However, previous studies have shown that, when shipped to end users such as development or security teams, the findings of these tools are often unsatisfying. Users report high numbers of false positives or long analysis times, making the tools unusable in the daily workflow. To address this, SAST tool creators provide a wide range of configuration options, such as customization of rules through domain-specific languages or specification of the application-specific analysis scope. In this paper, we study the configuration space of selected existing SAST tools when used within the integrated development environment (IDE). We focus on the configuration options that impact three dimensions, for which a trade-off is unavoidable, i.e., precision, recall, and analysis runtime. We perform a between-subjects user study with 40 users from multiple development and security teams - to our knowledge, the largest population for this kind of user study in the software engineering community. The results show that users who configure SAST tools are more effective in resolving security vulnerabilities detected by the tools than those using the default configuration. Based on post-study interviews, we identify common strategies that users have while configuring the SAST tools to provide further insights for tool creators. Finally, an evaluation of the configuration options of two commercial SAST tools, Fortify and CheckMarx, reveals that a quarter of the users do not understand the configuration options provided. The configuration options that are found most useful relate to the analysis scope.
","lang":"eng"}],"status":"public","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","date_updated":"2023-12-04T11:29:49Z","date_created":"2023-12-04T11:14:34Z","author":[{"id":"41936","full_name":"Piskachev, Goran","last_name":"Piskachev","orcid":"0000-0003-4424-5838","first_name":"Goran"},{"first_name":"Matthias","last_name":"Becker","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2465-9347","id":"4870","full_name":"Becker, Matthias"},{"orcid":"0000-0003-3470-3647","last_name":"Bodden","full_name":"Bodden, Eric","id":"59256","first_name":"Eric"}],"volume":28,"title":"Can the configuration of static analyses make resolving security vulnerabilities more effective? - A user study","doi":"10.1007/s10664-023-10354-3","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1382-3256","1573-7616"]},"issue":"5","year":"2023","citation":{"ama":"Piskachev G, Becker M, Bodden E. The new requirements that come with Open Science poses researchers with several challenges. While most of these challenges have already been addressed in several studies, little attention has been paid so far to the underlying Open Science practices (OSP). An exploratory study was conducted focusing on the OSP relating to sharing and using data. 13 researchers from the Weizenbaum Institute were interviewed. The Weizenbaum Institute is an interdisciplinary research institute in Germany that was founded in 2017. To reconstruct OSP a grounded theory methodology (Strauss in Qualitative Analysis for Social Scientists, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1987) was used and classified OSP into open production, open distribution and open consumption (Smith in Openness as social praxis. First Monday, 2017). The research shows that apart from the disciplinary background and research environment, the methodological approach and the type of research data play a major role in the context of OSP. The interviewees’ self-attributions related to the types of data they work with: qualitative, quantitative, social media and source code. With regard to the methodological approach and type of data, it was uncovered that uncertainties and missing knowledge, data protection, competitive disadvantages, vulnerability and costs are the main reasons for the lack of openness. The analyses further revealed that knowledge and established data infrastructures as well as competitive advantages act as drivers for openness. Because of the link between research data and OSP, the authors of this paper argue that in order to promote OSP, the methodological approach and the type of research data must also be considered.
