AB - Objective: It is unclear whether and to what extent COVID-19 infection poses health risks and a chronic impairment of performance in athletes. Identification of individual health risk is an important decision-making basis for managing the pandemic risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 in sports and return to play (RTP).Methods: This study aims 1) to analyze the longitudinal rate of seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in German athletes, 2) to assess health-related consequences in athletes infected with SARS-CoV-2, and 3) to reveal effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in general and of a cleared SARS-CoV-2 infection on exercise performance. CoSmo-S is a prospective observational multicenter study establishing two cohorts: 1) athletes diagnosed positive for COVID-19 (cohort 1) and 2) federal squad athletes who perform their annual sports medical preparticipation screening (cohort 2). Comprehensive diagnostics including physical examination, laboratory blood analyses and blood biobanking, resting and exercise electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography, spirometry and exercise testing added by questionnaires are conducted at baseline and follow-up.Results and Conclusion: We expect that the results obtained, will allow us to formulate recommendations regarding RTP on a more evidence-based level.

AB - Physical self-concept (PSC) and motor competencies are important factors in view of the development of a physically active lifestyle. There are research gaps regarding longitudinal studies of these relationships. This article presents findings of a longitudinal study (n = 200; 58% girls, M = 8.84 ± 0.63 years) at three primary schools. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between actual motor competencies (AMC) and perceived motor competencies (PMC) and PSC. Therefore, manifest path models in cross-lagged design were performed. Results show that correlations between PMC and AMC increased over time and were stronger in object control than in locomotor. Effects of AMC on PSC were more strongly mediated by PMC in object control than in locomotor. To promote physical activity, developing strategies should be aimed at the acquisition of AMC, particularly in object control, and PMC, especially in locomotor, during childhood.

AB - AbstractThis article presents an overview of characteristics of Citizen Social Science (CSS) in Germany. CSS is defined as scientific research in the humanities and social sciences, carried out in cooperation between professional and non-professional researchers. The study draws on an online survey and semi-structured interviews with project coordinators and co-researchers. It finds that participatory research activities in the humanities and social sciences are very diverse in their disciplinary traditions and organisational settings. Key features of CSS activities initiated inside as well as outside academic institutions are analysed to understand patterns of participation and cooperation. The results show that CSS activities are frequently realised in heterogeneous consortia of academic and non-academic partners. These consortia influence interactions between professional and non-professional researchers. To investigate these observations further, the article extends the analytical gaze from participation of individual volunteers to various forms of cooperation in consortia. This shift in attention brings to sight additional actors and activities that are usually not, or only marginally, considered in discussions about C(S)S. Staff of civil society organisations, municipalities, schools or cross-sectoral initiatives as well as university students are involved in making CSS work. In addition to research tasks, CSS rests on science communication, project management and intermediation activities. This extended perspective captures more diverse constellations of knowledge production in participatory research in the social sciences and humanities than the common focus on participation. In this way, the article aims to lay the groundwork for understanding the functioning of CSS beyond aspects described by the concept of invited and uninvited participation. It shows that CSS activities are not limited to capacitating lay people for participation in science. A more adequate description is that such projects are concerned with facilitating cooperation with co-researchers and other partners in consortia inside and outside of academia. On this basis, the article introduces the notion of cooperation capacity as a heuristic device to propose new prompts for research on CSS as well as for supporting CSS practice.

AB - To achieve optimum bond results at ultrasonic bonding thick copper wire on sensitive components is quite challenging.
Bearing in mind that high normal force and ultrasonic power are needed for bond quality but as well increase stress and finally failure risk of the substrate, methods should be found to achieve high bond quality even at lower bond parameters. Therefore, bond experiments with different bond tool grove geometries have been conducted for copper and aluminum wire on direct copper bonded (DCB) substrates to investigate the impact of geometric parameters on bond formation and bond quality. The wire material depending impact of geometry changes on the bond formation and deformation was quantified. Additionally, a bonding parameter design of experiments (DOE) has been conducted for the reference and the most promising groove geometry. Higher shear values were achieved at reduced vertical tool displacement for most bonding parameter combinations, compared to the reference tool. This behavior allows for reducing ultrasonic power to obtain equal shear values; consequently, mechanical stresses in the interface decrease. This could potentially reduce the risk of chip damage and thus yield loss.

AB - ue to the constantly growing energy demand of power electronics and the need to reduce the size of electronic components like power modules for e-mobility, new challenges arise for ultrasonic wire bonding: the electrical connection must endure higher thermal and mechanical stress while the connecting partners become more sensitive or require more energy to get bonded. Past investigations have shown already that multi-dimensional ultrasonic bonding and welding yield the same or even better bond quality while reducing the load on the components. This contribution is intended to show whether multidi-mensional thick wire bonding is a promising concept to over-come the new challenges. The focus is on experimental investi-gations of different bond tool trajectories in ultrasonic wire bonding of aluminum and copper wire on DCB's and chips. The bond quality is analyzed by shear tests, microsections and, in the case of aluminum bonding, by a new machine learning method for an objective automated evaluation of the sheared area.

