Currently, the installation of blind rivet nuts still requires pre-drilling using chip-forming operations. In Meschut and Meyer (Vorlochfreies Setzen von Funktionselementen mittels Fließformen, Europäische Forschungsgesellschaft für Blechverarbeitung e.V. (EFB), Hannover, 2021), a chipless, two-step method for installing blind rivet nuts was developed, in which flow-drilling is the initial step. To eliminate the pre-drilling operation and optimise the joining process of blind rivet nuts, a pilot-hole-free joining method using a flow-drilling process is being pursued. The use of these blind rivet nuts can significantly simplify the joining process by eliminating chip-forming pre-drilling operations. Additionally, the screw-through capability reduces screw variance in automated fastening, optimising the feeding process by minimising the risk of incorrect screw selection. This work aims to develop a single-step process for the installation of a blind rivet nut. To achieve this, it is necessary to design the geometries of both the blind rivet nut and the flow-drill former, which also serves as the mandrel for the blind rivet nut. In addition to the geometries of the tools and functional elements, the flow-drilling process itself has been developed. Special attention is given to the pull-through and the formation of the closing head. To optimise the closing head formation, an iterative optimization process was used. The quality of the pull-through is improved by varying the tip geometries and adjusting the process parameters during flow-drilling.
"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"121","doi":"10.1007/s44245-026-00222-x","author":[{"id":"84119","full_name":"Böhm, Yannic","last_name":"Böhm","first_name":"Yannic"},{"id":"32056","full_name":"Meschut, Gerson","last_name":"Meschut","orcid":"0000-0002-2763-1246","first_name":"Gerson"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2731-6564"]},"title":"Single-stage setting of blind rivet nuts without pre-drilling","year":"2026","intvolume":" 5","date_updated":"2026-07-31T07:04:13Z","publication_status":"published","citation":{"bibtex":"@article{Böhm_Meschut_2026, title={Single-stage setting of blind rivet nuts without pre-drilling}, volume={5}, DOI={10.1007/s44245-026-00222-x}, number={1121}, journal={Discover Mechanical Engineering}, publisher={Springer Science and Business Media LLC}, author={Böhm, Yannic and Meschut, Gerson}, year={2026} }","ama":"Böhm Y, Meschut G. A cornerstone of the former is the Pólya--Benz Theorem, classifying a central family of real-root preserving operators on the space of polynomials, as those given by $f(\\partial_z)$ for a Laguerre--Pólya function $f$ and the derivative operator $\\partial_{z}$. We prove that any free (additive) infinitely divisible distribution can be attained as the weak limit of root distributions of Appell polynomials $f_n(\\partial_z)z^n$ as $n\\to\\infty$, for a suitably chosen sequence $f_n$ of Laguerre--Pólya functions.\r\n Such questions on the (global) limiting distributions of real rooted polynomials belong to the active research area of finite free probability. In contrast to its standard tools, our approach allows for non-compactly supported limiting distributions, (barely) complex rooted polynomials and even provides the full microscopic description of the roots. Moreover, we extend our results to differential operators generating free multiplicative infinitely divisible distributions, to the rectangular free convolution, and to $f_n(\\partial_z)p_n$ for real rooted polynomials $p_n$, implying a generalization of the recent connections between the heat flow and free Brownian motion to any free Lévy process.\r\n As corollaries, we identify free stable distributions by choosing $f_n$ to be a fixed rescaled Laguerre--Pólya function, and we prove various convergence results on the zero distributions of Jensen polynomials, e.g. the limiting root distribution of Jensen polynomial of the Riemann $Ξ$-function is given by the Cauchy distribution."}],"date_created":"2026-08-04T06:07:17Z","external_id":{"arxiv":["2605.31356"]},"department":[{"_id":"94"}],"type":"preprint","author":[{"first_name":"Andrew","last_name":"Campbell","full_name":"Campbell, Andrew"},{"id":"113768","orcid":"0000-0001-9624-2685","last_name":"Jalowy","first_name":"Jonas","full_name":"Jalowy, Jonas"}],"status":"public","year":"2026","title":"Pólya--Schur problems and free probability","date_updated":"2026-08-04T06:07:45Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"66642","user_id":"113768"},{"intvolume":" 199","date_updated":"2026-08-04T06:07:59Z","publication_status":"published","author":[{"last_name":"Jalowy","first_name":"Jonas","orcid":"0000-0001-9624-2685","full_name":"Jalowy, Jonas","id":"113768"},{"last_name":"Stange","first_name":"Hanna","full_name":"Stange, Hanna"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["0304-4149"]},"title":"Box-covariances of hyperuniform point