    powders is effective for obtaining hard-type ceramics, and the mechanical quality
    factor is more than ten times higher than that of nondoped hydrothermal (K,Na)NbO3
    ceramics. Therefore, compared with the conventional solid-state method, we could
    succeed in obtaining hard-type ceramics by a simple and short process.

  text: Microresonators containing quantum dots find application in devices like single
    photon emitters for quantum information technology as well as low threshold laser
    devices. We demonstrate the fabrication of 60 nm thin zinc-blende AlN microdisks
    including cubic GaN quantum dots using dry chemical etching techniques. Scanning
    electron microscopy analysis reveals the morphology with smooth surfaces of the
    microdisks. Micro-photoluminescence measurements exhibit optically active quantum
    dots. Furthermore this is the first report of resonator modes in the emission
    spectrum of a cubic AlN microdisk.

  text: "Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) were observed in 60 nm thin cubic AlN microdisk
    resonators containing a single layer of non-polar cubic GaN quantum dots. Freestanding
    microdisks were patterned by means of electron beam lithography and a two step
    reactive ion etching process. Micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy investigations
    were performed for optical characterization. We analyzed the mode spacing for
    disk diameters ranging from 2-4 lm. Numerical investigations using three dimensional
    finite difference time domain calculations were in good agreement\r\nwith the
    experimental data. Whispering gallery modes of the radial orders 1 and 2 were
    identified by means of simulated mode field distributions."

  text: The selective deposition and self-assembly of nanospheres from a colloidal
    suspension in trenches on silicon surfaces is investigated using conventional
    light, confocal laser scanning and scanning electron microscopy. Trenches with
    widths of one to several nanosphere diameters are formed on silicon surfaces by
    photolithography and reactive ion etching. The spreading knife convective self-assembly
    technique is employed to distribute the nanosphere suspension on the pre-patterned
    surface. It is shown that this technique is particularly useful in combination
    with a functionalized surface where a selfassembled molecular monolayer changes
    the contact angle such that sphere deposition takes place almost exclusively in
    the trenches. By this, lines selectively filled with a chain of beads with a length
    of 0.5 mm have been achieved.

  text: "In this article we study the elemental distribution and solute solubility
    in nanocrystalline alloys of immiscible components near restricted equilibrium
    for the case of the binary Cu–Ag system. As predicted from thermodynamic considerations,
    a grain boundary segregated monophase alloy is observed in the annealed mechanically
    alloyed state for low Ag content by using atom probe tomography. From the detected
    Ag solute grain boundary enrichment the\r\nsegregation free enthalpy is estimated
    to range between -25 and -49 kJ mol^-1 following the McLean equation, in agreement
    with values reported for coarse-grained Cu–Ag. The extension of the alloying range
    is described by a two-domain thermodynamic model that considers the excess free
    volume in the grain boundaries and the strain in the strain interior on the basis
    of the universal equation of state at negative pressure. To access the grain boundary
    volumetric strain experimentally, a method based on a combination of density measurements
    and microscopical quantification of closed pore areas is presented. Moreover,
    we apply x-ray diffraction line broadening analysis to determine the local strain
    amplitude, which yields a root-mean-square microstrain of \x180.3% for a grain
    size of \x1830 nm. It is shown that the grain boundary free volume represents
    the major origin for the global solubility enhancement in\r\nnanocrystalline Cu–Ag
    at 503 K."

  text: 'Handling run-time dynamics on embedded system-on-chip architectures has become
    more challenging over the years. On the one hand, the impact of workload and physical
    dynamics on the system behavior has dramatically increased. On the other hand,
    embedded architectures have become more complex as they have evolved from single-processor
    systems over multi-processor systems to hybrid multi-core platforms.Static design-time
    techniques no longer provide suitable solutions to deal with the run-time dynamics
    of today''s embedded systems. Therefore, system designers have to apply run-time
    solutions, which have hardly been investigated for hybrid multi-core platforms.In
    this thesis, we present fundamental work in the new area of run-time management
    on hybrid multi-core platforms. We propose a novel architecture, a self-adaptive
    hybrid multi-core system, that combines heterogeneous processors, reconfigurable
    hardware cores, and monitoring cores on a single chip. Using self-adaptation on
    thread-level, our hybrid multi-core systems can effectively perform performance
    and thermal management autonomously at run-time. '

  text: Self-adaptation allows continuously running software systems to operate in
    changing and uncertain contexts while meeting their requirements in a broad range
    of contexts, e.g., from low to high load situations. As a consequence, requirementsfor
    self-adaptive systems are more complex than requirements for static systems as
    they have to explicitly address properties of the self-adaptation layer.While
    approaches exist in the literature to capture this new type of requirements formally,
    their achievement cannot be analyzed in early design phases yet. In this paper,
    we apply RELAX to formally specify non-functional requirements for self-adaptive
    systems. We then apply our model-based SimuLizar approach for a semi-automatic
    analysis to test whether the self-adaptation layer ensures that these non-functional
    requirements are met. We evaluate our approach on the design of a proof-of-concept
    load balancer system. As this evaluation demonstrates, we can iteratively improve
    our system design by improving unsatisfactory self-adaption rules.
