Who am I in the age of AI? Exploring dimensions that shape occupational identity in the context of AI for decision-making

Organizations leverage artificial intelligence (AI) systems to augment or automate employee decision-making practices. These changes often transform employees’ occupation significantly and, thus, the way employees perceive themselves as professionals. By making use of qualitative insights from three case organizations that introduced AI systems for decision making, we explore how AI systems affect employees’ occupational identity. Our findings uncover three important dimensions that shape the way AI systems affect occupational identity. Based on our insights, we derive implications for the successful introduction of AI systems and highlight potential pitfalls that may arise from different organizational strategies used to introduce AI systems.
