Generally speaking, AutoML approaches comprise two major components: a search space model and an optimizer for traversing the space. Recent approaches have shown impressive results in the realm of supervised learning, most notably (single-label) classification (SLC). Moreover, first attempts at extending these approaches towards multi-label classification (MLC) have been made. While the space of candidate pipelines is already huge in SLC, the complexity of the search space is raised to an even higher power in MLC. One may wonder, therefore, whether and to what extent optimizers established for SLC can scale to this increased complexity, and how they compare to each other. This paper makes the following contributions: First, we survey existing approaches to AutoML for MLC. Second, we augment these approaches with optimizers not previously tried for MLC. Third, we propose a benchmarking framework that supports a fair and systematic comparison. Fourth, we conduct an extensive experimental study, evaluating the methods on a suite of MLC problems. We find a grammar-based best-first search to compare favorably to other optimizers.' author: - first_name: Marcel Dominik full_name: Wever, Marcel Dominik id: '33176' last_name: Wever orcid: ' https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9782-6818' - first_name: Alexander full_name: Tornede, Alexander id: '38209' last_name: Tornede - first_name: Felix full_name: Mohr, Felix last_name: Mohr - first_name: Eyke full_name: Hüllermeier, Eyke id: '48129' last_name: Hüllermeier citation: ama: 'Wever MD, Tornede A, Mohr F, Hüllermeier E. These models represent diverse resource requirements of application in a datacenter network, which can be represented by the coflow abstraction. The conventional method of creating hand-crafted coflow heuristics for admission or scheduling for different workloads is practically infeasible. In this paper, we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based coflow admission scheme -- LCS -- that can learn an admission policy for a higher-level performance objective, i.e., maximize successful coflow admissions, without manual feature engineering. LCS is trained on a production trace, which has online coflow arrivals. The evaluation results show that LCS is able to learn a reasonable admission policy that admits more coflows than state-of-the-art Varys heuristic while meeting their deadlines. author: - first_name: Asif full_name: Hasnain, Asif id: '63288' last_name: Hasnain - first_name: Holger full_name: Karl, Holger id: '126' last_name: Karl citation: ama: 'Hasnain A, Karl H. Meanwhile it has entered the consumer market with digital home assistants with a spoken language interface being its most prominent application. Speech recorded at a distance is affected by various acoustic distortions and, consequently, quite different processing pipelines have emerged compared to ASR for close-talk speech. A signal enhancement front-end for dereverberation, source separation and acoustic beamforming is employed to clean up the speech, and the back-end ASR engine is robustified by multi-condition training and adaptation. We will also describe the so-called end-to-end approach to ASR, which is a new promising architecture that has recently been extended to the far-field scenario. This tutorial article gives an account of the algorithms used to enable accurate speech recognition from a distance, and it will be seen that, although deep learning has a significant share in the technological breakthroughs, a clever combination with traditional signal processing can lead to surprisingly effective solutions. author: - first_name: Reinhold full_name: Haeb-Umbach, Reinhold id: '242' last_name: Haeb-Umbach - first_name: Jahn full_name: Heymann, Jahn last_name: Heymann - first_name: Lukas full_name: Drude, Lukas last_name: Drude - first_name: Shinji full_name: Watanabe, Shinji last_name: Watanabe - first_name: Marc full_name: Delcroix, Marc last_name: Delcroix - first_name: Tomohiro full_name: Nakatani, Tomohiro last_name: Nakatani citation: ama: Haeb-Umbach R, Heymann J, Drude L, Watanabe S, Delcroix M, Nakatani T. There are a multitude of options for excitation and detection of theses waves, such as optical and piezoelectric systems. While optical systems, with thermoelastic excitation and interferometric detection, have the benefit of being contactless, they usually require rather complex and expensive experimental setups. Piezoelectric systems are more easily realised but require direct contact with the specimen and usually have a limited bandwidth, especially in case of piezoelectric excitation. In this work, the authors compare the properties of piezoelectric and optical detection methods for broad-band acoustic signals. The shape (e. g. the displacement) of a propagating plate wave is given by its frequency and wave number, allowing to investigate correlations between mode shapes and received signal strengths. This is aided by evaluations in normalised frequency and wavenumber space, facilitating comparisons of different specimens. Further, the authors explore possibilities to utilise the specific properties of the detection methods to determine acoustic material parameters. alternative_title: - Untersuchung von Eigenheiten piezoelektrischer Detektionsmethoden für akustische Plattenwellen zur Materialcharakterisierung