This manufacturing technique has the huge benefit that no forming tool is needed. The knowledge about dimensional deviations which occur in the FDM process is necessary for calculating fits and for determining tolerances. A major challenge is the reproducibility of the dimensional accuracy of FDM parts and the reproducibility between different FDM machines. There are many influential factors on the dimensional accuracy in the FDM process for example geometric, material-specific or process-specific factors, which are considered in this paper. The influence of the part position on the build platform of a Stratasys Fortus 400mc is analyzed in terms of the achievable dimensional accuracy. For this purpose, the temperature distribution in the actively heated build chamber is investigated and possible correlations to the dimensional accuracy are identified. The reproducibility of one machine is examined by a multiple production of the test specimens. In addition, a comparison with three other FDM machines from Stratasys is made. Afterwards, the long-term reproducibility of the dimensional accuracy is verified to consider how environmental influences such as maintenance or modification of machine components affect the dimensional accuracy of the FDM process. To expand the range of materials the requirements for the material properties and the semi-finished products (filaments) must be clarified. For this, a machine- and process-independent rating of the processability is necessary. The established standards for the tensile strength test apply to specimens with nearly isotropic mechanical properties. The FDM process generates anisotropic parts. The properties are mainly influenced by the machine quality and the data processing. It is not possible to test a material for FDM independently of the machine and the data processing. In this paper, machine and process specific influences are investigated. Considering these influences, a custom-built specimen is created to test the tensile strength of the welding seams for polyamide 6. This procedure allows a machine- and process-independent rating of the processability in terms of tensile strength for different materials. AU - Schumacher, C. For their use as a final product, it is necessary that additively manufactured parts strictly adhere to the geometrical requirements of the technical drawing. In this paper, the holes and cylinders of the cylindrical elements are investigated in terms of achievable geometrical accuracy. For this purpose, different test specimens that allow a measurement of inner and outer diameters from 3 to 80 mm were designed. All specimens were measured with a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to evaluate deviations from the nominal dimension and form deviations. The measuring method includes a scanning of the surface to record the course of dimensional deviations over the diameter. Thus, it was possible to visualize how deviations on cylindrical elements manufactured in FDM occur. In order to counteract these deviations and to improve the dimensional accuracy, different shrink factors and filling patterns were investigated. Consequently, an improvement of the dimensional accuracy was achieved. AU - Knoop, F. For this task, we introduce an incremental workflow that is based on our algorithm IC3 with Zones. It proceeds in a cycle in which single models of the system are verified, and the verification results are employed for the reasoning about the entire system. Starting with the smallest instances, the verification of the safety property is carried out fast and efficient. On successful verification, the algorithm produces an inductive strengthening of the safety property. We reuse this result and try to reason about the entire parameterized timed system. To this end, we extrapolate the inductive strengthening into a candidate for the next-larger model. In case this candidate is a valid inductive strengthening for the next larger model, our main theorem reasons about all models of the parameterized timed system, stating that the safety property holds true for all models. Otherwise, the main cycle starts over with the verification of the next larger model. This workflow is iterated indefinitely, until able to reason about the entire parameterized timed system, until a counterexample trace is found, or until the single models become too large to be handled in the verification. We reuse the intermediate results in a Feedback-loop in order to accelerate the verification runs for the single models. Furthermore, we consider an extended formalism in comparison to our previous publications. We show that allocation of chores and classical allocation of goods (items with positive utilities) have some fundamental connections but also differences which prevent a straightforward application of algorithms for goods in the chores setting and viceversa. We prove that an MmS allocation does not need to exist for chores and computing an MmS allocation - if it exists - is strongly NP-hard. In view of these non-existence and complexity results, we present a polynomial-time 2-approximation algorithm for MmS fairness for chores. We then introduce a new fairness concept called optimal MmS that represents the best possible allocation in terms of MmS that is guaranteed to exist. In this paper, we start out by formally defining a policy independent information flow analysis. Next, we show how to specialize this IFA via policy specific variable tracking, and prove soundness of the specialization. We furthermore investigate refinement relationships between policies, allowing an IFA for one policy to be employed for its refinements. For extended flexibility, we go beyond seeing services as a fixed chain of functions. We define the service structure in a flexible way that enables changing the order of functions in case the functionality of the service is not influenced by this, and propose a YANG data model for expressing this flexibility. Flexible structures allow the network orchestration system to choose the optimal composition of service components that for example gives the best results for placement of services in the network. When number of flexible services and number of components in each service increase, combinatorial explosion limits the practical use of this flexibility. In this paper, we describe a