Nearly two decades ago, the service system concept was introduced as a foundational abstraction in service research, drawing on ideas from the service-dominant logic (S-D logic) of marketing. Despite its widespread adoption in service research, particularly in the IS discipline, the service system concept lacks a solid theoretical foundation. This has resulted in conceptual ambiguity and overlap with related constructs, such as service ecosystems. Moreover, it has largely remained a static analytical lens, insufficiently capturing dynamic service phenomena, including value co-creation and co-destruction, as well as the emergence of institutional arrangements. To address these limitations, we propose Luhmann’s systems theory (LST) as a robust framework for conceptualizing service systems as autopoietic (self-creating) systems, in which communication serves as the fundamental mechanism that drives value co-creation. We derive five theoretical propositions from this re-conceptualization that clarify conceptual ambiguity and allow researchers to explore dynamic service phenomena in greater depth. Given LST’s general approach, our conceptualization provides a theoretically grounded, interdisciplinary foundation for advancing service research.","lang":"eng"}],"file":[{"content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"65477","file_size":2793039,"access_level":"closed","file_name":"Service is Communication - EM Paper.pdf","date_updated":"2026-04-21T13:14:30Z","relation":"main_file","date_created":"2026-04-21T13:14:30Z","creator":"dabe"}],"date_created":"2026-04-21T13:13:02Z","type":"journal_article","keyword":["Service system","Service ecosystem","Systems theory","Service research"],"department":[{"_id":"195"},{"_id":"534"}],"title":"Service through communication—Conceptualizing service systems with Luhmann’s systems theory","year":"2026","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1019-6781","1422-8890"]},"author":[{"first_name":"Daniel","last_name":"Beverungen","full_name":"Beverungen, Daniel"},{"first_name":"Jens","last_name":"Poeppelbuss","full_name":"Poeppelbuss, Jens"},{"last_name":"Hemmrich","first_name":"Simon","full_name":"Hemmrich, Simon"},{"first_name":"Taskeen","last_name":"Iqbal","full_name":"Iqbal, Taskeen"}],"date_updated":"2026-06-11T13:18:09Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 36","article_type":"original","main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://link.springer.com/content/pdf/10.1007/s12525-026-00889-w.pdf"}],"article_number":"37","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1007/s12525-026-00889-w","file_date_updated":"2026-04-21T13:14:30Z","citation":{"short":"D. Recently, it has been experimentally demonstrated that photonic platforms based on Gaussian boson sampling (GBS) are capable of performing these simulations. However, whether an actual GBS approach is required depends on the molecule under investigation. To develop a better understanding on the requirements for simulating vibronic spectra, we explore connections between theoretical approximations in physical chemistry and their photonic counterparts. Mapping these approximations into photonics, we show that for certain molecules the GBS approach is unnecessary. We place special emphasis on the linear coupling approximation, which in photonics corresponds to sampling from multiple coherent states. By implementing this approach in experiments, we demonstrate improved similarities over previously reported GBS results for formic acid and identify the particular attributes that a molecule must exhibit for this, and other approximations, to be valid. These results highlight the importance in forming deeper connections between traditional methods and photonic approaches."}],"related_material":{"link":[{"url":"https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.18969354","relation":"research_data"}]},"_id":"65847","publisher":"Springer Science and Business Media LLC","user_id":"73665","volume":12,"status":"public","oa":"1","citation":{"mla":"Eickmann, Jan-Lucas, et al. “Bridging Chemistry and Gaussian Boson Sampling: A Photonic Hierarchy of Approximations for Molecular Vibronic Spectra.” Npj Quantum Information, vol. 12, no. 1, 89, Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2026, doi:10.1038/s41534-026-01250-x.","bibtex":"@article{Eickmann_Luo_Roiz_Lammers_Atzeni_Pandey_Lütkewitte_Shirazi_Schlue_Brecht_et al._2026, title={Bridging chemistry and Gaussian boson sampling: a photonic hierarchy of approximations for molecular vibronic spectra}, volume={12}, DOI={10.1038/s41534-026-01250-x}, number={189}, journal={npj Quantum Information}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Eickmann, Jan-Lucas and Luo, Kai-Hong and Roiz, Mikhail and Lammers, Jonas and Atzeni, Simone and Pandey, Cheeranjiv and Lütkewitte, Florian and Shirazi, Reza G. and Schlue, Fabian and Brecht, Benjamin and et al.