AB - This article presents the potential-dependent adsorption of two proteins, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LYZ), on Ti6Al4V alloy at pH 7.4 and 37 °C. The adsorption process was studied on an electropolished alloy under cathodic and anodic overpotentials, compared to the open circuit potential (OCP). To analyze the adsorption process, various complementary interface analytical techniques were employed, including PM-IRRAS (polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy), AFM (atomic force microscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and E-QCM (electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance) measurements. The polarization experiments were conducted within a potential range where charging of the electric double layer dominates, and Faradaic currents can be disregarded. The findings highlight the significant influence of the interfacial charge distribution on the adsorption of BSA and LYZ onto the alloy surface. Furthermore, electrochemical analysis of the protein layers formed under applied overpotentials demonstrated improved corrosion protection properties. These studies provide valuable insights into protein adsorption on titanium alloys under physiological conditions, characterized by varying potentials of the passive alloy.

AB - Abstract. Force-displacement measurements and macrosections are commonly used methods to validate numerical models of clinching processes. However, these ex-situ methods often lead to springback of elastic deformations and crack-closing after unloading. In contrast, the in-situ computed tomography (CT) can provide three-dimensional images of the clinching point under loading conditions. So far, the quantity of elastic springback that causes measuring deviations between in- and ex-situ measurements is not determined. In this paper, a method is described to quantitatively compare the results of in-situ CT, ex-situ CT and CT scans of cut specimens, which are prepared for macrosectioning, among each other. The method is applied to a single-lap shear test of two clinched aluminum sheets. Here, the test is conducted to specific process steps, then the specimen is CT scanned in-situ (during loading) and ex-situ (after unloading). Subsequently, the specimens are cut for macrosectioning and CT scanned. Finally, the outer contours and the interfaces of cross section images are determined by digital image analysis and the deviations over the clinching point between ex- and in-situ methods are calculated.

AB - Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic surface of infinite volume it is a
classical result of Patterson that the positive Laplace-Beltrami operator has
no $L^2$-eigenvalues $\geq 1/4$. In this article we prove a generalization of
this result for the joint $L^2$-eigenvalues of the algebra of commuting
differential operators on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces $\Gamma\backslash
G/K$ of higher rank. We derive dynamical assumptions on the $\Gamma$-action on
the geodesic and the Satake compactifications which imply the absence of the
corresponding principal eigenvalues. A large class of examples fulfilling these
assumptions are the non-compact quotients by Anosov subgroups.

AB - Polymer composites represent the industry standard in injection molding for the production of plastic components with increased requirements in terms of heat resistance and stiffness. In the field of laser sintering (LS), these materials are less common so far. In order to extend the available material variety for the LS process, new ceramic-filled Polyamide 613 powders are investigated within the scope of this work. Here, the resulting properties from two different powder production methods are compared. One filled powder is produced by dry blending and the other powder with the same filler and filling ratio is produced by encapsulating the filler particles inside the polymer particles within the dissolution-precipitation process. It was found that encapsulating the filler particles can provide certain benefits for the processability, for example an improved powder flowability or better filler dispersion. However, encapsulating the filler also alters the thermal properties of the precipitated powder.

AB - Cooperative Driving requires ultra-reliable communications, and it is now clear that no single technology will ever be able to satisfy such stringent requirements, if only because active jamming can kill (almost) any wireless technology. Cooperative driving with multiple communication technologies which complement each other opens new spaces for research and development, but also poses several challenges. The work we present tackles the fallback and recovery mechanisms that the longitudinal controlling system of a platoon of vehicles can implement as a distributed system with multiple communication interfaces. We present a protocol and procedure to correctly compute the safe transition between different controlling algorithms, down to autonomous (or manual) driving when no communication is possible. To empower the study, we also develop a new version of PLEXE, which is an integral part of this contribution as the only Open Source, free simulation tool that enables the study of such systems with a modular approach, and that we deem offers the community the possibility of boosting research in this field. The results we present demonstrate the feasibility of safe fallback, but also highlight that such complex systems require careful design choices, as naïve approaches can lead to instabilities or even collisions, and that such design can only be done with appropriate in-silico experiments.

AB - Platooning is a promising application in the field of vehicular networks. It has the potential to improve traffic flow, but also road safety. However, unreliable communication has strong negative effects on platoon stability and, thus, safety on roads. To improve reliability, in this work, we propose using multi-hop communication for platooning using the Decode and Forward (DF) Full-Duplex Relaying (FDR) scheme together with beamforming. We use computer simulations to demonstrate that FDR latency has no observable negative effect on string stability or safety even while performing an emergency brake. We further show that this combined approach reaches a constant Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) of 100 % even in situations with high interference and/or congestion, where traditional approaches fail.