"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Isabel","last_name":"Steinhardt","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2590-6189","full_name":"Steinhardt, Isabel","id":"90339"},{"first_name":"Mareike","full_name":"Bauer, Mareike","last_name":"Bauer"},{"first_name":"Hannes","full_name":"Wünsche, Hannes","last_name":"Wünsche"},{"last_name":"Schimmler","full_name":"Schimmler, Sonja","first_name":"Sonja"}],"volume":57,"date_updated":"2023-12-04T12:53:39Z","oa":"1","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"doi":"10.1007/s11135-022-01524-4","publication_status":"published","publication_identifier":{"issn":["0033-5177","1573-7845"]},"has_accepted_license":"1","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Steinhardt_Bauer_Wünsche_Schimmler_2023, title={The connection of open science practices and the methodological approach of researchers}, volume={57}, DOI={<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11135-022-01524-4\">10.1007/s11135-022-01524-4</a>}, number={4}, journal={Quality &#38; Quantity}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Steinhardt, Isabel and Bauer, Mareike and Wünsche, Hannes and Schimmler, Sonja}, year={2023}, pages={3621–3636} }","mla":"Steinhardt, Isabel, et al. “The Connection of Open Science Practices and the Methodological Approach of Researchers.” <i>Quality &#38; Quantity</i>, vol. 57, no. 4, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2023, pp. 3621–36, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.1007/s11135-022-01524-4\">10.1007/s11135-022-01524-4</a>.","short":"I. The ratchet-up mechanism prescribes that parties’ commitments to the global response to climate change cannot decrease over time, and our results show that its effect is detrimental. We design a public goods game to study whether cooperation is promoted by an amendment to the mechanism that stipulates that all agents must contribute at least a collectively chosen minimum based on the principle of the lowest common denominator. We find that binding collective minimum contributions improve the effectiveness of the ratchet-up mechanism. Non-binding minimum contributions, by contrast, do not encourage cooperation. Our data indicate that the difference is attributable to conditional cooperative dynamics. If other participants contribute less than the collective minimum contribution, even initially cooperative participants start to negatively reciprocate this form of non-compliance by contributing less.","lang":"eng"}],"type":"journal_article","publication":"Journal of Environmental Economics and Management","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.4288327","title":"Collective Minimum Contributions to Counteract the Ratchet Effect in the Voluntary Provision of Public Goods","date_created":"2023-09-16T11:52:21Z","author":[{"first_name":"Marius","full_name":"Alt, Marius","last_name":"Alt"},{"last_name":"Kesternich","full_name":"Kesternich, Martin","id":"98922","first_name":"Martin"},{"first_name":"Carlo","full_name":"Gallier, Carlo","last_name":"Gallier"},{"last_name":"Sturm","full_name":"Sturm, Bodo","first_name":"Bodo"}],"date_updated":"2023-12-04T12:27:27Z","citation":{"mla":"Alt, Marius, et al. “Collective Minimum Contributions to Counteract the Ratchet Effect in the Voluntary Provision of Public Goods.” <i>Journal of Environmental Economics and Management</i>, 2023, doi:<a href=\"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.4288327\">10.2139/ssrn.4288327</a>.","short":"M. This chapter examines the potential and the risks of this development from an interdisciplinary perspective. It defines the ‘global digital twin’ of a human being as the sum of all digitally stored information and predictive knowledge about a person. It points out that, compared to the digital twin of a machine, the human global digital twin is far more complex because it comprises the genetic code and the biographic code of a person. The genetic code contains not only a simple ‘construction plan’ but also hereditary information, in a form that is difficult to read. The biographic code contains all other information that can be assembled about a person, which is obtained via data from cameras, microphones, or other sensors, as well as general personal information. When the growing wealth of information concerning the genetic code and the biographical code is properly utilised, insights from biology and the behavioural sciences may be used to predict personal events such as health problems, job resignations, or even crimes. Because our own interests and those of private firms are partly in conflict over the use of this powerful knowledge, it is still unclear whether the global digital twins of humans will become a liberating or disciplining force for citizens. On the one hand, human beings are not machines: They are aware of their digital twin and therefore are able to influence it throughout their lives. Because of their free will, human beings are in general difficult to predict. Dystopias of full control over individual behaviour are therefore unlikely to materialise. On the other hand, private firms are beginning to take advantage of the available digital twins of humans by monopolising data access and by commercialising predictive knowledge. This is problematic because, unlike machines, human beings cannot only benefit from but also suffer due to their digital twins as they attempt to shape their own lives. We illustrate these issues with some examples and arrive at two conclusions: It is in the public interest for people to be granted more property rights over their personal global digital twins, and publicly funded research needs to become more interdisciplinary, much like private firms that have already begun to perform interdisciplinary research."}],"status":"public","publication":"The Digital Twin of Human","type":"book_chapter","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"49469","department":[{"_id":"19"},{"_id":"185"}],"user_id":"54657","year":"2023","citation":{"short":"T.D.
