abstract = {{Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) is an established standard for describing business processes and workflows. It can also be used to document research activities and processes in collaboration with researchers who have limited knowledge of process modelling. However, processes documented in BPMN cannot be directly transferred into a semantic representation (e.g., as triples).

Several approaches to developing a BPMN ontology exist, but they are no longer actively maintained. Metadata4Ing (M4I) is an actively maintained ontology for describing research processes, with a focus on engineering.

In this poster, we present our approach to mapping processes modelled in BPMN to Metadata4Ing and discuss potential challenges involved in implementing this mapping.

Our approach draws on foundational concepts from the literature on ontology matching and ontology evaluation and comprises four steps: “process model analysis”, “semantic mapping”, “conceptual derivation of the ontological structure”, and “assessment of transferability”. Transferability is assessed using the criteria of “mappability”, “granularity”, and “extensibility”.

We apply the approach to a concrete example from the enableATO project, which focuses on automated maintenance management in the railway sector. The overall process of the subproject was iteratively documented in BPMN through interviews with the six project team members. The process is then transferred to M4I using the mapping developed. This translates the BPMN process steps into a semantic notation and makes it possible to associate the resulting research data with those steps.}},