processes","year":"2026","status":"public","volume":199,"doi":"10.1016/j.spa.2026.104996","user_id":"113768","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"66641","publisher":"Elsevier BV","article_number":"104996","citation":{"mla":"Jalowy, Jonas, and Hanna Stange. “Box-Covariances of Hyperuniform Point Processes.” Stochastic Processes and Their Applications, vol. 199, 104996, Elsevier BV, 2026, doi:10.1016/j.spa.2026.104996.","bibtex":"@article{Jalowy_Stange_2026, title={Box-covariances of hyperuniform point processes}, volume={199}, DOI={10.1016/j.spa.2026.104996}, number={104996}, journal={Stochastic Processes and their Applications}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Jalowy, Jonas and Stange, Hanna}, year={2026} }","ama":"Jalowy J, Stange H. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid nonlinear optoelectronic device that enhances the detection efficiency of a (001)-oriented GaAs PIN photodiode under telecommunication-wavelength illumination, where absorption is intrinsically limited to two-photon absorption (2PA). Our approach relies on the integration of a transferred, nanopatterned 385 nm-thick (111)-oriented GaAs nanofilm acting as an on-chip nonlinear frequency-conversion layer. Elliptical GaAs nanoresonators are employed to enhance second-harmonic generation (SHG) resonantly, converting incident 1550 nm radiation into above-bandgap photons efficiently absorbed by the underlying diode. Spatially resolved current–voltage measurements reveal a pronounced enhancement of the detector response in regions covered by the nanoantennas. The device exhibits a low dark current, while the metasurface-covered regions show the largest current response under 1560 nm excitation compared to the bare GaAs(100) diode and the unstructured GaAs(111) film. These results establish a direct functional link between dielectric metasurface–based nonlinear frequency conversion and electrical photodetection, providing a viable route toward integrated sub-bandgap detection schemes.
"}],"file":[{"date_created":"2026-08-06T12:18:22Z","creator":"cedrikm","success":1,"content_type":"application/pdf","file_id":"66675","access_level":"closed","file_size":2894783,"file_name":"oe-34-16-30335.pdf","date_updated":"2026-08-06T12:18:22Z","relation":"main_file"}],"date_created":"2026-08-06T12:15:59Z","type":"journal_article","department":[{"_id":"15"}],"year":"2026","title":"Hybrid GaAs (111)/GaAs (100) PIN photodiodes for metasurface-assisted nonlinear upconversion detection","publication_identifier":{"issn":["1094-4087"]},"author":[{"full_name":"Spedt, Vladimir","last_name":"Spedt","first_name":"Vladimir"},{"full_name":"Meier, Falco","last_name":"Meier","first_name":"Falco"},{"full_name":"Geromel, René","last_name":"Geromel","first_name":"René"},{"full_name":"Mahler, Pascal","first_name":"Pascal","last_name":"Mahler"},{"full_name":"Henksmeier, Tobias","last_name":"Henksmeier","first_name":"Tobias","id":"42539"},{"last_name":"Reuter","first_name":"Dirk","full_name":"Reuter, Dirk","id":"37763"},{"id":"30525","last_name":"Zentgraf","orcid":"0000-0002-8662-1101","first_name":"Thomas","full_name":"Zentgraf, Thomas"},{"first_name":"Cedrik","last_name":"Meier","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3787-3572","full_name":"Meier, Cedrik","id":"20798"}],"date_updated":"2026-08-06T12:18:58Z","publication_status":"published","intvolume":" 34","article_type":"original","article_number":"30335","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.1364/oe.601288","file_date_updated":"2026-08-06T12:18:22Z","citation":{"ama":"Spedt V, Meier F, Geromel R, et al. When multiple loading components (e.g., tension, compression, shear) act simultaneously but not in temporal synchrony, out‑of‑phase mixed‑mode conditions occur. Such loadings are typical for automotive chassis parts and mechanically joined sheet‑metal assemblies. For optimized design of structural components, the crack kinking angle that occurs under mixed‑mode loading must be predicted as accurately as possible. At present, however, this is still challenging for out‑of‑phase loading conditions. To investigate the associated crack kinking behavior, a novel Compact‑Tension‑Shear‑Mini (CTSM) specimen was developed, enabling controlled generation of plane out-of-phase mixed-mode loading states. Experiments were performed under various combinations of cyclic and static mode I and mode II load components and compared with the analytical predictions of the Out-of-Phase Mixed-Mode (OMM) concept. The measured crack kinking angles showed very good agreement with the predicted values, with mean deviations of only a few degrees, demonstrating the validity and reproducibility of the approach. These findings confirm the applicability of the OMM concept for describing fatigue‑crack propagation under non‑proportional mixed‑mode loading and provide a basis for fatigue‑life assessment of clinched joints and other cyclic multi-axially loaded components.
