The focus of this review paper is to provide a state-of-the-art overview of this emerging field at the cross-roads between mathematics and engineering education, in addition to introducing the papers of this special issue. To guide this paper, we posed three review questions: (1) How can current (teaching/learning/study) practices of mathematics in engineering education be characterized with a view towards innovation?; (2) What are the ‘resources’ (cognitive, material, digital, social) used, and what are those that appear also well suited for innovative courses?; (3) What are promising innovative practices in mathematics in engineering education, and what are the implications for curriculum reform? Looking back across the studies we summarized in the review, we conclude that they are lagging behind the more fundamental changes that are happening in engineering education, whilst addressing selected aspects of innovative changes within the current system of engineering education. At the same time, the nine papers of this special issue contribute new perspectives for innovative practices in mathematics in engineering education, for a better understanding of current practices and for future research.}}, author = {{Pepin, Birgit and Biehler, Rolf and Gueudet, Ghislaine}}, issn = {{2198-9745}}, journal = {{International Journal of Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education}}, keywords = {{Education, Mathematics (miscellaneous)}}, number = {{2}}, pages = {{163--188}}, publisher = {{Springer Science and Business Media LLC}}, title = {{{Mathematics in Engineering Education: a Review of the Recent Literature with a View towards Innovative Practices}}}, doi = {{10.1007/s40753-021-00139-8}}, volume = {{7}}, year = {{2021}}, } @article{35781, author = {{Podworny, Susanne and Biehler, Rolf}}, issn = {{1098-6065}}, journal = {{Mathematical Thinking and Learning}}, keywords = {{Developmental and Educational Psychology, Education, General Mathematics}}, number = {{4}}, pages = {{291--311}}, publisher = {{Informa UK Limited}}, title = {{{The process of actively building a model for a randomization test – insights into learners’ modeling activities based on a case study}}}, doi = {{10.1080/10986065.2021.1922837}}, volume = {{24}}, year = {{2021}}, } @inbook{35704, author = {{Winsløw, Carl and Biehler, Rolf and Jaworski, Barbara and Rønning, Frode and Wawro, Megan}}, booktitle = {{Research and Development in University Mathematics Education}}, editor = {{Durand-Guerrier, V. and Hochmuth, R. and Nardi, E. and Winsløw, C.}}, isbn = {{9780429346859}}, pages = {{59--79}}, publisher = {{Routledge}}, title = {{{Education and professional development of university mathematics teachers}}}, doi = {{10.4324/9780429346859-6}}, year = {{2021}}, } @misc{36006, author = {{Hartmann, Alexandra}}, booktitle = {{Kritikon Litterarum}}, issn = {{1865-7249}}, keywords = {{Materials Chemistry, Economics and Econometrics, Media Technology, Forestry}}, number = {{3-4}}, pages = {{404--410}}, publisher = {{Walter de Gruyter GmbH}}, title = {{{Ashe, Bertram D.; Saal, Ilka (eds.). }}, author = {{Hirtz, Raphael and Zheng, Yiran and Rajcsanyi, Luisa S. and Libuda, Lars and Antel, Jochen and Peters, Triinu and Hebebrand, Johannes and Hinney, Anke}}, issn = {{1422-4917}}, journal = {{Zeitschrift für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie}}, keywords = {{Psychiatry and Mental health, Clinical Psychology, General Medicine, Pediatrics, Perinatology and Child Health}}, number = {{3}}, pages = {{175--185}}, publisher = {{Hogrefe Publishing Group}}, title = {{{Ebenen der genetischen Analyse komplexer Phänotypen am Beispiel der Anorexia nervosa und der Varianz des Körpergewichts}}}, doi = {{10.1024/1422-4917/a000829}}, volume = {{50}}, year = {{2021}}, } @inbook{34604, author = {{Kamp, Hermann}}, booktitle = {{Quand flamboyait la toison d’or. She was famous in her lifetime and was not completely forgotten thereafter. Among her admirers, correspondents and friends were the most acknowledged scholars of her time, including Voltaire, Clairault, Maupertuis, Diderot, Helvetius, La Mettrie, Buffon, Christian Wolff, Leonard Euler, and Johann II Bernoulli. Her philosophical work enjoyed high reputation and her opus magnum, the Institutions physiques, was translated into Italian and German and proved her to be an intellectual of European stature. Its defense of living forces and its implied forecast into dynamics as well as her methodological grounding of scientific knowledge as hypothetical, impacted philosophy and science. Reality must by nature escape us. What we perceive are phenomena. Du Châtelet explains the function of space and time to trace us back to the origin of phenomena. Her