}, year={2026} }","ama":"Eickmann J-L, Luo K-H, Roiz M, et al. We employ a two-phase solution framework: in phase 1, we solve the Charging Location and Electric Vehicle Scheduling Problem to generate vehicle schedules that are feasible for electric operation; in phase 2, these schedules serve as input to a multi-period transition planning model that minimizes the total cost of ownership while determining fleet replacement and charging infrastructure deployment. Our experiments show that schedules obtained from solving the integrated charging location and vehicle scheduling problem significantly outperform traditional methods, resulting in lower total cost of ownership. Additionally, transition plans reduce local emissions by up to 85% compared to a diesel-only scenario. We find that vehicle rotations with long distances and sufficient idle time are prioritized for electrification, enabling earlier emission reductions and cost savings. This highlights the importance of adopting vehicle scheduling tailored for electric buses, rather than relying on legacy diesel schedules."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"102008","doi":"10.1016/j.trip.2026.102008","author":[{"id":"64135","full_name":"Stumpe, Miriam","first_name":"Miriam","last_name":"Stumpe"},{"first_name":"David","last_name":"Rößler-von Saß","full_name":"Rößler-von Saß, David"},{"last_name":"Kliewer","first_name":"Natalia","full_name":"Kliewer, Natalia"},{"full_name":"Schryen, Guido","first_name":"Guido","last_name":"Schryen","id":"72850"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2590-1982"]},"year":"2026","title":"Impact of vehicle scheduling and strategic transition planning on zero-emission bus systems","intvolume":" 38","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2026-06-13T06:46:16Z","publication_status":"published","citation":{"mla":"Stumpe, Miriam, et al. “Impact of Vehicle Scheduling and Strategic Transition Planning on Zero-Emission Bus Systems.” Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives, vol. 38, 102008, Elsevier BV, 2026, doi:10.1016/j.trip.2026.102008.","bibtex":"@article{Stumpe_Rößler-von Saß_Kliewer_Schryen_2026, title={Impact of vehicle scheduling and strategic transition planning on zero-emission bus systems}, volume={38}, DOI={10.1016/j.trip.2026.102008}, number={102008}, journal={Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Stumpe, Miriam and Rößler-von Saß, David and Kliewer, Natalia and Schryen, Guido}, year={2026} }","ama":"Stumpe M, Rößler-von Saß D, Kliewer N, Schryen G. This study examines the role of\r\nproblem-solving heuristics among 73 sixth-grade students in a German secondary\r\nschool (Gesamtschule). Specifically, we focus on the empirical relationship between\r\nthe occurrence of heuristics, their suitability, and application, as well as their contribution\r\nto problem-solving success. To this end, we developed a heuristic training that\r\nintroduced strategy keys (heuristic aid cards) accompanied by explanatory videos. By\r\nleveraging variations in the successful application of the heuristics between students\r\nand across multiple sessions (73 students in 4 training situations and 3 problems\r\nin a final test), we discover from regression models with student and task-fixed effects\r\nthat a successful use of heuristics (i.e., an heuristic occurred, that heuristic had\r\na high suitability regarding the problem, and it was applied correctly) leads to more\r\nsuccessful mathematical problem solving. Regarding the underlying mechanism, we\r\nfind that all dimensions of heuristic use (occurrence, suitability, and application\r\nof heuristics) are positively related to problem-solving success. When comparing\r\nthe predictive capacity of all three aspects, we identified the correct application of\r\nheuristics as particularly conducive for better problem-solving success. In comparing\r\nthe group of students with high to those with low initial math competence, we find no significant differences in the relationship between heuristic use and problemsolving\r\nsuccess across achievement groups. Our results emphasize the crucial role\r\nof heuristic application in mathematical problem solving, which generally benefits\r\nstudents regardless of their overall math competence."