selection heuristic that gives a Pareto set of the possible compositions of a service as well as possible combinations of different services, with respect to different optimization objectives. Moreover, we present a heuristic algorithm for placement of a combination of services, which aims at placing service components along shortest paths that have enough capacity for accommodating the services. In addition to assigning jobs to processors, the scheduler must distribute the resource among the processors (e.g., for three processors in shares of 20\%, 15\%, and 65\%) and adjust this distribution over time. Each job $j$ comes with a size $p_j \in \mathbb{R}$ and a resource requirement $r_j > 0$. Jobs do not benefit when receiving a share larger than $r_j$ of the resource. But providing them with a fraction of the resource requirement causes a linear decrease in the processing efficiency. We seek a (non-preemptive) job and resource assignment minimizing the makespan. Our main result is an efficient approximation algorithm which achieves an approximation ratio of $2 + 1/(m-2)$. It can be improved to an (asymptotic) ratio of $1 + 1/(m-1)$ if all jobs have unit size. Our algorithms also imply new results for a well-known bin packing problem with splittable items and a restricted number of allowed item parts per bin.Based upon the above solution, we also derive an approximation algorithm with similar guarantees for a setting in which we introduce so-called tasks each containing several jobs and where we are interested in the average completion time of tasks (a task is completed when all its jobs are completed). However, these technologies currently come with new challenges due to limited lithium ion battery storage density and high battery costs which lead to a considerably reduced range in comparison to conventional internal combustion engine powered vehicles. For this reason, it is desirable to increase the vehicle range without enlarging the battery. When the route and the road slope are known in advance, it is possible to vary the vehicles velocity within certain limits in order to reduce the overall drivetrain energy consumption. This may either result in an increased range or, alternatively, in larger energy reserves for comfort functions such as air conditioning. In this presentation, we formulate the challenge of range extension as a multiobjective optimal control problem. We then apply different numerical methods to calculate the so-called Pareto set of optimal compromises for the drivetrain power profile with respect to the two concurrent objectives battery state of charge and mean velocity. In order to numerically solve the optimal control problem by means of a direct method, a time discretization of the drivetrain power profile is necessary. In combination with a vehicle dynamics simulation model, the optimal control problem is transformed into a high dimensional nonlinear optimization problem. For the approximation of the Pareto set, two different optimization algorithms implemented in the software package GAIO are used. The first one yields a global optimal solution by applying a set-oriented subdivision technique to parameter space. By construction, this technique is limited to coarse discretizations of the drivetrain power profile. In contrast, the second technique, which is based on an image space continuation method, is more suitable when the number of parameters is large while the number of objectives is less than five. We compare the solutions of the two algorithms and study the influence of different discretizations on the quality of the solutions. A MATLAB/Simulink model is used to describe the dynamics of an EV. It is based on a drivetrain efficiency map and considers vehicle properties such as rolling friction and air drag, as well as environmental conditions like slope and ambient temperature. The vehicle model takes into account the traction battery too, enabling an exact prediction of the batterys response to power requests of drivetrain and auxiliary loads, including state of charge. Tagungsband ER - TY - JOUR AB - A current trend in networking and cloud computing is to provide compute resources at widely distributed sites; this is exemplified by developments such as Network Function Virtualisation. This paves the way for wide-area service deployments with improved service quality: e.g. user-perceived response times can be reduced by offering services at nearby sites. But always assigning users to the nearest site can be a bad decision if this site is already highly utilised. This paper formalises two related decisions of allocating compute resources at different sites and assigning users to them with the goal of minimising the response times while the total number of resources to be allocated is limited – a non-linear capacitated Facility Location Problem with integrated queuing systems. To efficiently handle its non-linearity, we introduce five linear problem linearisations and adapt the currently best heuristic for a similar scenario to our scenario. All six approaches are compared in experiments for solution quality and solving time. Surprisingly, our best optimisation formulation outperforms the heuristic in both time and quality. Additionally, we evaluate the influence of distributions of available compute resources in the network on the response time: The time was halved for some configurations. The presented formulation techniques for our problem linearisations are applicable to a broader optimisation domain. Consequently, the first year and the related phenomena of student performance, retention, and dropout have been extensively studied. Research shows that during the first year, the individual student's ability or failure to adapt to the new socio-cultural environment influences his/her academic success. Yet, surprisingly little is known about the actual processes through which students integrate into the socio-cultural context of HE. Applying a socio-cultural approach, our qualitative interview study followed 14 university students through their first year, investigating why some students experience an easier transition into HE compared to others. Our research results in a typology of four transition types characterized by their orientation towards the socio-cultural context of studying. Consequently, there have been repeated