Their appearance was explained by geometric optics and total internal reflection. The setae also increase the emissivity of the ant, as they form an effective medium. This work provides additional data on microstructural details of the setae that are used to simulate the scattering of an individual seta to explain their influence on the optical properties. This is achieved by characterization of their structure using light microscopy and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. How the microstructural features influence scattering is investigated wave-optically within the limits of finite-difference time-domain simulations from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared spectral range to elucidate the optical effects beyond ray optics and effective medium theory. In this context, wide aperture automotive radars of 1m length or more and resolution close to 0.1° in azimuth and 0.5° in elevation could be beneficial. To enable coherent processing of arrays with such large aperture, prior (i.e offline) and online calibration are necessary: channel imbalances (gains and phases) and three dimensional coordinates of transmit and receive elements need to be determined. We propose a calibration strategy based on alternating steps between the two subtasks of i) channel imbalance estimation with ‘known’ array positions, by applying a singular value decomposition to the resulting tensor calculus problem; and ii) antenna position estimation with ’known’ channel imbalances, by numerically maximizing the Bayesian posterior probability; in both cases operating on range/Doppler snapshots of disjoint targets (with potentially unknown locations). Simulation studies based on the parameters of a MIMO 8x6 linear sparse array show promising results as long as the initial position errors do not exceed half a wavelength (2mm), beyond which we observe strong effects of ambiguity. However, previous studies have shown that, when shipped to end users such as development or security teams, the findings of these tools are often unsatisfying. Users report high numbers of false positives or long analysis times, making the tools unusable in the daily workflow. To address this, SAST tool creators provide a wide range of configuration options, such as customization of rules through domain-specific languages or specification of the application-specific analysis scope. In this paper, we study the configuration space of selected existing SAST tools when used within the integrated development environment (IDE). We focus on the configuration options that impact three dimensions, for which a trade-off is unavoidable, i.e., precision, recall, and analysis runtime. We perform a between-subjects user study with 40 users from multiple development and security teams - to our knowledge, the largest population for this kind of user study in the software engineering community. The results show that users who configure SAST tools are more effective in resolving security vulnerabilities detected by the tools than those using the default configuration. Based on post-study interviews, we identify common strategies that users have while configuring the SAST tools to provide further insights for tool creators. Finally, an evaluation of the configuration options of two commercial SAST tools, Fortify and CheckMarx, reveals that a quarter of the users do not understand the configuration options provided.