"}],"publication":"Discover Mechanical Engineering","issue":"1"},{"citation":{"apa":"Kullmer, G., Krome, S., Weiß, D., Schramm, B., & Ostwald, R. Clinching allows different materials to be joined together. A key task in this context is to perform crack growth simulations in the vicinity of clinched joints considering different load and environmental conditions. This requires formulaic descriptions of the fatigue crack growth rate curves for the materials used. For this purpose, fatigue crack growth rate curves for different R-ratios and temperatures are determined experimentally. Generally, these fatigue crack growth rate curves can be described very well using a novel two-part exponential approach for the formulaic description of fatigue crack growth rate curves developed at Applied Mechanics of Paderborn University (FAM). In this case, three parameters are sufficient to describe the fatigue crack growth rate curves. For the material HCT590X, which is frequently used in clinched joints, it is shown as an example how the parameters vary with the R-ratio and the temperature. In addition, at high crack growth rates, a significant rise in the fatigue crack growth rate curve sometimes occurs at both low and high temperatures. To account for this feature, the two-part exponential approach can be expanded to include a third part.
"}],"date_created":"2026-08-06T10:14:38Z","department":[{"_id":"9"},{"_id":"952"},{"_id":"321"}],"type":"journal_article","author":[{"first_name":"Gunter","last_name":"Kullmer","full_name":"Kullmer, Gunter","id":"291"},{"first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Krome","full_name":"Krome, Sven","id":"57245"},{"id":"45673","full_name":"Weiß, Deborah","first_name":"Deborah","last_name":"Weiß"},{"first_name":"Britta","last_name":"Schramm","full_name":"Schramm, Britta","id":"4668"},{"id":"106876","last_name":"Ostwald","first_name":"Richard","orcid":"0000-0003-2147-8444","full_name":"Ostwald, Richard"}],"publication_identifier":{"issn":["2075-4701"]},"year":"2026","title":"Influence of the R-Ratio and the Temperature on the Coefficients of a Novel Exponential Approach for the Formulaic Description of Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Curves","intvolume":" 16","publication_status":"published","date_updated":"2026-08-06T10:17:54Z","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"article_number":"835","doi":"10.3390/met16080835"},{"abstract":[{"lang":"eng","text":"Research on teacher noticing highlights differences between novice and expert\r\nteachers, yet little is known about early career and intermediate expertise levels and\r\nhow these expertise-related differences emerge in central teaching tasks and content\r\nareas. Experiences reside in minds of employees and are not systematically documented but could have a significant influence on sustainable product engineering. Existing approaches do not offer sufficient support for harnessing technical tacit knowledge regarding sustainable product engineering. In this paper a three-step method is presented: The method contains knowledge acquisition, requirements extraction und requirements validation for quality assurance. Acquisition is performed by support artifacts like interview guidelines. Extraction is supported by Artificial Intelligence, converting statements into requirements. These requirements are validated using a specific questionnaire. The developed approach is applied in a funded project of the European Union (EU) with automotive industry partners. The method supports product engineers to collect tacit knowledge from experienced employees, transform unsystematic knowledge into standardized technical requirements and validate them. Application of this method enables creation of validated requirements that can be applied throughout the company and are not exclusively dependent on a single employee."}],"series_title":"International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2639","author":[{"id":"98210","first_name":"Johanna","last_name":"Mansheim","full_name":"Mansheim, Johanna"},{"id":"47565","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris","last_name":"Gräßler","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","first_name":"Iris"},{"first_name":"Jan Niklas","last_name":"Pfeifer","full_name":"Pfeifer, Jan Niklas","id":"62841"}],"title":"Harnessing tacit Knowledge from Sustainable Product Engineering through Artificial Intelligence","year":"2026","intvolume":" 