author: - first_name: Leander full_name: Claes, Leander id: '11829' last_name: Claes orcid: 0000-0002-4393-268X - first_name: Hanna full_name: Schmiegel, Hanna last_name: Schmiegel - first_name: Clemens full_name: Grünsteidl, Clemens last_name: Grünsteidl - first_name: Sarah full_name: Johannesmann, Sarah id: '29190' last_name: Johannesmann - first_name: Manuel full_name: Webersen, Manuel id: '11289' last_name: Webersen orcid: 0000-0001-6411-4232 - first_name: Bernd full_name: Henning, Bernd id: '213' last_name: Henning citation: ama: Claes L, Schmiegel H, Grünsteidl C, Johannesmann S, Webersen M, Henning B. One of the main and yet open challenges in AutoML is an effective use of computational resources: An AutoML process involves the evaluation of many candidate pipelines, which are costly but often ineffective because they are canceled due to a timeout.\r\nIn this paper, we present an approach to predict the runtime of two-step machine learning pipelines with up to one pre-processor, which can be used to anticipate whether or not a pipeline will time out. Separate runtime models are trained offline for each algorithm that may be used in a pipeline, and an overall prediction is derived from these models. We empirically show that the approach increases successful evaluations made by an AutoML tool while preserving or even improving on the previously best solutions." author: - first_name: Felix full_name: Mohr, Felix last_name: Mohr - first_name: Marcel Dominik full_name: Wever, Marcel Dominik id: '33176' last_name: Wever orcid: ' https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9782-6818' - first_name: Alexander full_name: Tornede, Alexander id: '38209' last_name: Tornede - first_name: Eyke full_name: Hüllermeier, Eyke id: '48129' last_name: Hüllermeier citation: ama: Mohr F, Wever MD, Tornede A, Hüllermeier E. Für verschiedene physikalische Eigenschaften, Betriebsbedingungen und Materialklassen werden daher geeignete messtechnische Verfahren zur Materialcharakterisierung benötigt. - lang: eng text: Precise knowledge of material properties is a great concern in the design of technical systems, and in the monitoring of such systems during operation. Therefore, metrological processes are required for materials characterisation with respect to specific physical properties, operational conditions and classes of materials. In the work presented herein, a measurement procedure for the ultrasonic characterization of mechanical properties of homogeneous and fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer materials is presented, considering the different degrees of anisotropy. For this, acoustic Lamb waves are excited in a plate-shaped specimen using high-energy laser pulses, and then recorded.Based on the dispersive characteristics of the detected waveguide modes, an inverse procedure is applied to identify the parameters of a linear-elastic material model. Further, a procedure for completely characterising the orthotropy of materials like fiber-reinforced composites using a two-dimensional simulation model is presented. The measurement procedure is verified by examining artificially aged homogeneous polymers and composites, also considering the applicability of results to the quasistatic case. Comparing to the results of corresponding mechanical tensile tests, preconditions and limitations of the procedure are discussed, specifically regarding the assumption of an ideal-elastic material model. author: - first_name: Manuel full_name: Webersen, Manuel id: '11289' last_name: Webersen orcid: 0000-0001-6411-4232 citation: ama: Webersen M. Increasing the surface area of the CN condensates in the presence of ZnCl2 salt melts enhances the amount of CO2 adsorbed while preserving the high selectivity values and C1N1 structure. Results indicate that these new materials show a sorption mechanism a step closer to that of natural CO2 caption proteins and based on metal free structural cryptopores. author: - first_name: Janina full_name: Kossmann, Janina last_name: Kossmann - first_name: Diana full_name: Piankova, Diana last_name: Piankova - first_name: Nadezda full_name: V. These platforms allow the use of specialized hardware to accelerate software applications, but require the software to be adapted in what can be a prolonged and complex process. The main goal of this work is to describe and evaluate mechanisms that can transparently transfer the control flow between CPU and FPGA within the scope of HPC. Combining such a mechanism with transparent software profiling and accelerator configuration could lead to an automatic way of accelerating regular applications. In this work, a mechanism based on the ptrace system call is proposed, and its performance on the Intel Xeon+FPGA platform is evaluated. The feasibility of the proposed approach is demonstrated by a working prototype that performs the transparent control flow transfer of any function call to a matching hardware accelerator. This approach is more general than shared library interposition at the cost of a small time overhead in each accelerator use (about 1.3ms in the prototype implementation). article_number: '406' author: - first_name: Daniel full_name: Granhão, Daniel last_name: Granhão - first_name: João Canas full_name: Canas Ferreira, João Canas last_name: Canas Ferreira citation: ama: Granhão D, Canas Ferreira JC. A