Abstract
<jats:p>Hydrothermal carbonization of trehalose, in contrast to other saccharides, leads to the formation of microspheres with a bimodal size distribution. The microspheres develop hierarchical porosity with micro-, meso-, and macro-pores after pyrolysis.</jats:p>