AB - PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to revisit the disastrous DaimlerChrysler AG takeover episode from 1998 to 2007 in order to arrive at a more comprehensive explanation of this and other merger and takeover failures based on institutional theory.Design/methodology/approachThe case study is based on various secondary sources of information and on the insights that one of the authors gained from working for 14 years in various positions for Daimler-Benz and DaimlerChrysler.FindingsDaimlerChrysler failed because top management made mistakes in trying to globalize the company. They were unable to realize possible synergies between the two companies, which brought complementary resources into the merger. Furthermore, they did not account for the institutional embeddedness of strategies when they adopted lean production globally, diffused the production system developed in Germany to other parts of the world and tried to implement a global stock enlisted in New York and Frankfurt. The underlying theoretical framework is relevant for other merger and acquisition cases. It features institutional embeddedness, path dependency and institutional arbitrage.Originality/valueThe paper develops an institutional perspective on DaimlerChrysler and on cross-border merger and acquisition failure more generally. The perspective is organized around the varieties-of-capitalism approach. This contribution is important because there is increasing dissatisfaction with the dominant explanation of cross-border merger and acquisition failure, which is based on the allegedly failed management of culture “clashes.”

AB - The Quantum Singular Value Transformation (QSVT) is a recent technique that
gives a unified framework to describe most quantum algorithms discovered so
far, and may lead to the development of novel quantum algorithms. In this paper
we investigate the hardness of classically simulating the QSVT. A recent result
by Chia, Gily\'en, Li, Lin, Tang and Wang (STOC 2020) showed that the QSVT can
be efficiently "dequantized" for low-rank matrices, and discussed its
implication to quantum machine learning. In this work, motivated by
establishing the superiority of quantum algorithms for quantum chemistry and
making progress on the quantum PCP conjecture, we focus on the other main class
of matrices considered in applications of the QSVT, sparse matrices.
We first show how to efficiently "dequantize", with arbitrarily small
constant precision, the QSVT associated with a low-degree polynomial. We apply
this technique to design classical algorithms that estimate, with constant
precision, the singular values of a sparse matrix. We show in particular that a
central computational problem considered by quantum algorithms for quantum
chemistry (estimating the ground state energy of a local Hamiltonian when
given, as an additional input, a state sufficiently close to the ground state)
can be solved efficiently with constant precision on a classical computer. As a
complementary result, we prove that with inverse-polynomial precision, the same
problem becomes BQP-complete. This gives theoretical evidence for the
superiority of quantum algorithms for chemistry, and strongly suggests that
said superiority stems from the improved precision achievable in the quantum
setting. We also discuss how this dequantization technique may help make
progress on the central quantum PCP conjecture.

AB - Due to failures or even the absence of an electricity grid, microgrid systems are becoming popular solutions for electrifying African rural communities. However, they are heavily stressed and complex to control due to their intermittency and demand growth. Demand side management (DSM) serves as an option to increase the level of flexibility on the demand side by scheduling users’ consumption patterns profiles in response to supply. This paper proposes a demand-side management strategy based on load shifting and peak clipping. The proposed approach was modelled in a MATLAB/Simulink R2021a environment and was optimized using the artificial neural network (ANN) algorithm. Simulations were carried out to test the model’s efficacy in a stand-alone PV-battery microgrid in East Africa. The proposed algorithm reduces the peak demand, smoothing the load profile to the desired level, and improves the system’s peak to average ratio (PAR). The presence of deferrable loads has been considered to bring more flexible demand-side management. Results promise decreases in peak demand and peak to average ratio of about 31.2% and 7.5% through peak clipping. In addition, load shifting promises more flexibility to customers.

AB - Recent analyses by polarization resolved second-harmonic (SH) microscopy have demonstrated that ferroelectric (FE) domain walls (DWs) can possess non-Ising wall characteristics and topological nature. These analyses rely on locally analyzing the properties, directionality, and magnitude of the second-order nonlinear tensor. However, when inspecting FE DWs with SH microscopy, a manifold of different effects may contribute to the observed signal difference between domains and DWs, i.e., far-field interference, Čerenkov-type phase-matching (CSHG), and changes in the aforementioned local nonlinear optical properties. They all might be present at the same time and, therefore, require careful interpretation and separation. In this work, we demonstrate how the particularly strong Čerenkov-type contrast can selectively be blocked using dark- and bright-field SH microscopy. Based on this approach, we show that other contrast mechanisms emerge that were previously overlayed by CSHG but can now be readily selected through the appropriate experimental geometry. Using the methods presented, we show that the strength of the CSHG contrast compared to the other mechanisms is approximately 22 times higher. This work lays the foundation for the in-depth analysis of FE DW topologies by SH microscopy.
