Software projects typically include an average of 36 dependencies, with 80% being transitive, meaning they are dependencies of dependencies. Recent research indicates that only 24.9% of these dependencies are required at runtime, and even within those, many program constructs remain unused, adding unnecessary code to the project. This has led to the development of debloating tools that remove unnecessary dependencies and program constructs while balancing precision by eliminating unused constructs and soundness by preserving all required constructs. To systematically evaluate this trade-off, we developed Deblometer, a micro-benchmark consisting of 59 test cases designed to assess support for various Java language features in debloating tools. Each test case includes a manually curated ground truth specifying necessary and bloated classes, methods, and fields, enabling precise measurement of soundness and precision. Using Deblometer, we evaluated three popular Java debloating tools: Deptrim, JShrink, and ProGuard. Our evaluation reveals that all tools remove required program constructs, which results in changed semantics or execution crashes. In particular, the dynamic class loading feature introduces unsoundness in all evaluated tools. Our comparison shows that Deptrim retains more bloated constructs, while ProGuard removes more required constructs. JShrink’s soundness is significantly affected by limited support for annotations, which leads to corrupted debloated artifacts. These soundness issues highlight the need to improve debloating tools to ensure stable and reliable debloated software.","lang":"eng"}],"project":[{"name":"SFB 901; TP T5: Zuverlässige und automatisierte codebasierte Analyse von Open-Source-Abhängigkeiten (Reaktor)","_id":"1072"}],"publication":"Proceedings of the 2025 Workshop on Software Supply Chain Offensive Research and Ecosystem Defenses","citation":{"mla":"Klauke, Jonas, et al. “A Soundness and Precision Benchmark for Java Debloating Tools.” Proceedings of the 2025 Workshop on Software Supply Chain Offensive Research and Ecosystem Defenses, ACM, 2026, doi:10.1145/3733827.3765530.","bibtex":"@inproceedings{Klauke_Ohlmer_Schott_Ponta_Fischer_Bodden_2026, title={A Soundness and Precision Benchmark for Java Debloating Tools}, DOI={10.1145/3733827.3765530}, booktitle={Proceedings of the 2025 Workshop on Software Supply Chain Offensive Research and Ecosystem Defenses}, publisher={ACM}, author={Klauke, Jonas and Ohlmer, Tom and Schott, Stefan and Ponta, Serena Elisa and Fischer, Wolfram and Bodden, Eric}, year={2026} }","ama":"Klauke J, Ohlmer T, Schott S, Ponta SE, Fischer W, Bodden E. Currently, the installation of blind rivet nuts still requires pre-drilling using chip-forming operations. In Meschut and Meyer (Vorlochfreies Setzen von Funktionselementen mittels Fließformen, Europäische Forschungsgesellschaft für Blechverarbeitung e.V. (EFB), Hannover, 2021), a chipless, two-step method for installing blind rivet nuts was developed, in which flow-drilling is the initial step. To eliminate the pre-drilling operation and optimise the joining process of blind rivet nuts, a pilot-hole-free joining method using a flow-drilling process is being pursued. The use of these blind rivet nuts can significantly simplify the joining process by eliminating chip-forming pre-drilling operations. Additionally, the screw-through capability reduces screw variance in automated fastening, optimising the feeding process by minimising the risk of incorrect screw selection. This work aims to develop a single-step process for the installation of a blind rivet nut. To achieve this, it is necessary to design the geometries of both the blind rivet nut and the flow-drill former, which also serves as the mandrel for the blind rivet nut. In addition to the geometries of the tools and functional elements, the flow-drilling process itself has been developed. Special attention is given to the pull-through and the formation of the closing head. To optimise the closing head formation, an iterative optimization process was used. The quality of the pull-through is improved by varying the tip geometries and adjusting the process parameters during flow-drilling.