1","date_updated":"2026-08-13T09:02:56Z","publication_status":"published"},{"date_updated":"2026-08-13T08:18:14Z","author":[{"id":"47565","first_name":"Iris","orcid":"0000-0001-5765-971X","last_name":"Gräßler","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"},{"id":"74512","first_name":"Simon","last_name":"Aydin","full_name":"Aydin, Simon"},{"id":"67999","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0602-9923","first_name":"Sven","last_name":"Rarbach","full_name":"Rarbach, Sven"}],"title":"Systematic review of engineering simulation models for life cycle assessment","year":"2026","doi":"10.17619/UNIPB/1-2637","language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"main_file_link":[{"open_access":"1","url":"https://digital.ub.uni-paderborn.de/hs/download/pdf/8359171"}],"abstract":[{"text":"Manufacturing companies increasingly integrate the strive towards sustainability into product engineering to reduce resource consumption and environmental impacts. A substantial share of a product’s environmental performance is determined during engineering. Early assessments rely on generic data, which is gradually replaced by more concrete simulation and primary data as product maturity increases. The effective use of engineering simulation models for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) therefore remains a central challenge under heterogeneous, distributed and rapidly evolving data. This article presents a systematic review of product engineering approaches for integrating simulation models into LCA. A seven-step research approach is applied to identify, categorize and evaluate existing approaches across CAx tools. Relevant simulation parameters for sustainability assessment, including material properties, process descriptors, consumables and waste streams, are identified and analyzed. Based on identified data characteristics, the potential of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence methods for LCA data preparation is assessed. A conceptual knowledge-graph-based decision support approach is derived to enable structured integration, traceability and reuse of simulation data for sustainability assessment. The approach is evaluated using criteria from literature. Structured integration of simulation data improves early-stage data quality and supports decision-making in sustainable product engineering.","lang":"eng"}],"publication":"1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University","department":[{"_id":"152"}],"type":"conference","date_created":"2026-07-16T09:41:28Z","conference":{"location":"Paderborn","start_date":"20260324","name":"International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering 1. 2026 Paderborn","end_date":"20260326"},"status":"public","editor":[{"last_name":"Gräßler","first_name":"Iris","full_name":"Gräßler, Iris"}],"user_id":"67999","publisher":"Universitätsbibliothek","_id":"66514","quality_controlled":"1","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, Iris, et al. “Systematic Review of Engineering Simulation Models for Life Cycle Assessment.” 1st International Symposium: March 24 – 26, 2026, Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn University, edited by Iris Gräßler, Universitätsbibliothek, 2026, doi:10.17619/UNIPB/1-2637.","ama":"Gräßler I, Aydin S, Rarbach S. The intention of reassembling products and their part simplies that inspection and sorting need to be integrated with value-conserving objectives. Further, disassembly and reassembly require higher competence levels of workforce than assembly. To provide the required information during engineering, a metadata model (MDM) is required that links established product models to capability models. Since processes to be carried out for realizing a product largely determine required employees’ capabilities, the proposed approach uses the ADR process domain to connect product and capability domains. The research is based on a systematic literature analysis to identify existing approaches regarding MDMs of ADR processes. Based on the results, an integrative MDM is developed that answers defined competence questions. The model enables queries which support engineers by feedback on which skills are required for a product. This builds up a basis to check whether required skills are available in the manufacturing company, either early in product engineering or later in ADR planning.","lang":"eng"}],"publisher":"Universitätsbibliothek","_id":"66683","editor":[{"full_name":"Graessler, Iris","last_name":"Graessler","first_name":"Iris"}],"user_id":"76202","conference":{"location":"Paderborn","start_date":"25"},"status":"public","place":"Paderborn","oa":"1","citation":{"mla":"Gräßler, I., et al. “Enabling Extreme Data by Using DS/AI Approaches.” 1st International Symposium on Hybrid Intelligence in Product and Production Engineering, edited by Iris Graessler, Universitätsbibliothek, 2026, doi:10.17619/UNIPB/1-2640.","ama":"Gräßler I, Hesse T, Pottebaum J.
