The task in multiobjective optimization and multiobjective optimal control is therefore to compute the set of optimal compromises (the Pareto set) between the conflicting objectives. The advances in algorithms and the increasing interest in Pareto-optimal solutions have led to a wide range of new applications related to optimal and feedback control - potentially with non-smoothness both on the level of the objectives or in the system dynamics. This results in new challenges such as dealing with expensive models (e.g., governed by partial differential equations (PDEs)) and developing dedicated algorithms handling the non-smoothness. Since in contrast to single-objective optimization, the Pareto set generally consists of an infinite number of solutions, the computational effort can quickly become challenging, which is particularly problematic when the objectives are costly to evaluate or when a solution has to be presented very quickly. This article gives an overview of recent developments in the field of multiobjective optimization of non-smooth PDE-constrained problems. In particular we report on the advances achieved within Project 2 \"Multiobjective Optimization of Non-Smooth PDE-Constrained Problems - Switches, State Constraints and Model Order Reduction\" of the DFG Priority Programm 1962 \"Non-smooth and Complementarity-based Distributed Parameter Systems: Simulation and Hierarchical Optimization\"."}],"citation":{"chicago":"Bernreuther, Marco, Michael Dellnitz, Bennet Gebken, Georg Müller, Sebastian Peitz, Konstantin Sonntag, and Stefan Volkwein. “Multiobjective Optimization of Non-Smooth PDE-Constrained Problems.” In DFG Priority Programme 1962. To breach the gap between the immense promises we see in RL and the applicability in complex engineering systems, the main challenges are the massive requirements in terms of the training data, as well as the lack of performance guarantees. We present a solution for the first issue using a data-driven surrogate model in the form of a convolutional LSTM with actuation. We demonstrate that learning an actuated model in parallel to training the RL agent significantly reduces the total amount of required data sampled from the real system. Furthermore, we show that iteratively updating the model is of major importance to avoid biases in the RL training. Detailed ablation studies reveal the most important ingredients of the modeling process. However, this requires a large number of simulations with varying parameters and/or input pulses, which renders numerical studies expensive. This article investigates how we can use data-driven surrogate models based on the Koopman operator to accelerate this process. In order to be successful, we require a model that is accurate over a large number of time steps. To this end, we employ a bilinear Koopman model using extended dynamic mode decomposition and simulate the optical Bloch equations for an ensemble of inhomogeneously broadened two-level systems. Such systems are well suited to describe the excitation of excitonic resonances in semiconductor nanostructures, for example, ensembles of semiconductor quantum dots. We perform a detailed study on the required number of system simulations such that the resulting data-driven Koopman model is sufficiently accurate for a wide range of parameter settings. We analyze the L2 error and the relative error of the photon echo peak and investigate how the control positions relate to the stabilization. After proper training, the dynamics of the quantum ensemble can be predicted accurately and numerically very efficiently by our methods.","lang":"eng"}],"page":"7964-7969"},{"type":"conference","intvolume":" 2437","publication_status":"published","year":"2024","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"author":[{"first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","last_name":"Gräßler","id":"47565"},{"id":"58595","full_name":"Özcan, Deniz","first_name":"Deniz","last_name":"Özcan"}],"_id":"55431","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"title":"Anwendungspotenziale von Künstlicher Intelligenz im Model-Based Systems Engineering für automatisierte Systeme","place":"Düsseldorf","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, Iris, and Deniz Özcan. “Anwendungspotenziale von Künstlicher Intelligenz im Model-Based Systems Engineering für automatisierte Systeme.” Automation 2024, edited by VDI Wissensforum GmbH, vol. 2437, VDI Verlag, 2024, pp. 363–374, doi:10.51202/9783181024379-363.","short":"I. Histories of Tax Evasion, Avoidance and Resistance shows how different groups and individuals around the globe have succeeded or failed in not paying their due taxes, whether in kind or in cash, on their properties or on their crops.