How-\r\never, research into decision support methodologies and systems for coordinating\r\nvolunteers is scarce. Building on previous work in this area, we propose combin-\r\ning heuristic and exact procedures. Based on real-world data from a flood scenario\r\nin Halle (Saale, Germany) in 2018, we propose and computationally evaluate\r\ndifferent combinations. Our results show that using a combination of a heuristic\r\nand a MILP solver allows for the efficient computation of effective solutions for\r\nup to 500 volunteers. Our results also show that the most suitable mode depends\r\non the size of the problem in terms of the number of volunteers.","lang":"eng"}],"language":[{"iso":"eng"}],"_id":"67595","user_id":"53914","author":[{"full_name":"Goecke, Manuel","first_name":"Manuel","last_name":"Goecke"},{"full_name":"Gnade, Judith","last_name":"Gnade","first_name":"Judith"},{"last_name":"Schryen","first_name":"Guido","full_name":"Schryen, Guido","id":"72850"}],"status":"public","title":"Coordinating Spontaneous Volunteers in the Aftermath of Natural Disasters: Development and Computational Evaluation of Heuristic Methods","year":"2026","article_type":"original","date_updated":"2026-10-22T12:05:39Z","publication_status":"accepted"}