influence on Kant is evident. Next to her writings in physics, mathematics, philosophy, language, and logic, she contributed to morality and ethics. Du Châtelet left an opus of quite systematic breadth. To understand how the Corona crisis affected students, first this article explains the structural and social inequalities in the German higher education system, using Tinto's (1975; 1997) student engagement theory. Second, the concept of Bergman-Rosamond et al. (2020) is used to analyze the challenges that Corona has raised for students, including current surveys. We found that the closure of the social space campus (and the Corona crisis as a whole) particularly hit hard those students who had previously been affected by (intersectional) inequality. Therefore, to lessen the specific challenges associated with the ad hoc transition to digital studying, the creation of a digital community of learning can help. We demonstrate how such a community can be created by the example seminar, "Digital practices: an autoethnographic observation". During the seminar, students recorded their digital technology use in a journal, and we analyzed the diary entries using the collaborate autoethnography method. The seminar example shows that this method is well suited for the development of a community of learning as it not only places students in the spotlight but as students work together on a topic they get to know each other, and a basis of trust is created through peer-feedback. Therefore, it was important to have a digital space (in this case Mahara) where the exchange could take place. The continuous insight into the students’ "learning status" enabled the lecturer to promote the learning and provide individual assistance for the students.}}, author = {{Steinhardt, Isabel}}, journal = {{ISA Pedagogy Series}}, keywords = {{Intersectionality, inequality, gender, diversity, higher-education, crisis}}, number = {{1}}, pages = {{42--59}}, publisher = {{International Sociology Association}}, title = {{{Students in the spotlight: Using collaborative autoethnography to build a community of learning in the Corona crisis}}}, volume = {{1}}, year = {{2021}}, } @techreport{36551, abstract = {{The call for free access to research data and materials is becoming louder and louder from the political and scientific communities in Germany. More and more researchers are facing demands to open up qualitative research data for scientific purposes. They often have a general interest in sharing their data, but are unsure how to proceed. This handout was developed to provide an initial introduction to opening and sharing qualitative data. It was developed at a workshop held in Berlin in January 2020, organized by the research group „Digitization of Science“ of the Weizenbaum Institute, together with its associate researcher Dr. Isabel Steinhardt from the University of Kassel. The workshop involved staff from German research data centers as well as mentees and mentors from the Fellow Program Open Science who already have experience with Open Science, qualitative research, and interdisciplinary research. The handout is addressed primarily to qualitatively researching scientists in Germany. For this reason, it was initially written in German. One year later, we have now decided to translate the handout into English as well. The reasons are twofold: first, we want to make it accessible to researchers in Germany with little knowledge of German. Second, we also want to give interested people outside Germany an insight into the German system and the German discussion about opening up and sharing qualitative data. Due to the objectives and the history of its development, the handout focuses on the German context. Yet, how mobile professionals negotiate the meaning of their homes in ‘liquid times’ and what homemaking practices they use to deal with the temporal uncertainty of their homes are questions that still require further research. This article – based on ethnographic research on German and American managers conducted in China, Germany and the United States between 2011 and 2014 – contributes to this research question by examining how mobile professionals make sense of the transience of their current homes and how transience is reflected in their homemaking practices. The article argues that for mobile professionals the home becomes a critical place not only because of new multilocal spatialities but also because of new transient temporalities. Due to the corporate practice of giving successive temporary contracts, the mobile managers’ everyday life is characterized by a ‘permanent provisionality’, that is, an incongruence of the initially imagined and the actual time horizons of their mobility.