AB - We study the suitability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as purely opportunistic airborne virtual network infrastructure to support urban wireless networks, specifically in two Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) use cases: First, UAVs being used as relays for cooperative awareness applications; second, UAVs being used to coordinate channel access for platooning in urban areas. We do not require that these UAVs alter trajectory nor speed from those of their random, unrelated primary missions, so that these additional tasks can be executed with close-to-zero impact on the execution of their primary missions. Based on extensive computer simulations we show that, within a wide band of acceptable speeds, flight routes (up to a standard deviation of 300 m from the optimum) as well as altitudes, opportunistic relaying of transmissions via UAVs can yield a benefit to system performance that is on the same order of magnitude as that of optimally deployed UAVs. We further show that an opportunistic channel access control can reduce the total number of packet collisions by approx. 86 % compared to a scenario without any UAVs. Moreover, much of the reduction in impact due to suboptimal missions can be recovered simply by moderately increasing the number of UAVs.

AB - Many exciting future research topics in the field of Cooperative Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) require the simulation of both connectivity and automation components. However, existing simulation tools focus on only one of these two aspects while making idealistic assumptions about the other. In this work, we motivate the use of established libraries such as gRPC to couple existing independent simulation tools tailored to either connectivity or automation, and demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach. We also describe an Open Source reference implementation coupling CARLA and Veins.

AB - As technology advances, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles ( UAVs) have emerged as an innovative solution to a variety of problems in many fields. Automated control of UAVs is most common in large area operations, but they may also increase the versatility of smart home compositions by acting as a physical helper. For example, a voice- controlled UAV could act as an intelligent aerial assistant that can be seamlessly integrated into smart home systems. In this paper, we present a novel Augmented Reality (AR )-based UAV control that provides high-level control over a UAV by automating common UAV missions. In our work, we enable users to operate a small UAV hands-free using only a small set of voice commands. To help users identify the targets, and to understand the UAV ’s intentions, targets within the user’s field of vision are highlighted in an AR interface. We evaluate our approach in a user study (n=26) regarding usability, physical and mental demand, as well as a focus on the users’ preferences. Our study showed that the use of the proposed control was not only accepted, but some users stated that they would use such a system at home to help with some tasks at home

AB - High-quality teacher education is the basis for high competences of future teachers. To prepare them adequately for the demands of their future teaching profession, it is essential to know (i) which subject-specific competences and skills they need and (ii) how these can be acquired in teacher education. However, empirical findings on necessary competences as well as on the design of teacher training courses are scarcely available on the subject of technology, since mainly general, normative recommendations on potential study contents exist. To fill this gap, this work focuses on the investigation of necessary practical competences of prospective technology teachers. The acquisition of such practical competences and skills is of great importance for the school subject of technology when, for example, machines are operated, tools are used, or objects are designed and manufactured. However, there is a lack of a differentiated description of the practical requirements for technology teachers and the teaching-learning processes required for this in the teacher training. The aim of this work is therefore the theory- and empirically-guided development and evaluation of a practical demand-oriented course for the technology teacher training programme at RWTH Aachen University to promote subject-specific practical competences. The development was structured as an iterative process by the Model of Educational Reconstruction (MER), according to which three major aspects were investigated and connected. (1) In a first step, the competences to be acquired were described and structured, taking normative perspectives into account as well as an empirical needs assessment among teachers and teacher educators to clarify and analyse the science subject matter. (2) In a second step, the student teacher´s perspective was surveyed to adapt the course to their initial competences, skills and experiences. (3) In a third step, the content and the didactic structure of the practical course was developed iteratively, considering the findings of the preceding steps and various requirements for the design and the tasks of the practical course (e.g., a necessary differentiation or a self-directed examination of the practical tasks in the course). The practical course was taught in several runs and evaluated with respect to the perceived learning outcomes of the student teachers as well as to the quality of the course. The evaluation was carried out through self-assessment of the students in a questionnaire and a written portfolio. The findings of the evaluation indicate a positive perception regarding the quality of the course. The students positively assessed the course structure (e.g., sequence of the course contents) and individual course elements (e.g., concrete course tasks). Furthermore, an increase in practical competences and skills – regardless of initial experience – was found. The work provides groundwork for further studies, for example on the level of competence acquisition or the long-term effect of the practical course.

AB - In this article we prove meromorphic continuation of weighted zeta functions in the framework of open hyperbolic systems by using the meromorphically continued restricted resolvent of Dyatlov and Guillarmou (2016). We obtain a residue formula proving equality between residues of weighted zetas and invariant Ruelle distributions. We combine this equality with results of Guillarmou, Hilgert and Weich (2021) in order to relate the residues to Patterson-Sullivan distributions. Finally we provide proof-of-principle results concerning the numerical calculation of invariant Ruelle distributions for 3-disc scattering systems.

AB - We present a numerical algorithm for the computation of invariant Ruelle
distributions on convex co-compact hyperbolic surfaces. This is achieved by
exploiting the connection between invariant Ruelle distributions and residues
of meromorphically continued weighted zeta functions established by the authors
together with Barkhofen (2021). To make this applicable for numerics we express
the weighted zeta as the logarithmic derivative of a suitable parameter
dependent Fredholm determinant similar to Borthwick (2014). As an additional
difficulty our transfer operator has to include a contracting direction which
we account for with techniques developed by Rugh (1992). We achieve a further
improvement in convergence speed for our algorithm in the case of surfaces with
additional symmetries by proving and applying a symmetry reduction of weighted
zeta functions.
