The purpose of explanations given by a more knowledgeable person (the explainer) is to increase the understanding of a less knowledgeable person (the explainee). So far, little is known about what assumptions explainers have about explainees' knowledge and understanding at the beginning of an explanation, and how these assumptions develop over the course of the explanatory interaction. Similarly, the degree of achieved understanding by the explainees and the way explainers monitor explainees' changing levels of understanding moment-by-moment has not yet been fully investigated. Here, we report on three different applications of video-recall for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of understanding in three interdisciplinary research projects, that all investigate cognitive and behavioral phenomena in everyday explanations. In all three projects video-recall was used as a post-hoc procedure following the recording of dyadic face-to-face explanations of board games. The design of the video-recall procedure differed between individual projects as they pursued different research objectives, investigating either (1) explainees' multimodal signals of understanding, (2) explainers' assessment of explainees' developing domain knowledge with differentiation between objective and subjective knowledge aspects, and (3) the change in different forms of knowledge that explainers assume in explainees. By discussing the research benefits and the limitations of each procedure, this article provides critical reflections on video-recall as a versatile research method applied for the analysis of human multimodal behavior and cognitive processing. https://ris.uni-paderborn.de/record/61151 eng info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccess Lazarov ST, Schaffer M, Gladow V, Buschmeier H, Grimminger A, Buhl HM.
