AB - When it comes to mastering the digital world, the education system is more and more facing the task of making students competent and self-determined agents when interacting with digital artefacts. This task often falls to computing education. In the traditional fields of computing education, a plethora of models, guidelines, and principles exist, which help scholars and teachers identify what the relevant aspects are and which of them one should cover in the classroom. When it comes to explaining the world of digital artefacts, however, there is hardly any such guiding model. The ARIadne model introduced in this paper provides a means of explanation and exploration of digital artefacts which help teachers and students to do a subject analysis of digital artefacts by scrutinizing them from several perspectives. Instead of artificially separating aspects which target the same phenomena within different areas of education (like computing, ICT or media education), the model integrates technological aspects of digital artefacts and the relevant societal discourses of their usage, their impacts and the reasons behind their development into a coherent explanation model.

AB - Polymer composites represent the industry standard in injection molding for the production
of plastic components with increased requirements in terms of heat resistance and stiffness. In the
field of laser sintering (LS), these materials are less common so far. In order to extend the available
material variety for the LS process, new ceramic-filled Polyamide 613 powders are investigated
within the scope of this work. Here, the resulting properties from two different powder production
methods are compared. One filled powder is produced by dry blending and the other powder with
the same filler and filling ratio is produced by encapsulating the filler particles inside the polymer
particles within the dissolution-precipitation process. It was found that encapsulating the filler
particles can provide certain benefits for the processability, for example an improved powder
flowability or better filler dispersion. However, encapsulating the filler also alters the thermal
properties of the precipitated powder.

AB - Effect chain modelling is a method for creating information
models for impact analyses of changes in system elements. For
the estimation of change propagation, dependencies between
requirements must be detected. The high number of require-
ment dependencies in the engineering of complex technical
systems results in the need for automation. In a study, it was
shown that transformer models (BERT) are suitable for the
automated dependency analysis of requirements. However,
there are currently deficits in the applicability of the models
for different projects without an extensive and heterogeneous
training database. This paper investigates how active learning
can be used to train BERT models (active-BERT) in order to
increase the performance of the models for classifying requi-
rement dependencies of projects with heterogeneous require-
ments. The results show that the performance of the models
increases significantly through active learning. Through active-
BERT, engineers are enabled to model effect chains efficiently
and to handle requirement changes effectively.

AB - The numerical solution of an ordinary differential equation can be interpreted as the exact solution of a nearby modified equation. Investigating the behaviour of numerical solutions by analysing the modified equation is known as backward error analysis. If the original and modified equation share structural properties, then the exact and approximate solution share geometric features such as the existence of conserved quantities. Conjugate symplectic methods preserve a modified symplectic form and a modified Hamiltonian when applied to a Hamiltonian system. We show how a blended version of variational and symplectic techniques can be used to compute modified symplectic and Hamiltonian structures. In contrast to other approaches, our backward error analysis method does not rely on an ansatz but computes the structures systematically, provided that a variational formulation of the method is known. The technique is illustrated on the example of symmetric linear multistep methods with matrix coefficients.

AB - The non-orthogonal local submatrix method applied to electronic structure–based molecular dynamics simulations is shown to exceed 1.1 EFLOP/s in FP16/FP32-mixed floating-point arithmetic when using 4400 NVIDIA A100 GPUs of the Perlmutter system. This is enabled by a modification of the original method that pushes the sustained fraction of the peak performance to about 80%. Example calculations are performed for SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins with up to 83 million atoms.

AB - The Saharan desert ant Cataglyphis bombycina is densely covered with shiny silver setae (hair-like structures). Their appearance was explained by geometric optics and total internal reflection. The setae also increase the emissivity of the ant, as they form an effective medium. This work provides additional data on microstructural details of the setae that are used to simulate the scattering of an individual seta to explain their influence on the optical properties. This is achieved by characterization of their structure using light microscopy and scanning/transmission electron microscopy. How the microstructural features influence scattering is investigated wave-optically within the limits of finite-difference time-domain simulations from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared spectral range to elucidate the optical effects beyond ray optics and effective medium theory. The results show that Mie scattering plays an important role in protecting the ant from solar radiation and could be relevant for its thermal tolerance.

AB - One of the main challenges for next generation automotive radars is the improvement of angular resolution to a sub-degree level. In this context, wide aperture automotive radars of 1m length or more and resolution close to 0.1° in azimuth and 0.5° in elevation could be beneficial. To enable coherent processing of arrays with such large aperture, prior (i.e offline) and online calibration are necessary: channel imbalances (gains and phases) and three dimensional coordinates of transmit and receive elements need to be determined. We propose a calibration strategy based on alternating steps between the two subtasks of i) channel imbalance estimation with ‘known’ array positions, by applying a singular value decomposition to the resulting tensor calculus problem; and ii) antenna position estimation with ’known’ channel imbalances, by numerically maximizing the Bayesian posterior probability; in both cases operating on range/Doppler snapshots of disjoint targets (with potentially unknown locations). Simulation studies based on the parameters of a MIMO 8x6 linear sparse array show promising results as long as the initial position errors do not exceed half a wavelength (2mm), beyond which we observe strong effects of ambiguity. Experimental results with real measurements show that after calibration in laboratory conditions, our MIMO 8x6 demonstrator with 50cm aperture is able to resolve two targets at the same range with angular separation at least as close as 0.4°.

AB - AbstractThe use of static analysis security testing (SAST) tools has been increasing in recent years. However, previous studies have shown that, when shipped to end users such as development or security teams, the findings of these tools are often unsatisfying. Users report high numbers of false positives or long analysis times, making the tools unusable in the daily workflow. To address this, SAST tool creators provide a wide range of configuration options, such as customization of rules through domain-specific languages or specification of the application-specific analysis scope. In this paper, we study the configuration space of selected existing SAST tools when used within the integrated development environment (IDE). We focus on the configuration options that impact three dimensions, for which a trade-off is unavoidable, i.e., precision, recall, and analysis runtime. We perform a between-subjects user study with 40 users from multiple development and security teams - to our knowledge, the largest population for this kind of user study in the software engineering community. The results show that users who configure SAST tools are more effective in resolving security vulnerabilities detected by the tools than those using the default configuration. Based on post-study interviews, we identify common strategies that users have while configuring the SAST tools to provide further insights for tool creators. Finally, an evaluation of the configuration options of two commercial SAST tools, Fortify and CheckMarx, reveals that a quarter of the users do not understand the configuration options provided. The configuration options that are found most useful relate to the analysis scope.
