Abstract
Discusses the musical implications which Scribe's vaudeville texts imposed on their respective arrangers, for instance the specification of the timbre, but also the dramaturgical use of elements of theater music (dances, celebratory choruses, framing and accompanying instrumental music.) Scribe's vaudeville texts written between 1823 and 1828, for which the specific musical realizations (for example by Heudier and Pierre-Louis Hus-Desforges, the music directors of the Théâtre du Gymnase-Dramatique) survive in French archives, are examined. Scribe's traditional classification as opera author reveals many intergeneric reciprocal effects. The 'minor genre' of vaudeville did not consistently serve - as has previously been assumed by scholars - as an experimental realm for opera, more often the reverse was true: Scribe only used new musical-dramatic techniques of (for example, the 'piéce bien faite') for vaudeville when they had been tried out in opera.
