We demonstrate a concept for high-bandwidth signal detection with low-speed photodetectors and electronics. The method is based on the parallel optical sampling of a high-bandwidth signal with sinc-pulse sequences provided by a Mach-Zehnder modulator. For the electronic detection and processing this parallel sampling enables to divide the high-bandwidth optical signal with the bandwidth B into N electrical signals with the baseband bandwidth of B/(2N) . In proof-of-concept experiments with N=3 , we present the detection of 24 GHz optical signals by detectors with a bandwidth of only 4 GHz. For ideal components, the sampling and bandwidth down-conversion does not add an excess error to the signals and even for the non-ideal components of our proof-of-concept setup, it is below 1%. Thus, the rms error for the measurement of the 24 GHz signal was reduced by a factor of about 3.4 and the effective number of bits were increased by 1.8. author: - first_name: Janosch full_name: Meier, Janosch last_name: Meier - first_name: Karanveer full_name: Singh, Karanveer last_name: Singh - first_name: Arijit full_name: Misra, Arijit last_name: Misra - first_name: Stefan full_name: Preussler, Stefan last_name: Preussler - first_name: Christoph full_name: Scheytt, Christoph id: '37144' last_name: Scheytt - first_name: Thomas full_name: Schneider, Thomas last_name: Schneider citation: ama: Meier J, Singh K, Misra A, Preussler S, Scheytt C, Schneider T. A balanced optical microwave phase detector (BOMPD) is implemented using a balanced Mach-Zehnder modulator and is employed to discriminate the phase difference between the envelope of the optical pulses and the microwave oscillator. It is shown mathematically that the inherent nonlinear properties of BOMPD with respect to the microwave excitation amplitude can be used for interharmonic locking. The characteristic functions of the phase detector for interharmonic locking are derived analytically and are compared with the measurement results. An opto-electronic phase-locked loop (OEPLL) is demonstrated whose output frequency locks on interharmonics of the MLL repetition rate when an appropriate modulator bias and sufficient RF amplitude are applied. Thus, for the first time theory and experiment of reliable locking on interharmonics of the repetition rate of a MLL are presented. author: - first_name: Meysam full_name: Bahmanian, Meysam id: '69233' last_name: Bahmanian - first_name: Christian full_name: Kress, Christian id: '13256' last_name: Kress - first_name: Christoph full_name: Scheytt, Christoph id: '37144' last_name: Scheytt citation: ama: Bahmanian M, Kress C, Scheytt C. The working principle meanwhile gives rise to the crucial problem and challenge to protect the metasurface from dust or clean the unavoidable contaminants during daily usage. Here, taking advantage of the intelligent bioinspired surfaces which exhibit self-cleaning properties, a versatile dielectric metasurface benefiting from the obtained superhydrophilic or quasi-superhydrophobic states is shown. The design is realized by embedding the metasurface inside a large area of wettability supporting structures, which is highly efficient in fabrication, and achieves both optical and wettability functionality at the same time. The superhydrophilic state enables an enhanced optical response with water, while the quasi-superhydrophobic state imparts the fragile antennas an ability to self-clean dust contamination. Furthermore, the metasurface can be easily switched and repeated between these two wettability or functional states by appropriate treatments in a repeatable way, without degrading the optical performance. The proposed design strategy will bring new opportunities to smart metasurfaces with improved optical performance, versatility, and physical stability. article_number: '2101781' article_type: original author: - first_name: Jinlong full_name: Lu, Jinlong last_name: Lu - first_name: Basudeb full_name: Sain, Basudeb last_name: Sain - first_name: Philip full_name: Georgi, Philip last_name: Georgi - first_name: Maximilian full_name: Protte, Maximilian last_name: Protte - first_name: Tim full_name: Bartley, Tim id: '49683' last_name: Bartley - first_name: Thomas full_name: Zentgraf, Thomas id: '30525' last_name: Zentgraf orcid: 0000-0002-8662-1101 citation: ama: Lu J, Sain B, Georgi P, Protte M, Bartley T, Zentgraf T. Here, we investigate the salting-out of different DNA origami shapes by the kosmotropic salt ammonium sulfate that is routinely employed in protein precipitation. We find that centrifugation in the presence of 3 M ammonium sulfate results in notable precipitation of DNA origami nanostructures but not of double-stranded genomic DNA. The precipitated DNA origami nanostructures can be resuspended in ammonium sulfate-free buffer without apparent formation of aggregates or loss of structural integrity. Even though quasi-1D six-helix bundle DNA origami are slightly less susceptible toward salting-out than more compact DNA origami triangles and 24-helix bundles, precipitation and recovery yields appear to be mostly independent of DNA origami shape and