","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"Discover Mechanical Engineering","issue":"1","doi":"10.1007/s44245-026-00222-x","article_number":"121","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"date_updated":"2026-07-31T07:04:13Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 5","year":"2026","title":"Single-stage setting of blind rivet nuts without pre-drilling","author":[{"id":"84119","first_name":"Yannic","last_name":"Böhm","full_name":"Böhm, Yannic"},{"id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","last_name":"Meschut","first_name":"Gerson"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2731-6564"]},"citation":{"apa":"Böhm, Y., & Meschut, G. A cornerstone of the former is the Pólya--Benz Theorem, classifying a central family of real-root preserving operators on the space of polynomials, as those given by $f(\\partial_z)$ for a Laguerre--Pólya function $f$ and the derivative operator $\\partial_{z}$. We prove that any free (additive) infinitely divisible distribution can be attained as the weak limit of root distributions of Appell polynomials $f_n(\\partial_z)z^n$ as $n\\to\\infty$, for a suitably chosen sequence $f_n$ of Laguerre--Pólya functions.\r\n Such questions on the (global) limiting distributions of real rooted polynomials belong to the active research area of finite free probability. In contrast to its standard tools, our approach allows for non-compactly supported limiting distributions, (barely) complex rooted polynomials and even provides the full microscopic description of the roots. Moreover, we extend our results to differential operators generating free multiplicative infinitely divisible distributions, to the rectangular free convolution, and to $f_n(\\partial_z)p_n$ for real rooted polynomials $p_n$, implying a generalization of the recent connections between the heat flow and free Brownian motion to any free Lévy process.\r\n As corollaries, we identify free stable distributions by choosing $f_n$ to be a fixed rescaled Laguerre--Pólya function, and we prove various convergence results on the zero distributions of Jensen polynomials, e.g. the limiting root distribution of Jensen polynomial of the Riemann $Ξ$-function is given by the Cauchy distribution.","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-08-04T06:07:17Z","external_id":{"arxiv":["2605.31356"]},"department":[{"_id":"94"}],"type":"preprint","author":[{"first_name":"Andrew","last_name":"Campbell","full_name":"Campbell, Andrew"},{"id":"113768","last_name":"Jalowy","orcid":"0000-0001-9624-2685","first_name":"Jonas","full_name":"Jalowy, Jonas"}],"title":"Pólya--Schur problems and free probability","year":"2026","status":"public","date_updated":"2026-08-04T06:07:45Z","_id":"66642","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"user_id":"113768"},{"citation":{"mla":"Jalowy, Jonas, and Hanna Stange. “Box-Covariances of Hyperuniform Point Processes.” Stochastic Processes and Their Applications, vol. 199, 104996, Elsevier BV, 2026, doi:10.1016/j.spa.2026.104996.","bibtex":"@article{Jalowy_Stange_2026, title={Box-covariances of hyperuniform point processes}, volume={199}, DOI={10.1016/j.spa.2026.104996}, number={104996}, journal={Stochastic Processes and their Applications}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Jalowy, Jonas and Stange, Hanna}, year={2026} }","ama":"Jalowy J, Stange H. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid nonlinear optoelectronic device that enhances the detection efficiency of a (001)-oriented GaAs PIN photodiode under telecommunication-wavelength illumination, where absorption is intrinsically limited to two-photon absorption (2PA). Our approach relies on the integration of a transferred, nanopatterned 385 nm-thick (111)-oriented GaAs nanofilm acting as an on-chip nonlinear frequency-conversion layer. Elliptical GaAs nanoresonators are employed to enhance second-harmonic generation (SHG) resonantly, converting incident 1550 nm radiation into above-bandgap photons efficiently absorbed by the underlying diode. Spatially resolved current–voltage measurements reveal a pronounced enhancement of the detector response in regions covered by the nanoantennas. The device exhibits a low dark current, while the metasurface-covered regions show the largest current response under 1560 nm excitation compared to the bare GaAs(100) diode and the unstructured GaAs(111) film. These results establish a direct functional link between dielectric metasurface–based nonlinear frequency conversion and electrical photodetection, providing a viable route toward integrated sub-bandgap detection schemes.
