abstract = {{State estimation when only a partial model of a considered system is available remains a major challenge in many engineering fields. This work proposes a joint, square-root unscented Kalman filter to estimate states and model uncertainties simultaneously by linear combinations of physics-motivated library functions. Using a sparsity promoting approach, a selection of those linear combinations is chosen and thus an interpretable model can be extracted. Results indicate a small estimation error compared to a traditional square-root unscented Kalman filter and exhibit the enhancement of physically meaningful models.}},

abstract = {{Low-quality models that miss relevant dynamics lead to major challenges in modelbased
state estimation. We address this issue by simultaneously estimating the system’s states
and its model inaccuracies by a square root unscented Kalman filter (SRUKF). Concretely,
we augment the state with the parameter vector of a linear combination containing suitable
functions that approximate the lacking dynamics. Presuming that only a few dynamical terms
are relevant, the parameter vector is claimed to be sparse. In Bayesian setting, properties like
sparsity are expressed by a prior distribution. One common choice for sparsity is a Laplace
distribution. However, due to disadvantages of a Laplacian prior in regards to the SRUKF,
the regularized horseshoe distribution, a Gaussian that approximately features sparsity, is
applied instead. Results exhibit small estimation errors with model improvements detected by
an automated model reduction technique.}},

  abstract     = {{
Abstract
Teachers’ in-depth diagnostic thinking has been shown to be crucial for student-centered teaching as they need to perceive and interpret students’ understanding for well-informed decision-making on adaptive teaching practices. The paper presents a content-related approach to analyzing diagnostic thinking processes with respect to the mathematical knowledge elements that prospective teachers identify as students’ resources and obstacles. Prospective teachers’ challenge is that some relevant knowledge elements first have to be unpacked, because compact concepts (such as the place value concept) or procedures (such as for multi-digit multiplication) comprise several smaller knowledge elements (such as the positional property) that have to be made explicit for students to foster their learning processes adequately. Our study examines what knowledge elements prospective teachers perceive and interpret in a transcript vignettes on multi-digit multiplication (of decimal and natural numbers) and its underlying basic arithmetic concepts (place value understanding and meaning of multiplication) in written diagnostic judgments on students’ resources and obstacles (N = 196). A comparative design within the vignette is used to investigate how far the process of perceiving can be supported by thematic cues. The analysis reveals that those knowledge elements cued in the vignette by being already unpacked and explicitly addressed are perceived and interpreted more often (but with lower correctness) than those that are uncued and therefore have to be unpacked by the prospective teachers themselves. This confirms the need to prepare prospective teachers for unpacking mathematical concepts themselves.
}},

abstract = {{Hurwitz spaces are moduli spaces that classify ramified covers of the projective line on
which a fixed group G acts. Their geometric and arithmetic properties are related to
number theoretical questions, particularly the inverse Galois problem. In this thesis, we
study the connected components of these spaces. Firstly, we prove results concerning
the asymptotic behavior of the count of connected components of Hurwitz spaces as
the number of branch points of the covers they classify grows. Secondly, we establish
stability results for fields of definitions of connected components of Hurwitz spaces
under the gluing operation. These results relate topological and arithmetical properties
of covers. Three expository chapters, devoid of original statements, present the various
objects. In an appendix, we summarize the thesis for the general public.}},