superstructure. Exploiting the specificity of ammonium sulfate salting-out for DNA origami nanostructures, we further apply this method to separate DNA origami triangles from genomic DNA fragments in a complex mixture. Our results thus demonstrate the possibility of concentrating and purifying DNA origami nanostructures by ammonium sulfate-induced salting-out. author: - first_name: Marcel full_name: Hanke, Marcel last_name: Hanke - first_name: Niklas full_name: Hansen, Niklas last_name: Hansen - first_name: Ruiping full_name: Chen, Ruiping last_name: Chen - first_name: Guido full_name: Grundmeier, Guido last_name: Grundmeier - first_name: Karim full_name: Fahmy, Karim last_name: Fahmy - first_name: Adrian full_name: Keller, Adrian last_name: Keller citation: ama: Hanke M, Hansen N, Chen R, Grundmeier G, Fahmy K, Keller A. But due to the lack of open and compatible simulators, authors typically create their own simulation environments for training and evaluation. This is cumbersome and time-consuming for authors and limits reproducibility and comparability, ultimately impeding progress in the field.\r\n\r\nTo this end, we propose mobile-env, a simple and open platform for training, evaluating, and comparing reinforcement learning and conventional approaches for continuous control in mobile wireless networks. mobile-env is lightweight and implements the common OpenAI Gym interface and additional wrappers, which allows connecting virtually any single-agent or multi-agent reinforcement learning framework to the environment. While mobile-env provides sensible default values and can be used out of the box, it also has many configuration options and is easy to extend. We therefore believe mobile-env to be a valuable platform for driving meaningful progress in autonomous coordination of\r\nwireless mobile networks." author: - first_name: Stefan Balthasar full_name: Schneider, Stefan Balthasar id: '35343' last_name: Schneider orcid: 0000-0001-8210-4011 - first_name: Stefan full_name: Werner, Stefan last_name: Werner - first_name: Ramin full_name: Khalili, Ramin last_name: Khalili - first_name: Artur full_name: Hecker, Artur last_name: Hecker - first_name: Holger full_name: Karl, Holger id: '126' last_name: Karl citation: ama: 'Schneider SB, Werner S, Khalili R, Hecker A, Karl H. mobile-env: An Open Platform for Reinforcement Learning in Wireless Mobile Networks. Working life reveals challenges through technological, economic and societal development that can only rudimentarily be addressed by formal education and training. Workplace learning becomes more and more important for employees and enterprises to successfully cope with these challenges.\r\nWorkplace learning is a steadily growing field of educational research but it lacks so far a scholastic canon – there is rather a diversity of research approaches. This volume reflects this diversity by bringing together researchers from different countries and different theoretical backgrounds, presenting their current research on topics that all are relevant for understanding presages, processes and outcomes of workplace learning. Hence, this volume is of relevance for researchers as well as practitioners in the field and policy makers." alternative_title: - Insights from a Growing Field citation: ama: Harteis C, Gijbels D, Kyndt E, eds. The task\r\nin multiobjective optimization and multiobjective optimal control is therefore\r\nto compute the set of optimal compromises (the Pareto set) between the\r\nconflicting objectives. Since the Pareto set generally consists of an infinite\r\nnumber of solutions, the computational effort can quickly become challenging\r\nwhich is particularly problematic when the objectives are costly to evaluate as\r\nis the case for models governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). To\r\ndecrease the numerical effort to an affordable amount, surrogate models can be\r\nused to replace the expensive PDE evaluations. Existing multiobjective\r\noptimization methods using model reduction are limited either to low parameter\r\ndimensions or to few (ideally two) objectives. This disruptive change in the automotive industry poses major challenges for manufacturers as well as suppliers as entirely new design and testing strategies have to be developed to remain competitive. Most importantly, the complexity of autonomously driving vehicles in a complex, uncertain, and safety-critical environment requires new testing procedures to cover the almost infinite range of potential scenarios. author: - first_name: Sebastian full_name: Peitz, Sebastian id: '47427' last_name: Peitz orcid: 0000-0002-3389-793X - first_name: Michael full_name: Dellnitz, Michael last_name: Dellnitz - first_name: Sebastian full_name: Bannenberg, Sebastian last_name: Bannenberg citation: ama: 'Peitz S, Dellnitz M, Bannenberg S. Agency is understood as a multifaceted construct describing the idea that human beings make choices, act on these choices, and thereby exercise influence on their own lives as well as their environment. We argue that the concept is discussed from three different perspectives in the literature—transformational, dispositional, and