","lang":"eng"}],"issue":"16","publication":"Optics Express","department":[{"_id":"15"}],"type":"journal_article","date_created":"2026-08-06T12:15:59Z","file":[{"date_created":"2026-08-06T12:18:22Z","creator":"cedrikm","content_type":"application/pdf","success":1,"file_id":"66675","date_updated":"2026-08-06T12:18:22Z","relation":"main_file","file_size":2894783,"access_level":"closed","file_name":"oe-34-16-30335.pdf"}],"has_accepted_license":"1","status":"public","volume":34,"ddc":["530"],"user_id":"20798","_id":"66674","publisher":"Optica Publishing Group","project":[{"name":"TRR 142 - Project Area B","_id":"55"},{"_id":"170","name":"TRR 142; TP B09: Effiziente Erzeugung mit maßgeschneiderter optischer Phaselage der zweiten Harmonischen mittels Quasi-gebundener Zustände in GaAs Metaoberflächen"}],"quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Spedt_Meier_Geromel_Mahler_Henksmeier_Reuter_Zentgraf_Meier_2026, title={Hybrid GaAs (111)/GaAs (100) PIN photodiodes for metasurface-assisted nonlinear upconversion detection}, volume={34}, DOI={10.1364/oe.601288}, number={1630335}, journal={Optics Express}, publisher={Optica Publishing Group}, author={Spedt, Vladimir and Meier, Falco and Geromel, René and Mahler, Pascal and Henksmeier, Tobias and Reuter, Dirk and Zentgraf, Thomas and Meier, Cedrik}, year={2026} }","ama":"Spedt V, Meier F, Geromel R, et al. When multiple loading components (e.g., tension, compression, shear) act simultaneously but not in temporal synchrony, out‑of‑phase mixed‑mode conditions occur. Such loadings are typical for automotive chassis parts and mechanically joined sheet‑metal assemblies. For optimized design of structural components, the crack kinking angle that occurs under mixed‑mode loading must be predicted as accurately as possible. At present, however, this is still challenging for out‑of‑phase loading conditions. To investigate the associated crack kinking behavior, a novel Compact‑Tension‑Shear‑Mini (CTSM) specimen was developed, enabling controlled generation of plane out-of-phase mixed-mode loading states. Experiments were performed under various combinations of cyclic and static mode I and mode II load components and compared with the analytical predictions of the Out-of-Phase Mixed-Mode (OMM) concept. The measured crack kinking angles showed very good agreement with the predicted values, with mean deviations of only a few degrees, demonstrating the validity and reproducibility of the approach. Clinching allows different materials to be joined together. A key task in this context is to perform crack growth simulations in the vicinity of clinched joints considering different load and environmental conditions. This requires formulaic descriptions of the fatigue crack growth rate curves for the materials used. For this purpose, fatigue crack growth rate curves for different R-ratios and temperatures are determined experimentally. Generally, these fatigue crack growth rate curves can be described very well using a novel two-part exponential approach for the formulaic description of fatigue crack growth rate curves developed at Applied Mechanics of Paderborn University (FAM). In this case, three parameters are sufficient to describe the fatigue crack growth rate curves. For the material HCT590X, which is frequently used in clinched joints, it is shown as an example how the parameters vary with the R-ratio and the temperature. In addition, at high crack growth rates, a significant rise in the fatigue crack growth rate curve sometimes occurs at both low and high temperatures. To account for this feature, the two-part exponential approach can be expanded to include a third part.
","lang":"eng"}],"date_created":"2026-08-06T10:14:38Z","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"952"},{"_id":"321"}],"type":"journal_article"},{"intvolume":" 1","date_updated":"2026-08-07T11:00:13Z","author":[{"id":"65797","full_name":"Becker, Federica","first_name":"Federica","last_name":"Becker"},{"first_name":"Julia","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6604-5864","last_name":"Bruns","full_name":"Bruns, Julia","id":"72183"}],"conference":{"location":"Helsinki","name":"PME 49"},"title":"Exploring Mathematics Teacher Noticing of Whole-Class Discussions Across Career Stages ","status":"public","year":"2026","volume":1,"user_id":"65797","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"66682","page":"147-154","abstract":[{"text":"Research on teacher noticing highlights differences between novice and expert\r\nteachers, yet little is known about early career and intermediate expertise levels and\r\nhow these expertise-related differences emerge in central teaching tasks and content\r\nareas.
