This article is based on a real scenario from the rail vehicle industry in which the introduction of JIT, kitting and complete deliveries has a negative impact on delivery reliability. Service-oriented manufacturing systems and self-optimizing manufacturing resources offer the required flexibility to consider these objectives in accordance with the current organizational and economical situation. On the downside, this increase in flexibility make the control of manufacturing systems more difficult and presents new challenges regarding the scheduling. To meet these challenges, we developed scheduling framework that supports alternative process plans and considers the internal states trajectories of resources. In their concrete application a leading company from the construction supply industry has to make a decision on setting up of a spare part logistic. Three future alternatives (negative, constant, positive market growth) on market trends are simulated with a Monte Carlo simulation by considering a given demand history and possible locations for storage facilities were isolated by applying the Steiner-Weber method. Finally solving a mixed-integer formulation of the Uncapacitated-Facility-Location-Problem gives information on opening/closing new/existing storage facilities by minimizing all relevant costs. Arranged equipment, such as conveyors or machines, includes the need to model and determine motion paths for moving objects like forklifts or automatically guided vehicles, so that the simulation framework is able to navigate all vehicles across those motion paths. After analyzing first scenarios, the user often carries out layout changes in the simulation model, e.g. moving, adding or deleting equipment. However, those changes cause time consuming, additional modeling of the motion paths for the user. Our motion planning algorithm reduces these changes by automatically determining the motion paths for moving objects, depending on an actual model layout without colliding with other objects. The algorithm works on the basis of the virtual scenes 3D-data used for the simulation models visualization.