}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s13138-026-00270-6"}],"doi":"https://doi.org/10.1007/s13138-026-00270-6","author":[{"id":"126182","full_name":"Herold-Blasius, Raja","last_name":"Herold-Blasius","first_name":"Raja"},{"full_name":"Kleinschmidt, Hannah","first_name":"Hannah","last_name":"Kleinschmidt"},{"first_name":"Conrad","last_name":"Ziller","full_name":"Ziller, Conrad"}],"year":"2026","title":"Dimensions of Heuristic Use in Mathematical Problem Solving: Evidence from Early Secondary School Students","intvolume":" 47","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2026-06-15T10:13:14Z","oa":"1","citation":{"mla":"Herold-Blasius, Raja, et al. “Dimensions of Heuristic Use in Mathematical Problem Solving: Evidence from Early Secondary School Students.” Journal Für Mathematik-Didaktik, vol. 47, no. 6, 2026, doi:https://doi.org/10.1007/s13138-026-00270-6.","ama":"Herold-Blasius R, Kleinschmidt H, Ziller C. However, the necessary adaptation of the rivet-die combination to the respective material and thickness combinations requires a large number of specific tool sets, which significantly limits the process's flexibility. To overcome these limitations, the versatile self-piercing riveting (V-SPR) was developed, which features enhanced punch actuation in combination with a multi-range-capable rivet . In this context, the concept of a movable die was introduced, which enables an extended process window and adaptable joint formation. Kappe et al. presented initial studies demonstrating the potential of this approach . However, a detailed numerical understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains lacking. This paper presents a numerical analysis of V-SPR with a movable die using a finite element (FE) model. The model includes deformable rivets, sheet metal materials and a kinematically controlled die with adjustable movement. A parameter study was conducted to analyse the influence of die movement on the material flow of the rivet and sheets, as well as joint formation. The simulations were validated using selected experimental data. The goal is to compare the joint geometries achieved with fixed and moving dies and expand the process windows of VSPR. The results demonstrate that the movable-die concept significantly enhances the material flow of both the sheets and the rivet, resulting in a noticeably larger and more reliable interlock than what is achievable with V-SPR using a fixed die. The numerical analyses support the observations reported by Kappe et al. and extend them by providing a quantitative description of how die displacement influences the resulting interlock size. Moreover, the ability to precisely control the die movement makes it possible to join challenging sheet-metal combinations that are difficult to process with conventional setups, particularly in cases involving thicker sheet materials.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-05-13T07:33:27Z","department":[{"_id":"43"},{"_id":"157"}],"type":"journal_article","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1662-9752"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Kaimann, Pia Katharina","first_name":"Pia Katharina","last_name":"Kaimann","id":"44935"},{"full_name":"Bobbert, Mathias","last_name":"Bobbert","first_name":"Mathias","id":"7850"},{"id":"32056","first_name":"Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","last_name":"Meschut","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson"}],"year":"2026","title":"Numerical Analysis of the Influence of a Movable Die on Joint Formation in Versatile Self-Piercing Riveting","intvolume":" 1185","date_updated":"2026-06-15T15:22:59Z","publication_status":"published","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.4028/p-8jkha8","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Kaimann_Bobbert_Meschut_2026, title={Numerical Analysis of the Influence of a Movable Die on Joint Formation in Versatile Self-Piercing Riveting}, volume={1185}, DOI={10.4028/p-8jkha8}, journal={Materials Science Forum}, publisher={Trans Tech Publications, Ltd.}, author={Kaimann, Pia Katharina and Bobbert, Mathias and Meschut, Gerson}, year={2026}, pages={149–160} }","ama":"Kaimann PK, Bobbert M, Meschut G. While recent applications of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) have begun to model such configurational links, their hierarchical nature has received little empirical attention. As this paper demonstrates, theories that posit hierarchical configurations can and should be explored using the two‐step variant of QCA. The paper outlines the potential of the method for the field of creativity and innovation and helps to navigate key modelling decisions. An illustrative study explores the occurrence of informal employee innovation behaviour—workarounds—based on the Ability‐Motivation‐Opportunity (AMO) framework. The results of the two‐step QCA are superior in terms of reduced limited diversity and complexity to those of the conventional one‐step QCA. Overall, the method has considerable potential for empirically capturing the complex, hierarchical interactions inherent in many innovation processes.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Creativity and Innovation Management","citation":{"apa":"Sandfort, L., Hellweg, T.