relational—that are each related to learning and development in work contexts. These perspectives do not reflect incompatible positions but rather different aspects of the same phenomena. The chapter also offers an avenue of insight into empirical studies that employ agency as a central concept as well as discussions about concepts that closely overlap with ideas of human beings as agents of power and influence. author: - first_name: Michael full_name: Goller, Michael id: '30984' last_name: Goller orcid: 0000-0002-2820-9178 - first_name: Susanna full_name: Paloniemi, Susanna last_name: Paloniemi citation: ama: 'Goller M, Paloniemi S. By breaking certain spatial symmetries, chiral structures arise and provide robust chiroptical responses to these plasmonic resonances. Here, we observe strong chiroptical responses in the linear and nonlinear optical regime for chiral L-handed helicoid-III nanoparticles and quantify them by means of an asymmetric factor, the so-called g-factor. We calculate the linear optical g-factors for two distinct chiroptical resonances to −0.12 and –0.43 and the nonlinear optical g-factors to −1.45 and −1.63. The results demonstrate that the chirality of the helicoid-III nanoparticles is strongly enhanced in the nonlinear regime. article_type: original author: - first_name: Florian full_name: Spreyer, Florian last_name: Spreyer - first_name: Jungho full_name: Mun, Jungho last_name: Mun - first_name: Hyeohn full_name: Kim, Hyeohn last_name: Kim - first_name: Ryeong Myeong full_name: Kim, Ryeong Myeong last_name: Kim - first_name: Ki Tae full_name: Nam, Ki Tae last_name: Nam - first_name: Junsuk full_name: Rho, Junsuk last_name: Rho - first_name: Thomas full_name: Zentgraf, Thomas id: '30525' last_name: Zentgraf orcid: 0000-0002-8662-1101 citation: ama: Spreyer F, Mun J, Kim H, et al. Several different approaches to realize solid-state quantum emitters with high performance have been pursued and different concepts for energy tuning have been established. However, the properties of the emitted photons are always defined by the individual quantum emitter and can therefore not be controlled with full flexibility. Here we introduce an all-optical nonlinear method to tailor and control the single photon emission. We demonstrate a laser-controlled down-conversion process from an excited state of a semiconductor quantum three-level system. Based on this concept, we realize energy tuning and polarization control of the single photon emission with a control-laser field. Our results mark an important step towards tailored single photon emission from a photonic quantum system based on quantum optical principles. article_number: '1387' author: - first_name: B. full_name: Jonas, B. last_name: Jonas - first_name: D. full_name: Heinze, D. last_name: Heinze - first_name: E. full_name: Schöll, E. last_name: Schöll - first_name: P. full_name: Kallert, P. last_name: Kallert - first_name: T. full_name: Langer, T. last_name: Langer - first_name: S. full_name: Krehs, S. last_name: Krehs - first_name: A. full_name: Widhalm, A. last_name: Widhalm - first_name: K. Our 2.5-D hybrid-analytical coupled mode model combines the vectorial fields associated with the fundamental TE- and TM-modes of a standard silicon photonics slab waveguide, propagating at oblique angles with respect to the rod axis, and the hybrid modes supported by the rod. One observes an efficient resonant interaction in cases where the common axial wavenumber of the waves in the slab matches the propagation constant of one or more modes of the rod. For certain modes of high angular order, the incident wave is able to transfer its directionality to the field in the fiber, exciting effectively only one of a pair of degenerate OAM modes author: - first_name: Manfred full_name: Hammer, Manfred id: '48077' last_name: Hammer orcid: 0000-0002-6331-9348 - first_name: Lena full_name: Ebers, Lena id: '40428' last_name: Ebers - first_name: Jens full_name: Förstner, Jens id: '158' last_name: Förstner orcid: 0000-0001-7059-9862 citation: ama: 'Hammer M, Ebers L, Förstner J. Im ersten Teil werden 2-D Si/SiO2-Wellenleiterkonfigurationen mit hohem Brechungsindexkontrast betrachtet. - lang: eng text: In this work, the electromagnetic wave propagation in integrated optical waveguides is studied by using semi-analytical and numerical simulation methods. In the first part, 2-D high-index contrast Si/SiO2 dielectric slab waveguide configurations are investigated. The structures are excited with semi-guided waves at oblique angles of propagation. Due to this, power transfer to specific outgoing modes can be suppressed, resulting in completely lossless configurations. The excitation is further examined for incoming, laterally confined wave bundles of semi-guided waves to realize practically more relevant 3-D configurations. Additionally, a stepwise angular spectrum method in combination with full vectorial 2-D finite element solutions for subproblems of lower complexity to numerically simulate the wave propagation in full 3-D planar lens-like waveguides is presented. In the second part, the wave propagation in lithium