Using a mixed-method approach, we examine the unique situation of the US marijuana industry. The industry benefits from the superior institutional environment in terms of legal protection and the labor market of the United States. However, due to conflicting state and federal laws it has no legal access to banking. We find significant value effects around three major events that affected future access to banking. These results indicate that banking access remains desirable for the marijuana industry. A survey taken by marijuana SMEs provides insights into what banking services are considered most valuable. We find that marijuana SMEs have problems to obtain financing and handle their transactions largely in cash, resulting in transaction inefficiency and high security concerns. Thereby, we shed light on the value of banks for SMEs in developed countries. It combines the findings of two studies: a) an explorative investigation on the work-related self-conceptions of managers of live music events in OWL (Study 1), and b) a sub-project on cultural participation of VC, which is part of the research project “kulturPreis. Increasing cultural participation through innovative and economically sustainable pricing concepts”, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Study 2).FindingsIt can be stated that there is an imbalance of knowledge: while VC tend to have a clear understanding of which barriers are the responsibility of managers of live music events, managers tend to lack knowledge regarding the needs of VC, and regarding the interrelationships between financial and social barriers facing them. In particular, it discusses the aesthetic practices (Reckwitz, 2008b) of using specific places for making music. In our grounded theory study (Charmaz, 2014) we collected data using interviews, participant observation and videography. As exemplary cases, this article presents two analyses of the use of ‘inspiring places’ and ‘safe places’. The results suggest that perceiving the atmosphere is a fundamental prerequisite for both places. Additionally, the results shed light on aesthetic aspects of mobile music making. To compute the CSS for a given contour, it is systematically convolved (smoothed) with Gaussians with increasing standard deviation. The convolutions are computationally expensive, especially for large and high resolution contours, but can be approximated using box filtering (also known as mean and average filtering). Together with running sums, the convolutions can be accelerated by 2–3 magnitudes without significant loss of precision. Nonetheless, box filtering has not been systematically investigated in connection with CSS computation. In this work, we present a theoretical and experimental analysis of different box-filtering techniques in this context and conclude which is the most efficient implementation. The survey was online until 21 November 2019 and included twenty-two questions, which were divided into five sections: 1) general importance of prevention (n = 4), 2) specifications of the study population (n = 3), 3) implementation of prevention (n = 8), 4) improvement opportunities in prevention (n = 4) and 5) future research areas (n = 3).Results A total of 272 participants completed the survey, representing a total survey participation of 17.7 % of all members. The study population consisted of orthopaedic surgeons (55 % with surgical and 21 % with non-operative orientation), medical students (10 %), physical therapists (8 %) and sports scientists (4 %). Ninety-four percent of all participants stated that they considered the importance of sports injury prevention to be “very high” (68 %) or “high” (26 %). However, almost 70 % of all participants stated that they spend less than one hour per week on injury prevention work. The term “prevention” was clearly defined and practicable for only 40 %, understandable but difficult to implement for 51 %, and unclear and difficult to implement for 9 % of the participants. Seventy-two percent of respondents were aware of existing prevention programs such as “Stop-X” or “FIFA 11 +”, whereas 28 % of participants were uninformed regarding these programs.Conclusions A strong divergence was identified between participants’ perception of the importance of sports injury prevention and the existing implementation of preventive measures.
