Attributing the losses mainly to sidewall roughness, we employ a simple perturbational procedure, based on rigorously computed mode profiles of idealized channels, to estimate the attenuation for waveguides with different cross sections. We show how the degree of impenetrability of dielectric inclusions plays a substantial role in controlling the coercive field, remnant and saturation polarizations of the homogenized materials. Therefore, already used systems are retrofitted by \r\nintegrating sensors to monitor their performance and \r\nfunctionality, enabling accurate diagnosis of their condition and \r\nprediction of their remaining useful life. One of the main \r\nchallenges in this field is identified in the missing data from the \r\ntime where the retrofitted system has already run but without \r\nbeing monitored by sensors. In this paper, a novel approach for \r\nthe combined diagnostics and prognostics of retrofitted systems is \r\nproposed. The methodology aims to provide an accurate diagnosis \r\nof the system’s health state and estimation of the remaining useful \r\nlife by a combination of a machine learning and expert knowledge. \r\nTo evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, a case \r\nstudy involving a retrofitted system in an industrial setting is \r\nselected and applied. It is demonstrated that the approach \r\neffectively diagnose the current system’s health state and \r\naccurately predict its remaining useful life, thereby enabling \r\npredictive maintenance and decision-making. We consider the <jats:italic>reconfigurable circuit extension</jats:italic> (Feldmann et al. in J Comput Biol 29(4):317–343. <jats:ext-link xmlns:xlink=\"http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink\" ext-link-type=\"doi\" xlink:href=\"10.1089/cmb.2021.0363\">https://doi.org/10.1089/cmb.2021.0363</jats:ext-link>, 2022) of the geometric amoebot model that allows the amoebot structure to interconnect amoebots by so-called <jats:italic>circuits</jats:italic>. A circuit permits the instantaneous transmission of signals between the connected amoebots. In this paper, we examine the structural power of the reconfigurable circuits. We start with fundamental problems like the <jats:italic>stripe computation problem</jats:italic> where, given any connected amoebot structure <jats:italic>S</jats:italic>, an amoebot <jats:italic>u</jats:italic> in <jats:italic>S</jats:italic>, and some axis <jats:italic>X</jats:italic>, all amoebots belonging to axis <jats:italic>X</jats:italic> through <jats:italic>u</jats:italic> have to be identified. Second, we consider the <jats:italic>global maximum problem</jats:italic>, which identifies an amoebot at the highest possible position with respect to some direction in some given amoebot (sub)structure. A solution to this problem can be used to solve the <jats:italic>skeleton problem</jats:italic>, where a cycle of amoebots has to be found in the given amoebot structure which contains all boundary amoebots. A canonical solution to that problem can be used to come up with a canonical path, which provides a unique characterization of the shape of the given amoebot structure. Constructing canonical paths for different directions allows the amoebots to set up a spanning tree and to check symmetry properties of the given amoebot structure. The problems are important for a number of applications like rapid shape transformation, energy dissemination, and structural monitoring. It includes an experimental study in a pilot plant setup and a theoretical analysis with a rate‐based model. The model was validated against the measured column profiles of temperature and CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> concentration in both liquid and gas phases. Model‐based parameter sensitivity studies revealed inherent challenges for an effective absorption process. A slow reaction rate and suboptimal chemical equilibrium conditions were identified as key limitations, restricting the absorption efficiency and CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> loading capacity of the glucosamine solution.