niobate waveguide structures is examined, which are used for quantum optical effects. On the one hand, superconducting nanowires on titanium in-diffused lithium niobate waveguides with an additional tapered silicon layer are used for single photon detection. The wave propagation in these 3-D multiscale tapers is studied by introducing a unidirectional finite element modal matching method. On the other hand, lithium niobate rib waveguides on silicon dioxide platforms are analyzed, focusing on the nonlinear parametric down-conversion process used for the generation of entangled photons. author: - first_name: Lena full_name: Ebers, Lena id: '40428' last_name: Ebers citation: ama: Ebers L. The\r\naction is to choose a set of arms, whereupon feedback for each arm in the\r\nchosen set is received. Unlike existing works, we study this problem in a\r\nnon-stochastic setting with subset-dependent feedback, i.e., the semi-bandit\r\nfeedback received could be generated by an oblivious adversary and also might\r\ndepend on the chosen set of arms. In addition, we consider a general feedback\r\nscenario covering both the numerical-based as well as preference-based case and\r\nintroduce a sound theoretical framework for this setting guaranteeing sensible\r\nnotions of optimal arms, which a learner seeks to find. We suggest a generic\r\nalgorithm suitable to cover the full spectrum of conceivable arm elimination\r\nstrategies from aggressive to conservative. Theoretical questions about the\r\nsufficient and necessary budget of the algorithm to find the best arm are\r\nanswered and complemented by deriving lower bounds for any learning algorithm\r\nfor this problem scenario." author: - first_name: Jasmin full_name: Brandt, Jasmin last_name: Brandt - first_name: Björn full_name: Haddenhorst, Björn last_name: Haddenhorst - first_name: Viktor full_name: Bengs, Viktor last_name: Bengs - first_name: Eyke full_name: Hüllermeier, Eyke last_name: Hüllermeier citation: ama: Brandt J, Haddenhorst B, Bengs V, Hüllermeier E. According to Pontryagin’s maximum principle, optimal solutions are concatenations of singular and bang arcs and exhibit the chattering or Fuller phenomenon, which is problematic for applications. To avoid chattering, we introduce a reduced model which is still biologically relevant and retains the important structural features of the original problem. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we show that the singular arc is dominant in the studied DOCPs and exhibits the turnpike property. This property is further used in order to design simple and realistic suboptimal control strategies. author: - first_name: Jean-Baptiste full_name: Caillau, Jean-Baptiste last_name: Caillau - first_name: Walid full_name: Djema, Walid last_name: Djema - first_name: Jean-Luc full_name: Gouzé, Jean-Luc last_name: Gouzé - first_name: Sofya full_name: Maslovskaya, Sofya id: '87909' last_name: Maslovskaya - first_name: Jean-Baptiste full_name: Pomet, Jean-Baptiste last_name: Pomet citation: ama: Caillau J-B, Djema W, Gouzé J-L, Maslovskaya S, Pomet J-B. This is especially true for adolescent immigrants who have not yet been able to finish education or gain qualifications relevant to joining the labour market. That is why many receiving countries have developed and implemented special programmes that aim at supporting immigrants' integration by facilitating their employability. Unfortunately, not much is known about the process of implementing these programmes or about how education systems, schools, and teachers are dealing with the new situation and target group. In this contribution, the implementation, development, and challenges of German Vocational Integration Classes (VIC), as an example of comparable programmes in the EU, are investigated to address this research gap. The paper considers the following exploratory research questions: (a) What challenges have been experienced by teachers and social workers in the implementation of VIC as well as in the integration of immigrants into the labour market in recent years? (b) How can these challenges be met in the long run and how should VIC be developed to better achieve its aims? \r\n\r\nMethods: To answer these questions, a sequential qualitative study containing questionnaire and interview elements was conducted. First, teachers and social workers involved in VIC filled in a questionnaire about their experiences and experienced challenges in implementing VIC (N = 46). Then, supplementing interviews were conducted with participants from the first sample in order to generate further insights and to contextualise the findings from the first study part (N = 14). \r\n\r\nFindings: From the respondents' answers, it appears that the VIC programme is well implemented. The results show, however, that central challenges continue to exist. This concerns, for example, legal regulations or the development of adequate curricula, but also the scope and quality of language education. In addition, problems have also been identified with regard to students' culture-specific education and their individual attitudes. These prevailing problems seem to