The prices are regulated and providers compete in location and quality. We show that whereas opening a public hospital market typically raises quality, the private provider strategically locates towards the corner of the market to avoid costly quality competition. Social welfare depends on the size of the regulator's budget and on the altruism of the public provider. If the budget is large, high quality results and welfare is highest in a duopoly whenever entry is optimal. If the budget is small, quality levels in a duopoly mirror the quality level in a monopoly. It can be optimal for the regulator not to use the full budget. AU - Hehenkamp, Burkhard AU - Kaarbøe, Odvar M. Self-adaptive user interfaces (SAUIs) have been promoted as a solution for context variability due to their ability to automatically adapt to the context-of-use at runtime. The development of SAUIs is a challenging and complex task as additional aspects like context management and UI adaptation have to be covered. In classical model-driven UI development approaches, these aspects are not fully integrated and hence introduce additional complexity as they represent crosscutting concerns. In this paper, we present an integrated model-driven development approach where a classical model-driven development of UIs is coupled with a model-driven development of context-of-use and UI adaptation rules. We base our approach on the core UI modeling language IFML and introduce new modeling languages for context-of-use (ContextML) and UI adaptation rules (AdaptML). The generated UI code, based on the IFML model, is coupled with the context and adaptation services, generated from the ContextML and AdaptMLmodel, respectively. The integration of the generated artifacts, namely UI code, context, and adaptation services in an overall rule-based execution environment, enables runtime UI adaptation. The benefit of our approach is demonstrated by two case studies, showing the development of SAUIs for different application scenarios and a usability study which has been conducted to analyze end-user satisfaction of SAUIs. As the use of intuition in business has become more widely accepted, companies struggle to understand how to use this additional resource efficiently, while corporate trainers and university educators lack tools to develop it as a skill. This truly international Handbook provides relevant answers with: • chapters by academics and practitioners, written in a concise, digestible format to make it accessible to non-academic readers • empirical studies from multiple industry/service sectors that demonstrate an integrated use of intuition and analysis in decision making • studies from industry and education that demonstrate how to develop intuition, including a ground-breaking research in problem solving • non-Western perspectives illustrated on case studies from Japan and China • use of language protocols/methods to bring intuition into our awareness • new research into group/collective intuition (based on language analysis and quantum physics) • research related to sensing and sense making. Due to its focus on bridging theory and practice, the Handbook is of value not only to academics and organizational researchers but also to industry professionals, corporate trainers and university educators who search for answers on how to incorporate intuition into a common skill set. Accessible in style, it will also appeal to educated business readers. Additionally, we prove that this equality is stable under small perturbations of the Riemannian metric and simultaneous small perturbations of the geodesic vector field within the class of contact vector fields. For more general perturbations we get bounds on the multiplicity of the resonance zero on all one-forms in terms of the first and zeroth Betti numbers. Furthermore, we identify for hyperbolic manifolds further resonance spaces whose multiplicities are given by higher Betti numbers. Research shows that examining outlays by individual BI&A artifact (e.g. reports, analytics) is necessary, but introduction in practice is cumbersome and adoption is slow. BI&A service-oriented cost allocation (BIASOCA) represents an improvement to this situation. This approach enables to render the BI&A cost pool accountable and improves cost transparency, which leads to a higher BI&A penetration of economically viable applications in organizations. Against this background, this paper aims at designing and implementing BIASOCA in a medium-sized company. To record organizational impact and increase customer acceptance, this study is carried out as action design research (ADR). Our findings indicate improvements in BI&A management from working with consumers to locate cost savings and drivers. After invoicing, consumers’ BI&A awareness increased, releasing resources while also making a better understanding of BIASOCA necessary. The interplay between gender, age, relationship quality, and frequency of contact on value similarity was analyzed. A total of 600 adult German children (53.8% women) and their parents took part in a questionnaire study. Value orientation was measured with a short version of Schwartz’s Portrait Values Questionnaire, and relationship quality with the Network of Relationships Inventory (Furman & Buhrmeister, 1992).Value