multifunctional myoelectric prosthesis controlled using pattern classification can be used to restore some of the lost motor abilities. However, learning to control an advanced prosthesis can be a challenging task, but virtual and augmented reality (AR) provide means to create an engaging and motivating training. Methods In this study, we present a novel training framework that integrates virtual elements within a real scene (AR) while allowing the view from the first-person perspective. The framework was evaluated in 13 able-bodied subjects and a limb-deficient person divided into intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups. The IG received training by performing simulated clothespin task and both groups conducted a pre- and posttest with a real prosthesis. When training with the AR, the subjects received visual feedback on the generated grasping force. The main outcome measure was the number of pins that were successfully transferred within 20 min (task duration), while the number of dropped and broken pins were also registered. The participants were asked to score the difficulty of the real task (posttest), fun-factor and motivation, as well as the utility of the feedback. Results The performance (median/interquartile range) consistently increased during the training sessions (4/3 to 22/4). While the results were similar for the two groups in the pretest, the performance improved in the posttest only in IG. In addition, the subjects in IG transferred significantly more pins (28/10.5 versus 14.5/11), and dropped (1/2.5 versus 3.5/2) and broke (5/3.8 versus 14.5/9) significantly fewer pins in the posttest compared to CG. The participants in IG assigned (mean ± std) significantly lower scores to the difficulty compared to CG (5.2 ± 1.9 versus 7.1 ± 0.9), and they highly rated the fun factor (8.7 ± 1.3) and usefulness of feedback (8.5 ± 1.7). Conclusion The results demonstrated that the proposed AR system allows for the transfer of skills from the simulated to the real task while providing a positive user experience. The present study demonstrates the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed AR framework. Importantly, the developed system is open source and available for download and further development. author: - first_name: Alexander full_name: Boschmann, Alexander last_name: Boschmann - first_name: Dorothee full_name: Neuhaus, Dorothee last_name: Neuhaus - first_name: Sarah full_name: Vogt, Sarah last_name: Vogt - first_name: Christian full_name: Kaltschmidt, Christian last_name: Kaltschmidt - first_name: Marco full_name: Platzner, Marco last_name: Platzner - first_name: Strahinja full_name: Dosen, Strahinja last_name: Dosen citation: ama: Boschmann A, Neuhaus D, Vogt S, Kaltschmidt C, Platzner M, Dosen S. It is targeted at\r\nheterogeneous and expensive problems, i.e., problems that have at least one\r\nobjective function that is computationally expensive. The method is\r\nderivative-free in the sense that neither need derivative information be\r\navailable for the expensive objectives nor are gradients approximated using\r\nrepeated function evaluations as is the case in finite-difference methods.\r\nInstead, a multiobjective trust region approach is used that works similarly to\r\nits well-known scalar pendants. Local surrogate models constructed from\r\nevaluation data of the true objective functions are employed to compute\r\npossible descent directions. In contrast to existing multiobjective trust\r\nregion algorithms, these surrogates are not polynomial but carefully\r\nconstructed radial basis function networks. This has the important advantage\r\nthat the number of data points scales linearly with the parameter space\r\ndimension. The local models qualify as fully linear and the corresponding\r\ngeneral scalar framework is adapted for problems with multiple objectives.\r\nConvergence to Pareto critical points is proven and numerical examples\r\nillustrate our findings." article_number: '31' author: - first_name: Manuel Bastian full_name: Berkemeier, Manuel Bastian id: '51701' last_name: Berkemeier - first_name: Sebastian full_name: Peitz, Sebastian id: '47427' last_name: Peitz orcid: 0000-0002-3389-793X citation: ama: Berkemeier MB, Peitz S. The detection principle is based on a secondary electron conversion holder with an exchangeable aperture strip allowing its acceptance angle to be tuned from 3 to 98 mrad. The contrast mechanism and performance were investigated using freestanding nanometer-thin carbon membranes. The results demonstrate that the detector can be optimized either for most efficient signal collection or for maximum image contrast. The designed setup allows for the imaging of thin low-density materials that otherwise provide little signal or contrast and for a clear end-point detection in the fabrication of nanopores. In addition, the detector is able to determine the thickness of membranes with sub-nanometer precision by quantitatively evaluating the image signal and comparing the results with Monte Carlo simulations. The thickness determined by the dark-field transmission detector is compared to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy measurements. author: - first_name: Daniel full_name: Emmrich, Daniel last_name: Emmrich - first_name: Annalena full_name: Wolff, Annalena last_name: Wolff - first_name: Nikolaus