In order to deal with these challenges, they respond with an increasing number of product variants, which are managed through variants management methods like modularization. Manufacturers of mobility solutions are also facing higher demands regarding environmental protection and sustainability. Therefore, energy consumption plays a key role in current considerations of mobility solutions and the whole life cycle of a product is considered for controlling and cost calculation. Lightweight design plays a major role for achieving objectives regarding a reduced energy consumption and fulfilling a high functionality of mobility solutions. Modular lightweight design combines the advantages of modularization and lightweight design to enable a modular product with the lowest possible weight. The combination of both methods enables the usage of a cost-efficient lightweight design approach. The presented work will give an overview over the economic aspects and discusses how to utilize the combination of both aspects in a profitable way. The emphasis lies on enabling a cost-efficient design to exploit the potentials of modular lightweight design. The estimation of the profitability is especially important for development decisions in an early phase of product development. It also serves to justify the implementation efforts of an elaborate modular lightweight design approach. Influences from logistics, different manufacturing technologies, self-organizing production organization and the efficient use of globally distributed production capacities imply the need to change the design of the system and its development process. Different production sites, for example, require distinctly specified or standardized descriptions of subsystems or elements to be produced. The effort for coordination and formation of interfaces increases, if this fact was not sufficiently taken into account in the design of the subsystem or element. Proximity to the customer implies an important factor for individualized products due to the business model of mass customization. The paper provides overviews of a) transformations in the development process and b) possible solutions for the effective usage of distributed self-organizing production systems. Resulting risks and opportunities from the viewpoint of product engineering are analyzed. Implications for the application of the interdisciplinary development method of the V-model from VDI 2206 guideline are discussed. This paper investigates cyber-physical production systems from a human-centric perspective. The idea of cyber physical production system is evaluated concerning level of codetermination, participation, needed qualification, limitation and possible personal development. By identifying their weaknesses regarding human-centric design, implications for the design of modern production systems are derived. These implications are used for the practical implementation of dedicated requirements. Allerdings bedingt die Modularisierung mit dem Ziel der Mehrfachverwendung von Modulen häufig eine Überdimensionierung und widerspricht dadurch dem Kerngedanken von Leichtbau. Die interdisziplinäre Entwicklung von mechatronischen Systemen verstärkt die Notwendigkeit von Trade-Offs, da alle involvierten Disziplinen unmittelbaren Einfluss auf die Definition der Produkt-Architektur haben. Bislang wird dem Zielkonflikt durch ein iteratives Vorgehen begegnet. Zur Verringerung der Iterationsschleifen und Verkürzung der Produktentwicklung werden die Anforderungen in ein Zielsystem überführt und daraus Entscheidungskriterien zwischen Modularisierung eines mechatronischen Systems und den Potenzialen von Leichtbau abgeleitet. Die „Industrie 4.0-Boxen“ dienen der Nachrüstung dedizierter Sensorik zur Erfassung des Maschinenverhaltens und von Kommunikationstechnik zur Einbindung in die dezentrale Produktionssteuerung. Zusätzlich wurden digitale Zwillinge implementiert, welche das Maschinen- und Benutzerverhalten abbilden, die Steuerung ermöglichen sowie die Informationserfassung und -verarbeitung unterstützen. Damit wird eine Infrastruktur geschaffen, in der Forschung zu den Potenzialen von Cyber-Physischen Produktionssystemen möglich wird. Erkenntnisse werden als Entscheidungsgrundlage für Unternehmen und zur Validierung von Produktionsoptimierungen dienen. Diese Modelle können als Grundlage für die Erstellung eines Digitalen Zwillings für die vorausschauende Instandhaltung verwendet und mit Zustandsdaten des realen Systems kombiniert werden. Die Nutzung der Modelle für den Digitalen Zwilling bietet weitreichende Potenziale und vereinfacht dessen Erzeugung. Das Vorgehen wird anhand strukturierter Interviews mit Projektleitern und Entwicklern und der Fallstudie eines Pedelecs als mechatronischem System validiert. Die Methodik beruht auf dem Ansatz des System-denkens, das ein tiefgreifendes Verständnis mechatronischer Systeme erfordert. Traditionelle Lehrkonzepte stoßen bei der Vermittlung von SE-Kompetenzen und speziell dem Systemdenken an ihre Grenzen [1]. Sprachen wie die Systems Modeling Language (SysML) erlauben die Beschreibung von Systemen und die entwicklungsphasenübergreifende Ver-bindung von Daten und Informationen. Sie unterstützen sowohl das individuelle als auch das kollektive Systemdenken [2]. Mittels Augmented Reality können mechatronische Systeme mit Informationen aus virtuellen Modellen angereichert und damit das Verständnis für komplexe Sachverhalte unterstützt werden (z.B. [3]).