\r\n\r\nIt analyses how, throughout history, wealthy and poor taxpayers have tried to avoid or reduce their tax burden by negotiating with tax authorities, through practices of legal or illegal tax evasion, by filing lawsuits, seeking armed resistance or by migration, and how state authorities have dealt with such acts of claim making, defiance, open resistance or elusion. It fills an important research gap in tax history, addressing questions of tax morale and fairness, and how social and political inequality was negotiated through taxation. It gives rich insights into the development of citizen-state relationships throughout the course of history. The book comprises case studies from Ancient Athens, Roman Egypt, Medieval Europe, Early Modern Mexico, the Ottoman Empire, Nigeria under British colonial rule, the United Kingdom of the early 20th century, Greece during the Second World War, as well as West Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and the United States in the 20th century, including transnational entanglements in the world of late-modern offshore finance and taxation. The authors are experts in fiscal, economic, financial, legal, social and/or cultural history.\r\nThe book is intended for students, researchers and scholars of economic and financial history, social and world history and political economy.\r\nThe Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 license.","lang":"eng"}],"quality_controlled":"1","publisher":"Routledge","file":[{"creator":"schoenha","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_size":4393218,"date_created":"2022-12-19T10:44:55Z","relation":"main_file","access_level":"closed","file_id":"34545","date_updated":"2022-12-19T10:44:55Z","file_name":"Schönhärl_Hürlimann_Rohde_Histories_Tax_Evasion.pdf"}],"oa":"1","status":"public","date_updated":"2022-12-19T11:03:07Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"keyword":["Tax History","Financial History"],"user_id":"89037"},{"department":[{"_id":"445"}],"year":"2023","type":"book_chapter","main_file_link":[{"url":"https://www.routledge.com/Histories-of-Tax-Evasion-Avoidance-and-Resistance/Schonharl-Hurlimann-Rohde/p/book/9781032366739#","open_access":"1"}],"author":[{"id":"89037","last_name":"Schönhärl","orcid":"0000-0002-7967-3261","first_name":"Korinna","full_name":"Schönhärl, Korinna"},{"full_name":"Hürlimann, Gisela","first_name":"Gisela","last_name":"Hürlimann"},{"last_name":"Rohde","full_name":"Rohde, Dorothea","first_name":"Dorothea"}],"_id":"34546","date_created":"2022-12-19T10:53:07Z","series_title":"Financial History","citation":{"mla":"Schönhärl, Korinna, et al. “ The Ability and Intention of Not Paying Taxes in History. From a modern legal perspective, taxes are compulsory transfers of resources that households and enterprises pay to one or several government bodies without receiving an individual, specific benefit in return. Historians have dealt with not paying taxes in various contexts, such as analysing tax resistance and tax resistance movements in history. Tax law is best understood as an outcome of long-term, often conflictual, negotiations and as an expression of specific political mentalities and ideologies. As a consequence, tax law and sometimes even the tax juridical system have a strongly politicised character. Loopholes in tax legislation that enable or facilitate avoidance or evasion can thus be regarded as a result of the interest-driven politics of parliamentary majorities, as the success of concerted lobby pressure.","lang":"eng"}],"publisher":"Routledge","quality_controlled":"1"},{"author":[{"last_name":"Schönhärl","orcid":"0000-0002-7967-3261","first_name":"Korinna","full_name":"Schönhärl, Korinna","id":"89037"}],"_id":"34547","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1"}],"publication_status":"published","year":"2023","department":[{"_id":"445"}],"type":"book_chapter","page":"154-167","publication_identifier":{"eisbn":["9781003333197"]},"date_created":"2022-12-19T10:57:50Z","title":" How to Create a Taxpaying Spirit. In contrast to America's most popular cartoon character 11 years earlier, Erwin Putzke is in a terrible mood at the beginning of the short film “Putzke wants to know”. The family father and electrician with a workshop of his own is annoyed and upset by the duty of filling in his tax return, grumbling at his wife and daughter and even at their budgie.