full_name: Meyerbröker, Nikolaus last_name: Meyerbröker - first_name: Jörg full_name: Lindner, Jörg id: '20797' last_name: Lindner - first_name: André full_name: Beyer, André last_name: Beyer - first_name: Armin full_name: Gölzhäuser, Armin last_name: Gölzhäuser citation: ama: Emmrich D, Wolff A, Meyerbröker N, Lindner J, Beyer A, Gölzhäuser A. In contrast to other autonomous vehicle applications, WSNs have two metrics for performance evaluation. First, quality of information (QoI) which is used to measure the quality of sensed data (e.g., measurement uncertainties or signal strength). Second, quality of service (QoS) which is used to measure the network''s performance for data forwarding (e.g., delay and packet losses). As a use case, we consider wireless acoustic sensor networks, where a group of speakers move inside a room and there are autonomous vehicles installed with microphones for streaming the audio data. We formulate the problem as a Markov decision problem (MDP) and solve it using Deep-Q-Networks (DQN). Additionally, we compare the performance of DQN solution to two different real-world implementations: speakers holding/passing microphones and microphones being preinstalled in fixed positions. We show that the performance of autonomous vehicles in terms of QoI and QoS is better than the real-world implementation in some scenarios. Moreover, we study the impact of the vehicles speed on the learning process of the DQN solution and show how low speeds degrade the performance. Finally, we compare the DQN solution to a heuristic one and provide theoretical analysis of the performance with respect to dynamic WSNs.' author: - first_name: Haitham full_name: Afifi, Haitham id: '65718' last_name: Afifi - first_name: Arunselvan full_name: Ramaswamy, Arunselvan id: '66937' last_name: Ramaswamy orcid: https://orcid.org/ 0000-0001-7547-8111 - first_name: Holger full_name: Karl, Holger id: '126' last_name: Karl citation: ama: 'Afifi H, Ramaswamy A, Karl H. The former is used to specify the quality of the collected data by the sensors (e.g., measurements error or signal's intensity), while the latter defines the network's performance and availability (e.g., packet losses and latency). In this paper, we consider an example of wireless acoustic sensor networks, where we select a subset of microphones for two different objectives. First, we maximize the recording quality under QoS constraints. Second, we apply a trade-off between QoI and QoS. We formulate the problem as a constrained Markov Decision Problem (MDP) and solve it using reinforcement learning (RL). We compare the RL solution to a baseline model and show that in case of QoS-guarantee objective, the RL solution has an optimality gap up to 1\%. Meanwhile, the RL solution is better than the baseline with improvements up to 23\%, when using the trade-off objective. author: - first_name: Haitham full_name: Afifi, Haitham id: '65718' last_name: Afifi - first_name: Arunselvan full_name: Ramaswamy, Arunselvan id: '66937' last_name: Ramaswamy orcid: https://orcid.org/ 0000-0001-7547-8111 - first_name: Holger full_name: Karl, Holger id: '126' last_name: Karl citation: ama: 'Afifi H, Ramaswamy A, Karl H. Providing these services requires online coordination including scaling the service, placing instance of all components in the network, scheduling traffic to these instances, and routing traffic through the network. Optimized service coordination is still a hard problem due to many influencing factors such as rapidly arriving user demands and limited node and link capacity. Existing approaches to solve the problem are often built on rigid models and assumptions, tailored to specific scenarios. If the scenario changes and the assumptions no longer hold, they easily break and require manual adjustments by experts. Novel self-learning approaches using deep reinforcement learning (DRL) are promising but still have limitations as they only address simplified versions of the problem and are typically centralized and thus do not scale to practical large-scale networks.\r\n\r\nTo address these issues, we propose a distributed self-learning service coordination approach using DRL. After centralized training, we deploy a distributed DRL agent at each node in the network, making fast coordination decisions locally in parallel with the other nodes. Each agent only observes its direct neighbors and does not need global knowledge. Hence, our approach scales independently from the size of the network. In our extensive evaluation using real-world network topologies and traffic traces, we show that our proposed approach outperforms a state-of-the-art conventional heuristic as well as a centralized DRL approach (60% higher throughput on average) while requiring less time per online decision (1 ms)." author: - first_name: Stefan Balthasar full_name: Schneider, Stefan Balthasar id: '35343' last_name: Schneider orcid: 0000-0001-8210-4011 - first_name: Haydar full_name: Qarawlus, Haydar last_name: Qarawlus - first_name: Holger full_name: Karl, Holger id: '126' last_name: Karl citation: ama: 'Schneider SB, Qarawlus H, Karl H. Während für die Entwicklung neuer Geschäftsmodelle häufig Workshops und einfache Software-Tools zur Visualisierung genutzt werden, wurden in der Forschung bereits erste Ansätze von datengetriebener Geschäftsmodellentwicklung (GME) vorgestellt.