similarity was higher in mother–daughter dyads compared to mother–son dyads, but in the other dyads, no significant differences were found. Regarding relationship quality, verbal intimacy was not related to value similarity. Parental satisfaction was associated with value similarity in the father–child dyads. Satisfaction, as perceived by adult children, was linked to value similarity in mother–child and father–son dyads. Furthermore, the frequency of contact related to value similarity between mothers and sons. AU - Hoellger, Christian AU - Sommer, Sabrina AU - Albert, Isabelle AU - Buhl, Heike M. Exact results can only be achieved when a single specimen is used in the identification process, which typically is prone to the problem of low sensitivities to certain material parameters and thus high uncertainties. Therefore, a custom electrode topology for increased sensitivity is proposed for a piezoceramic disc. The thereupon conducted measurements of the electric impedance can be used as a starting point for an inverse approach where an equivalent simulation model is used to identify fitting material parameters. An optimisation strategy based on a preliminary sensitivity analysis is presented that leads to a good agreement between measurement and simulation. Furthermore, the proposed measurement procedure is able to evaluate the quality of the simulation model. Hence, different frequency-dependent damping models are presented and evaluated. [J. Algebra 348 (2011) 446–461] provide an algorithm for finding a complete system of primitive orthogonal idempotents for CM, where M is any finite R-trivial monoid. Their method relies on a technical result stating that R-trivial monoid are equivalent to so-called weakly ordered monoids. We provide an alternative algorithm, based only on the simple observation that an R-trivial monoid may be realized by upper triangular matrices. This approach is inspired by results in the field of coupled cell network dynamical systems, where L-trivial monoids (the opposite notion) correspond to so-called feed-forward networks. We first show that our algorithm works for ZM, after which we prove that it also works for RM where R is an arbitrary ring with a known complete system of primitive orthogonal idempotents. In particular, our algorithm works if R is any field. In this respect our result constitutes a considerable generalization of the results in Berg et al. [J. Algebra 348 (2011) 446–461]. Moreover, the system of idempotents for RM is obtained from the one our algorithm yields for ZM in a straightforward manner. In other words, for any finite R-trivial monoid M our algorithm only has to be performed for ZM, after which a system of idempotents follows for any ring with a given system of idempotents. We show that many such properties can be encoded by means of quiver representations. These properties include classical symmetry, hidden symmetry, and feedforward structure, as well as subnetwork and quotient relations in network dynamical systems. A quiver equivariant dynamical system consists of a collection of dynamical systems with maps between them that send solutions to solutions. We prove that such quiver structures are preserved under Lyapunov--Schmidt reduction, center manifold reduction, and normal form reduction. AU - Nijholt, Eddie AU - Rink, Bob W. This generalizes previous work of D ̈oring and Kyprianou, who considered L ́evy processes having a local time, leaving the general case as an open problem. It turns out, that the criterium in the general situation simplifies significantly in the situation, where the process has a local time, but we also demonstrate that in general our cri- terium can not be reduced. Relations of this kind occur quite naturally in various domains, such as preference modeling and preference learning. For example, Q(i,j) could be the fraction of voters in a population who prefer candidate i to candidate j. In the literature, various attempts have been made at generalizing the notion of transitivity to reciprocal relations. In this paper, we compare three important frameworks of generalized transitivity: g-stochastic transitivity, T-transitivity, and cycle-transitivity. To this end, we introduce E-transitivity as an even more general notion. We also use this framework to extend an existing hierarchy of different types of transitivity. As an illustration, we study transitivity properties of probabilities of pairwise preferences, which are induced as marginals of an underlying probability distribution on rankings (strict total orders) of a set of alternatives. In particular, we analyze the interesting case of the so-called Babington Smith model, a parametric family of distributions of that kind. So far, less attention has been paid to teaching Open Science in bachelor’s degrees or in qualitative methods. Therefore, the aim of this article is to use a seminar example to explore what Open Science practices can be taught in qualitative research and how digital tools can be involved. The seminar focused on the following practices: Open data practices, the practice of using the free and open source tool “Collaborative online Interpretation, the practice of participating, cooperating, collaborating and contributing through participatory technologies and in social (based) networks. To learn Open Science practices, the students were involved in a qualitative research project about “Use of digital technologies for the study and habitus of students”. The study shows the practices of Open Data are easy to teach, whereas the use of free and open source tools and participatory technologies for collaboration, participation, cooperation and contribution is more difficult. In addition, a cultural shift would have to take place within German universities to promote Open Science practices in general. A reflection of a qualitative research project-based seminar VL - 36 ER - TY - JOUR AB - Abstract Purpose While observational studies revealed inverse associations between serum vitamin D levels [25(OH)D] and depression, randomized controlled trials (RCT) in children and adolescents are lacking. This RCT examined the effect of an untreated vitamin D deficiency compared to an immediate vitamin D3 supplementation on depression scores in children and adolescents during standard day and in-patient psychiatric treatment. Methods Patients with vitamin D deficiency [25(OH)D ≤ 30 nmol/l] and at least mild depression [Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) > 13] (n = 113) were 1:1 randomized into verum (VG; 2640 IU vitamin D3/d) or placebo group (PG) in a double-blind manner. During the intervention period of 28 days, both groups additionally received treatment as usual. BDI-II scores were assessed as primary outcome, DISYPS-II (Diagnostic System for Mental Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence, Self- and Parent Rating) and serum total 25(OH)D were secondary outcomes. Results At admission, 49.3% of the screened patients (n = 280) had vitamin D deficiency. Although the intervention led to a higher increase of 25(OH)D levels in the VG than in the PG (treatment difference: + 14 ng/ml; 95% CI 4.86–23.77; p = 0.003), the change in BDI-II scores did not differ (+ 1.3; 95% CI − 2.22 to 4.81; p = 0.466). In contrast, DISYPS parental ratings revealed pronounced improvements of depressive symptoms in the VG (− 0.68; 95% CI − 1.23 to − 0.13; p = 0.016). Conclusion Whereas this study failed to show a vitamin D supplementation effect on self-rated depression in adolescent in- or daycare patients, parents reported less depressive symptoms in VG at the end of our study. Future trials should consider clinician-rated depressive symptoms as primary outcome. Whey protein plus potassium bicarbonate diet-supplementation (NUTR) could attenuate this effect by improving oxidative metabolism. We evaluated the impact of 21-day BR and NUTR on fatigue resistance of plantar flexor muscles (PF) during repeated shortening contractions, and whether any change was related to altered energy metabolism and muscle oxygenation. Methods Ten healthy men received a standardized isocaloric diet with (n = 5) or without (n = 5) NUTR. Eight bouts of 24 concentric plantar flexions (30 s each bout) with 20 s rest between bouts were employed. PF muscle size was assessed by means of peripheral quantitative computed tomography. PF muscle volume was assessed with magnetic resonance imaging. PF muscle force, contraction velocity, power and surface electromyogram signals were recorded during each contraction, as well as energy metabolism (31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and oxygenation (near-infrared spectroscopy). Cardiopulmonary parameters were measured during an incremental cycle exercise test. Results BR caused 10–15% loss of PF volume that was partly recovered 3 days after re-ambulation, as a consequence of fluid redistribution. Unexpectedly, PF fatigue resistance was not affected by BR or NUTR. BR induced a shift in muscle metabolism toward glycolysis and some signs of impaired muscle oxygen extraction. NUTR did not attenuate the BR-induced-shift in energy metabolism. Conclusions Twenty-one days’ BR did not impair PF fatigue resistance, but the shift to glycolytic metabolism and indications of impaired oxygen extraction may be early signs of developing reduced muscle fatigue resistance. We aimed to detect state related metabolic alterations during inpatient admission and upon short- and long-term weight regain. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that metabolite concentrations adapt to those of healthy controls (HC) after long-term weight regain. Thirty-five female adolescents with AN and 25 female HC were recruited. Based on a targeted approach 187 metabolite concentrations were detected at inpatient admission (T0), after short-term weight recovery (T1; half of target-weight) and close to target weight (T2). Pattern hunter and time course analysis were performed. The highest number of significant differences in metabolite concentrations (N = 32) were observed between HC and T1. According to the detected main pattern, metabolite concentrations at T2 became more similar to those of HC. The course of single metabolite concentrations (e.g., glutamic acid) revealed different metabolic subtypes within the study sample. Patients with AN after short-term weight regain are in a greater “metabolic imbalance” than at starvation. After long-term weight regain, patients reach a metabolite profile similar to HC. Our results might be confounded by different metabolic subtypes of patients with AN.