attempts to methodologically integrate the design aspect into educational research leading to concepts such as design-based research. Ideally, design decisions are based on clear evidence, obtained through an analysis of data gathered from the intervention. In actual projects, however, design decisions often have to be taken based on data that is incomplete, ambiguous or not meeting established scientific quality standards. We illustrate and discuss examples of an actual design research project where design decisions had to be taken in such ‘bad data’ contexts. Examples include different mixed methods configurations that helped to increase the interpretability and practical significance of the data. We will discuss methodological variants of ‘mixing’ and triangulation such as combining quantitative and qualitative data or applying different analyses on a dataset. In addition, we discuss limitations regarding the consistency between data, design decisions, and resulting effects AU - Jenert, Tobias ID - 4454 TI - Using mixed methods to support educational design decisions in ‘bad data’contexts ER - TY - CONF AB - Higher education institutions (HEIs) have been described as “loosely coupled systems” (Weick, 1976) where academic disciplines have stronger cohesive forces than formal structures (Becher & Trowler, 2001). Disciplinary ties are also extremely important for the development of teaching practices in HEIs. Roxa & Martensson (2011) have shown that higher education faculty form local networks in which they share and develop teaching-related experiences. These networks are influenced by disciplinary affiliation and mediated by senior faculty (Roxa & Martensson, 2015). Considering these findings, its is not self-evident for the actors on different vertical (e.g. management, faculty and education developers) and horizontal levels (e.g. disciplines) of HEIs to work collaboratively. Therefore, the bounded nature of disciplinary networks can actually inhibit the development of educational innovations that require collaboration beyond such “disciplinary microcultures” (Kries & Nierobisch, 2016). Effective educational practices such as problem-based curricula or cross-disciplinary co-teaching require interactions that reach beyond disciplinary and hierarchical boundaries. In this study we investigate a network – “Lehren” – that was initiated in Germany to stimulate educational innovations in HEIs by overcoming the abovementioned boundaries. A series of five workshops brought together 32 potential innovators representing different disciplines, functions (management, teaching faculty, educational developers), and status groups (full professors, post-docs, others). Three of these workshop series provide a total 96 individuals who are intended to form a professional network promoting educational innovation in their respective HEIs. Providing intense support and incentives to collaborate among each other (network meetings, travel funds, online communities), the aim is to develop a heterogeneous network connecting people with, among others, different functions and from different disciplines. Despite its apparent relevance for educational practice, most of the research on reflection remains at a conceptual level (Boud & Walker, 1998; Mann, Gordon & MacLeod, 2007), whilst empirical research mainly focuses on measuring students’ reflection levels. Regarding the effectiveness of specific interventions (e.g. portfolios) to develop reflective skills, there is little empirical evidence going beyond case studies and qualitative accounts. Thus, the purpose of this research was to develop and validate an instrument for measuring student reflection in Higher Education in general and business schools in particular. The questionnaire is designed to measure students’ reflection in three dimensions: students’ reflection levels, their attitudes towards reflection, and supporting and hindering factors influencing students’ reflection processes. A pre-test was conducted at two different universities in Switzerland and Germany to validate the Reflection in Business Education Questionnaire (RIBEQ). In total, 64 students filled in the survey. Exploratory factor analyses and reliability tests showed satisfactory psychometric qualities of the RIBEQ. This study can support further research on student reflection and its development. Also, the questionnaire can be used as a diagnostic instrument for business schools to trace students’ development over time. From a practical point of view, it can also be applied to identify supporting and hindering factors at a particular higher education institution in order to develop practical interventions targeting these factors. Firms need to find ways of increasing the number of ratings and rating scores, but how they can achieve this effectively is less well established. In this paper we analyze the impact of an unconditional gift on customers’ rating behavior in an online field experiment. Contrary to prevalent advice, our results suggest that providing a gift is not necessarily beneficial. Younger customers are significantly less likely to rate when exposed to an unconditional gift. Regression analysis reveals that age serves as a moderator and older customers even respond slightly positive to a gift. Having detected a negative effect of gifts on rating behavior provides first indicative evidence of a possible crowding out of intrinsic motivation in the context of online ratings. This has direct implications for practitioners considering the usage of gifts to elicit online ratings. Yet there is still no method for determining BI&A costs to provide a base for allocation purposes. While literature describes several methods for BI&A cost estimation on an ROI or resource-consumption level, none of these methods considers an overall approach for BI&A. To tackle this problem, we propose a service-oriented cost allocation model which calculates BI&A applications based on defined services, enabling a cost transfer to service consumers. This new approach specifies steps towards deriving a usable pricing scheme for an entire BI&A service portfolio – both for allocation purposes as well as improving cost evaluation of BI&A projects. Moreover, it prevents BI&A departments from being considered as the sole cost driver, increasing customer understanding and cost awareness.