affect schooling and educational processes. In addition, respondents report feeling left alone to deal with problems and that their experiences from their daily work in VIC and with immigrants are not sufficiently taken into account in policy and school-related decisions. \r\n\r\nConclusions: Although VIC seems well implemented, key challenges remain in the view of the participants. It was found that teachers cannot solve many of the identified problems themselves, as they require action at the level of policy or school organisation. For staff, this can be accompanied by increased stress and demotivation. For the young immigrants, the existing challenges can have a long-term impact on school success and transition to vocational education and training. The study thus highlights the importance of targeted and holistic strategies to support immigrant integration through education. Material properties of electrodes and electrolytes along with cell parameters such as stack pressure and temperature have coupled, synergistic, and sometimes deleterious effects on fast-charging performance. We develop a new experimental testbed that allows precise and conformal application of electrode stack pressure. We focus on cell capacity degradation using single-layer pouch cells with graphite anodes, LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 (NMC532) cathodes, and carbonate-based electrolyte. In the tested range (10 – 125 psi), cells cycled at higher pressure show higher capacity and less capacity fading. Additionally, Li plating decreases with increasing pressure as observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical imaging. While the loss of Li inventory from Li plating is the largest contributor to capacity fade, electrochemical and SEM examination of the NMC cathodes after XFC experiments show increased secondary particle damage at lower pressure. We infer that the better performance at higher pressure is due to more homogenous reactions of active materials across the electrode and less polarization through the electrode thickness. Our study emphasizes the importance of electrode stack pressure in XFC batteries and highlights its subtle role in cell conditions." author: - first_name: Chuntian full_name: Cao, Chuntian last_name: Cao - first_name: Hans-Georg full_name: Steinrück, Hans-Georg id: '84268' last_name: Steinrück orcid: 0000-0001-6373-0877 - first_name: Partha P full_name: Paul, Partha P last_name: Paul - first_name: Alison R. full_name: Dunlop, Alison R. last_name: Dunlop - first_name: Stephen E. full_name: Trask, Stephen E. last_name: Trask - first_name: Andrew full_name: Jansen, Andrew last_name: Jansen - first_name: Robert M full_name: Kasse, Robert M last_name: Kasse - first_name: Vivek full_name: Thampy, Vivek last_name: Thampy - first_name: Maha full_name: Yusuf, Maha last_name: Yusuf - first_name: Johanna full_name: Nelson Weker, Johanna last_name: Nelson Weker - first_name: Badri full_name: Shyam, Badri last_name: Shyam - first_name: Ram full_name: Subbaraman, Ram last_name: Subbaraman - first_name: Kelly full_name: Davis, Kelly last_name: Davis - first_name: Christina M full_name: Johnston, Christina M last_name: Johnston - first_name: Christopher J full_name: Takacs, Christopher J last_name: Takacs - first_name: Michael full_name: Toney, Michael last_name: Toney citation: ama: Cao C, Steinrück H-G, Paul PP, et al. In combination with additive manufacturing, which facilitates great flexibility of the implant design, it is possible to selectively adjust the microstructure of the material in the process, thereby control the corrosion and fatigue behavior. In the present study, conventional hot-rolled (HR) pure iron is compared to pure iron manufactured by electron beam melting (EBM). The microstructure, the corrosion behavior and the fatigue properties were studied comprehensively. The investigated sample conditions showed significant differences in the microstructures that led to changes in corrosion and fatigue properties. The EBM iron showed significantly lower fatigue strength compared to the HR iron. These different fatigue responses were observed under purely mechanical loading as well as with superimposed corrosion influence and are summarized in a model that describes the underlying failure mechanisms. article_number: '18' author: - first_name: Steffen full_name: Wackenrohr, Steffen last_name: Wackenrohr - first_name: Christof Johannes Jaime full_name: Torrent, Christof Johannes Jaime last_name: Torrent - first_name: Sebastian full_name: Herbst, Sebastian last_name: Herbst - first_name: Florian full_name: Nürnberger, Florian last_name: Nürnberger - first_name: Philipp full_name: Krooss, Philipp last_name: Krooss - first_name: Christoph full_name: Ebbert, Christoph last_name: Ebbert - first_name: Markus full_name: Voigt, Markus id: '15182' last_name: Voigt - first_name: Guido full_name: Grundmeier, Guido id: '194' last_name: Grundmeier - first_name: Thomas full_name: Niendorf, Thomas last_name: Niendorf - first_name: Hans Jürgen full_name: Maier, Hans Jürgen last_name: Maier citation: ama: Wackenrohr S, Torrent CJJ, Herbst S, et al.
